Changing Hairdresser WWYD

After using the same hairdresser for the last 10 years, I'm changing to a new salon and finally have an appointment in 2 weeks.

We live in a very small town so the chances of bumping into her are high and I do feel a bit bad but I'd not been happy with my cuts and colours for a long while. Lockdown finally gave me the courage to make a change!

My question is should I message my previous hairdresser and say I'm not going back? My friend reckons no, dsis says yes but I've no idea what to say and don't want to hurt her feelings - wwyd?

I wouldn't. I've been shopping mostly in Tesco for years but on the occasion I go to Morrison's I don't phone or email the Tesco CEO to apologise. A hairdresser is a business just the same and I bet she's fully booked up having been closed for so long so I wouldn't worry.

Iamanunsafebuilding · 29/03/2021 08:33

I did. I changed hairdresser after 20 years, he wasn't listening to me any more and and was lecturing me about my over use of straighteners when the condition of my hair was actually being affected by anaemia. It began to affect my self esteem and the final straw was when I found out he was using me as an example when he was telling other clients about the perils of too much heat!

I sent him a text telling him I was going to another hairdresser because I'd had enough of being blamed for something out of my control. Never got a reply but I felt better than if I'd ghosted him.

I wouldn't message, at best they'll try and get you to stay with a discount or free style you don't want that! Or they won't care anyway.

Dopeyduck · 29/03/2021 09:16

No I wouldn't message. If I bumped in to them and they commented I'd just say oh DH got me a voucher or something for the other place and then you really liked it.

DustySpringboard · 29/03/2021 09:36

@rizzo23 I get your point but one has a completely different, more personal relationship with a hairdresser particularly if you've been seeing the same one for a decade.

I like the idea of saying dh gave me a voucher for a new salon & am staying there for the time being.

No. I'd just leave it.

bellagogosdead · 29/03/2021 09:50

No, I changed hairdresser and I have seen the old one occasionally, we just smile, it's no biggie.

daisyjgrey · 29/03/2021 09:59

I wouldn't, unless you have a relationship with them outside of having your hair done.

withlotsoflove · 29/03/2021 10:28

I had this. I just wasn’t that happy anymore.
Very intimate as it’s her business from home/ tiny town ... everyone knows each other.
I realised she’d not tried that hard for quite a while ( after l tried a new person)
I sent her a long text explaining l would find it easier to just go to a new one closer to home.
As l was messaging the original hairdresser, l was confirming an appointment with the new one.
Felt like cheating!
Fact is , original hairdresser didn’t care / mind & l have a better stylist that’s cheaper!

rookiemere · 29/03/2021 11:02

Absolutely not. Just go to new hairdressers and if you ever bump into her you could say you managed to get an appointment with the other hairdresser more quickly.
I once changed stylists in my hairdressers - original one went on mat leave and I went back to her when she returned- and it felt awkward as anything when they were both there. Then she left and I moved to him permanently.

GoWalkabout · 29/03/2021 15:24

Don't say anything but do stop and say hi if you see her. I had a hairdresser friend who was miffed that clients didn't return to her after her maternity leave, but honestly, it's not a lifetime obligation.

Spied · 29/03/2021 15:30

I'd not say anything but when you do see her and if she asks about your hair or mentions booking you in just say that your friend gave you a voucher so you went/are going to another hairdresser. I'd then chat normally about a different subject.
You don't owe them your custom.

JoyOrbison · 29/03/2021 15:34

If you see her just say "I fancied a change".

I have used same hairdresser for over 20 years, every blue moon I would try somewhere else, then after a few months be back, he is used to it and quite cheerfully says "Everyone fancies trying something new, good to see you back" and that's it.

Palavah · 30/03/2021 17:39

I would wait until you find another hairdresser you like before you say anything at all.

Lindjam · 30/03/2021 19:04

No I wouldn't bother. And I have had the same hairdresser for twenty years!!!!
