I know nothing about skin care

poppyzbrite4 · 01/04/2021 13:56

My previous skincare routine was rubbing my face with water in the shower and putting on something like Aveeda moisturiser when I got out, if I remembered.

I'm late 40s now and my skin is changing on my face. Dry forehead for some reason, dry skin in my eyebrows, baggy skin around the eyes. I also seem to be developing a couple of deep wrinkles between my eyebrows.

Is there anything I can buy that I can just slap on? I really don't want to spend hours exfoliating and doing other things to my skin. I also have blackheads on my nose, though the rest of my skin seems ok for now.

I have a bit of a crush and want to look presentable for my zoom swoons.

Basic am
Cleanse
Moisturise
SPF

Pm
Cleanse
Moisturise
Use BHA for the blackheads (are they blackheads or sebaceous filaments? Pics of both on google!) a couple of times a week and this should help with any flaky bits too

You could add a hydrating serum in too If your skin is dry in places like the Superdrug pure hydration

Thank you. I went to Dermalogica and uploaded a photo and they recommended a load of very expensive products. I'm currently looking at Dermalogica intense moisture balance for the dry skin and Dermalogica bye blackheads which is a kit. I do think they are blackheads rather than the other things. I'm also eyeing up some eye serum. I think I'll get the smaller products to see if they are any good and then invest if they are.

If you want to mix and match, paulas choice BHA is very good
Your good skin range at boots does great cleansers too, or Cerave hydrating cleanser
I would always rather spend money on moisturiser than a wash off cleanser!

Thank you I really appreciate your help. I think I asked another question a while ago and you answered then too. Thanks again, I'll look into those products.

Have a look for products that contain vitamin A and C. These are anti aging so will help with wrinkles/dark spots etc. Boots do an own brand range with these ingredients.

poppyzbrite4 · 01/04/2021 15:37

I will do, thanks. I think Boots often do deals as well, so I'll keep an eye out.

I think it's okay to build up to a more detailed skincare regime. If you want to keep it simple, that's totally doable.

In your case, I'd be looking for a v gentle facial wash to use in the shower and/or a micellar water ( I assume you don't wear much make up as otherwise just splashing your face wouldn't do it). Then you definitely need a decent moisturiser. There are a multitude of good quality, relatively low cost brands from Ceva, The Inkey List, Neutrogena, Boots, the Body Shop. If you've survived this long without a good moisturiser I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest you don't have very dry skin. I'd look at a vitamin C moisturiser from one of those brands.

Then see how you go. You might then want to introduce a treatment or a serum or whatever over time, but this is a good intro option.

BoozeBegone · 01/04/2021 15:44

Watching-is Nivea a decent moisturiser? It's all I've used for years!

I’m a skin therapist. The Dermalogica age smart range is actually really good. Skincare that works isn’t cheap. The other brand that is very good if you want to see visible results is Environ. But Environ is very prescriptive and you need to have a course of electrical facials alongside it.

Since you are new to skin care, I’d recommend getting a set of Dermalogica rapid reveal peels which will give you a deep exfoliation and get your cell renewal going and will make your skin more receptive to products. And you also need a good cleanser and a good night and day moisturiser as a minimum.

Please, whatever you do don’t

  • buy retinol off some random website and slap it on your skin.
  • or buy anything from a multi-level marketing company like ‘Nu Skin’ It will not be any good.

Another thing that you could do is book a facial with a reputable therapist - the right one can really make a difference. See if there is someone in your area who does Mesoestetic peels.

Almost forgot SPF30 is a must all year round. Even when it’s cold, UVA rays are present and do more damage than UVB rays. The sun is by far the most damaging factor in skin ageing.

This is marvellous, thank you. I have no idea what retinal does, so don't worry I won't be doing anything like that.

I'll go with the Dermalogica then and get those peels (sounds scary!). Will those do for the blackheads too? Maybe I should get the kit. I'll get the moisturiser that was recommended and look at the cleansers.

Thank you!

Thank you for this, will take a look at those brands. The dry skin is a new development, probably hormonal as otherwise my skin was fine.

I've only just started caring for my skin properly and have invested in the Olay Regenerist range which really works. I also do some face yoga / massage each day (only 10 - 15 mins) and I think the combination of both has really made a difference. I had visible lines on my forehead which have reduced and my overall skin texture and tone have really improved.
I know you said you don't want anything that takes time but I find the face massage is a real wellbeing / mood booster.

So in the morning I use -

  • Olay Regenerist face wash
  • Vit C serum
  • olay regenerist eye gel
  • olay regenerist moisturiser

Evening -

  • same face wash
  • olay regenerist face firming serum
  • hyaluronic boost from superdrug
  • same eye gel
  • olay regenerist night moisturiser

Dry skin is something which comes with ageing, unfortunately. I’ve found that my skin has become more dry and sensitised with age.

I'm glad this is working for you.

I bought some Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery with SPF50, which is a moisturiser, a couple of Rapid Reveal Peels and some Multivitamin Power Firm which is for around the eyes. I'll see how I get on but will be coming back to this thread for more ideas.

Thank you all, much appreciated. Here's to my new youthful glow. Smile

I use a hyaluronic acid containing serum am and pm, and hyaluronic acid containing night cream and day cream with sun protection.
I also use a gua sha, and prescription cream for rosacea.
I try to drink enough water and eat good foods like blueberries ( alongside crap food if I'm honest)

Geamhradh · 01/04/2021 20:06

Watch Nadine Baggott videos.
She's great, explains the science behind the ingredients and promotes products at all price ranges so doesn't send you forking out ££££s for something that's going down the plughole.
She says we all only really need 5 ingredients.
Cleanser
Vit C
Moisturizer (she just uses hyaluronic most of the time)
A retinol
SPF 50.
