Help. Orange hair

shinytinhat · 01/04/2021 11:35

Can any one help a silly person. So I got bored last week and bleached my black hair. It's now bright orange I thought I could live this way but maybe not. What's my options as I'm seeing rather contrasting results online using various toners or re bleaching??
I have moved and nowhere near me could even book me into an app. Soon As they already have their current clients booked in for a while as I don't have a hairdresser yet, otherwise I will 100% be visiting someone soon.
Please help.

Sounds like you need to bleach again as it can take more than one session to get from dark hair to blonde. Doesnt sound light enough yet for a toner

dementedpixie · 01/04/2021 12:15

Or you could go the other way and go darker again

shinytinhat · 01/04/2021 12:22

Thanks. I would like to go lighter but this has scared me a bit!

Fwiw my hair is very thick and seems ok after bleaching it just orange

Use silver shampoo (for color maintenance of grey hair). It won’t miraculously make the orange disappear but it will help to tone it down for a bit. Speaking from experience.

dementedpixie · 01/04/2021 12:30

Maybe watch some Brad Mondo videos and you'll see how not to do it Grin

Providora · 01/04/2021 12:34

I agree your choices are basically

  1. keep bleaching until you get to platinum
or
  1. use blue toning shampoo to keep the hue but calm down the orange.

Both will dry your hair out unfortunately.

You're at significant risk of your hair breaking off! You need to put a semi over it.
There's a reason us hairdressers train for years! Let this be a lesson to you.

mn81987 · 01/04/2021 12:40

@LaBellina silver saver won't make any difference to this.

shinytinhat · 01/04/2021 12:43

I have Asian black hair that I can literally hang great weights from before it breaks Grin I have had it bleached before but not for many years. I used professional products and olaplex but obviously my hair colour has highlighted quite how unprofessional I am.

I trust professionals entirely but I can't see one and got impatient.
And paying the price for it.

It did to my hair when it had turned slightly orange and was recommended to me by my hair dresser. Of course if it’s a big disaster and the OP’s hair has turned completely carrot orange it’s a different story 🥕

mn81987 · 01/04/2021 12:45

@LaBellina silver saver will only work on a level 9 or above and only if it's slightly yellow, any darker/warmer and an actual toner is required.

StuntNun · 01/04/2021 12:48

Have you toned it? My DS's dark brown hair went orangey when bleached but a toner took it down to yellow blond. I used this one from Boots then he used John Frieda Violet Crush shampoo and conditioner to maintain his colour afterwards.

LaBellina · 01/04/2021 12:55

Thanks @mn81987 I’ll keep your advice in the back of my mind in case I want to go blonde again. I’m naturally an ash brown brunette and somehow even hairdressers find it hard to get my hair to turn into a non yellow, non orange shade of blonde Confused

shinytinhat · 01/04/2021 13:10

@mn81987 thanks. I'm definitely a walking lesson as I'm quite sure if it doesn't tone down soon I could definitely replace a traffic cone.
I haven't put any toner on it. I looked into it and got the impression I need an ash toner, or a 'blue one' but after a million YouTube videos I'm more confused than ever.

This is it,

You can only tone to the level it's lifted to or darker, it's doubtful you will know yourself what level it currently is. Your only option now if you're doing it yourself is to put a darker semi on.

mn81987 · 01/04/2021 13:16

That looks like 7 but prob is a 6 in some place, so you'd need a level 6

shinytinhat · 01/04/2021 13:20

Thank you @mn81987

A colour deposit "dye" like Directions, Manic Panic etc. would work on that shade to stain it until you can get a hair appointment.

You could go an unnatural shade pink/orange/red etc. very easily. Whether you would want to, however, is another question!

shinytinhat · 01/04/2021 14:19

Ok thanks. Not sure how much my boss would enjoy pink hair zoom calls Grin could be preferable to orange I suppose.

I was going to suggest Brad Mondo! I'm addicted to his videos
shinytinhat · 01/04/2021 14:56

I've watched Brad mondo. I feel like I should have made a video for him to laugh at Grin
From those videos I'm thinking bleach one more time after waiting a while to lighten it up another level and then tone with wella t14 because that's the anti 'orange' one. And then hope for the best the Oompa Loompa look disappears ASAP.

Let us know how it goes.

I feel invested after reading this thread and watching so many Brad videos too 😁

rizzo23 · 01/04/2021 15:02

@dementedpixie Brad is definitely the one to watch. We all know that we don't put bleach on our roots first because the heat from your head makes it work faster 😂
