Semi permanent box hair dye - will it wash out

Will it wash out or will it just fade?

Any recommendations on one that is more likely to wash out than fade, I am looking for a mid to dark brown.

I have used permanent in the past and fed up with root growth .

Thanks

I used a semi perm a couple of years ago and was really annoyed that it bleached my hair and I had roots when it started to grow out. It was absolutely permanent hair dye despite being labelled as semi perm. Can’t remember for sure which one it was but standard box dye from boots, L’Oréal I think

Anything that involves mixing two products together is a permanent dye, whatever it says on the box.

For a genuine wash out colour, I like Josh Wood glosses. Quite expensive but really good. Wella Color Fresh is also one to try.

I did look at the Josh Wood gloss but it says if you have lighter bits of hair it will give undesirable results.

As I am growing out my gray I have a line of roots about 3" which are darkish/gray but the longer lengths are lightish brown which is starting to have a bit of a ginger vibe to it so wanted to put on a mid to dark brown that will wash out in maybe 24 washes rather than fade.

It isn't what you asked, but would one of spray on root colours work for you? I have the Superdrug one, and also a dab on Josh Wood one.

No, take it from someone who tried mahogany once (16 washes and gone) - no my hair was tinged red for a year

I've used Casting Creme Gloss which fades and washes out after a month or two and leaves my hair in good condition.

Like @itsallhere, I was also annoyed with the L'Oréal one which bleached my hair and spoiled its condition

Brian9600 upthread said if you need to mix two elements together then it means it is permanent even though it says semi permanent and it looks as if Casting Creme Gloss needs to be mixed unfortunately.

I had this with semi permanent.

Put it on as a desperate measure last spring and the hairdresser told me when I finally got there it was permanent. I would never have done it if I'd known. Wasn't even a nice colour.

Hmmm, how difficult is it to find a semi permanent, it just seems wrong. I aim to let the grey grow but would like the idea of a temporary cover up in the meantime.

24 washes sounds ideal but also sounds near on impossible. I have tried the Wella color fresh but that one you just leave in and it is a bit light on my hair and needs doing every 3 washes or so.

I used casting creme gloss in iced latte on my mid brown hair for a couple of years. It left my hair completely brassy and my hairdresser has to dye my hair back to close to it's natural colour so I could let the grey grow through naturally without the horrid grey/brassy contrast.

KirstenBlest · 30/03/2021 16:53

I've used them. Use a colour close to your natural colour. They fade away after a few weeks.

They contain hydrogen peroxide, so will lighten your hair slightly.

If you go much darker or redder it will be slightly less semi-permanent.

I think semi permanent dyes are usually a mix of permanent bleach and temporary colour. So the colour will fade but the lightening effect won't.
