To all you wise ladies that dye your hair red.. does it bleed?

I have been using Schwarzkopf for a few years, love the colour but not matter how long I try to wash it all out in the shower, for the next few washes the dye "bleeds". With my hair type, I tend to wash it about every 3 days so often bleeds red for nearly a month and now that I am greying more and more I feel the need to dye more frequently and don't want to forever have red shower water! (as in just as it washes clear its almost time to dye again!)

Do we all experience this? Are other brands better?

Do you use shampoo formulated for colour? My salon recommends Redken.

I’ve always found this with home hair colouring, no matter what brand. Never seems to be an issue with a salon colouring.

YouBoggleMyMind · 26/03/2021 16:43

Yes mine does this. I assumed it was normal 😅

@DianaT1969 - yes I always buy shampoo/conditioner for "coloured hair". At the moment I'm using bedhead but open to other shampoo/conditioner suggestions

@bigbeautwoman - I have naturally very dark hair, not only is salon dying expensive but on the odd few occasions I treated myself, I would be there for hours and hours for my hair to actually pick up the colour. At home I just leave it on for an hour and do other household tasks and jump in the jumper! I have mega thick hair, haven't noticed this causing any issues

You have to stand in the shower agitating your hair until the water runs clear.

I've just realised I'm talking with 30 years experience. Mostly Live! From Schwartzakopf.

@Love51 - I do! Each time I shower post- hair dye, this is exactly what I do until it eventually runs clear. But somehow next time Im in the shower its got a red tint again... (I wonder if its anything to do with my type of hair, curlyish/kind of coarse)

I doubt it's your hair type. I used to dye mine red at home and always had this problem. Also got it on my pillows at night if I got sweaty. My hair is fine and poker straight.

I understand that red hair dye fades the most quickly, so the loss of colour would be consistent with that. I use (red) one from H & B, due to sensitivity issues, and I have a little bit of wash out, but not too bad.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 26/03/2021 17:34

My hair is curly though, so I don't know if that makes a difference. Not much help! Grin

If you are wanting a red colour, I’d recommend trying henna. I have a hairdresser who touches up my grey roots with henna paste as you would with a chemical hair colour. Henna doesn’t always work well over other kinds of dye so take professional advice, but henna is also much kinder to your hair and though excess colour will wash out over a few weeks, it won’t ‘bleed’ or lose brightness.

GrimDamnFanjo · 29/03/2021 18:58

Yes and mine is via a salon. You also need to wash your hair with coolish water is you can as that reduces colour loss.

elsaesmeralda · 29/03/2021 19:01

When I had red hair this happened every single wash
