What proportion of your wardrobe do you wear regularly (at least once a month)?

Just that really, allowing for seasonal changes.

I’ve got too many clothes and although I like them all (they fit, right colours etc) I definitely favour some stuff over others and wonder if the rest is just getting in the way of a calm and simple existence.

I think I probably wear 30% truth be told.

It’s the 80/20 principle apparently. We wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time and 80% of our wardrobe only 20% of the time.

I’m down south so I wear the same dresses with thick tights in winter with boots, with leggings and no socks for nicer weather and then bare legs and sandals in summer.
I love my moleskin jeans. Jumpers look cosier with them in winter but they look nice and textural with thin t shirts in summer.

The other 80% sits clogging up my wardrobe waiting for me to be thinner, fatter or come back into fashion again.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 31/03/2021 22:51

Ha, I was just about to say the Pareto Principle here too!

At the start of lockdown I decided to try and never repeat an entire outfit until it was over. I didn’t expect to still be at it a year on, but it has made me wear things I would usually pass over.

PersonaNonGarter · 31/03/2021 23:39

Since Christmas I reckon I have worn about 5% of my wardrobe. The t-shirts and leggings 5%.

The 95% of accessories, various shoes, scarves, wool coats, jackets, dry cleany, formal, smart casual, denim stuff has gone untouched.

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 01/04/2021 07:19

1% if that Grin

I have a fairly small wardrobe. So, I wear all of it, all year round.

I have:

3 x jeans
2 x identical sports tights in different colours (one to wear, while one is in the wash)
2 x identical sports hoodies in different colours (as above)
2 x long sleeve tees
4 x short sleeve tees
3 x sweaters
1 x naice jumpsuit, which I can style in lots of different ways
1 x jacket
1 x bodywarmer
1 x waterproof coat
1 x duvet coat
2 x handbags (one big, beach bag and a smaller one)
1 x backpack (for groceries)

Shoes are my downfall and I have six pairs of those. I also have a few scarves a jewellery box, which is full. I want to streamline both of those categories, as I don't wear all of it. A lot of it is gifts or inherited though, (even the scarves which were my grandmother's), and I struggle to get rid of those things.

GertrudeTheGreat · 01/04/2021 08:47

Oh and I don't work in an office, which is why i think i can get away with slightly fewer clothes. Could probably get away with even less if I put my mind to it tbh.

GertrudeTheGreat · 01/04/2021 08:48

A few scarves AND a jewellery box*

GertrudeTheGreat · 01/04/2021 08:51

Forgot:

2 x shorts
1 x hat and gloves

And actually, these along with the duvet coat and body warmer wouldn't technically get worn all year round. The body warmer, most of the year. The rest are quite season specific.

I'll stop spamming the thread with my ramblings now Blush

I'd say about 70% - I have a "if I wouldn't wear it to the local pub I don't buy it rule"...which stops me from buying lovely things that just sit in my wardrobe and never get worn. And if shoes pinch even slightly I don't buy them either - because they will never get worn.

Marguerite2000 · 01/04/2021 09:02

Nearly everything that fits. I hardly have any clothes so I have to keep wearing the same things. I do have a couple of dresses that I keep for special occasions though, which haven't happened over the last yar.

GertrudeTheGreat · 01/04/2021 09:18

@Pinkraven, I like the pub rule!

I also had to get used to buying things for my lifestyle. I don't work in an office and if I go out, (in non covid times obviously), it's usually to someone's house. I have no need of eleventy million cute dresses or skirts. I have my naice jumpsuit if we ever have to go anywhere fancy. It would be fine for weddings, christenings and funerals, as it is plain navy. I can also wear it to the pub if I dress it down a bit.

I think picking clothes for their versatility is important and also knowing what it is you want to wear. If (like me) you go to your wardrobe every day and are always picking jeans and a tshirt, (because it's comfy), then you mainly need jeans and tshirts in your wardrobe and not a lot else. Ditto high heels. If you aren't naturally drawn to wearing them, then you don't need them.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/04/2021 16:31

Hard to say, because of changing things for different seasons.

I'd say these are my most worn items though:
black pencil skirt
grey pencil skirt
black skinnies
blue roll up straight leg
black jumpers times two
3 black t-shirts with long sleeves and three with short sleeves
2 biker jackets (I have more but these are the two I wear most)
3 times jersey dresses
and then in summer I've got 3 or 4 cotton dresses, a pair of shorts and some summer weight floaty tops to wear with shorts or jeans
Plus coats

Love this from @Thewinterofdiscontent

I suspect it's true for so many of us! But it's also easier just to pick from the far left few inches of the wardrobe rail...

Spodge · 01/04/2021 17:37

All of my gym kit, and I have a lot. Virtually none of my clothes. That will change once they let us out to eat again.
