Alternatives to the granny cardigan

I have always struggled with getting the balance between the formality of a jacket (bit ott for our work environment) and the informality of things like jumpers/sweatshirts/hoodies so have ended up with the compromise of the granny cardigan.
Is there any alternative?

Fine knit tops
I mainly wear dresses for work tbh and then dress them up or down with shoes and jewellery

MiddlesexGirl · 26/03/2021 13:44

Blazers are too formal really. I wear dresses mostly and even that is more formal than average.

Do you wear a fine knit top over a dress? Or what would you wear over a dress if not?

Would a denim jacket be too informal? They look good with most dresses and can be thin / light enough to wear inside

Midlifephoenix · 26/03/2021 13:48

I like those long line knitted duster length cardigan/jackets like this.

What about a shacket!

TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 26/03/2021 14:02

I wear the “works in a school” uniform of dresses ,tights and boots every day - I wear a minute of cardigans , thin fine knit jumpers over the top and various jackets - they are relaxed fit , no big shoulder pads , and don’t look too formal in my opinion - H&M and Zara usually have loads . Definitely not corporate wear .

ZaraW · 26/03/2021 14:08

I have a boucle wool collarless short jacket from Jigsaw which works well. Have had it for about 10 years.

Knitted blazers. Star

This sort of thing?

I am this uniform too! And I do wear cardigans similar to @Midlifephoenix Are they not a bit grannyish?

Denim jacket I would like Grin ... maybe need to work on finding one provides warmth.

Some of the other jackets are still a bit too formal really but some of the shackets look good .... getting a balance between warmth, 'style' and the right level of formality ... not too much, not too little. Am I overthinking this? 🙃

You are overthinking. Cardigans are one of my favourite things. They keep you warm, can easily be removed if too hot and such choice of styles!. Grannies know what's what.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/03/2021 17:16

This sort of thing, worn unfastened?

This is expensive but I've been wearing it so much as not as formal as a jacket, but smarter and less frumpy than a cardigan www.oohrubyshoes.com/products/sibin-linnebjerg-lulu-cardigan-black?variant=26339541319780

borntobequiet · 26/03/2021 17:30

I wear a shawl. But I’m a granny.

CatSickYellowSocks · 26/03/2021 17:36

I LOVE a cardi! So many styles to choose from! You could try mixing it up with a cropped cardi, or different styles like chunky arran, popcorn knit, balloon sleeves or something like that. Adds a bit of interest but also keeps you warm :)

Salanda · 26/03/2021 17:56

Nothing wrong with a cardigan but maybe you’ve not got the right ones. The long shapeless ones don’t really do anyone any favours.

How about something like these, I can imagine they’d look good over dresses or with skirts or jeans/trousers. Perhaps something cropped similar. Fitted and a little more deliberate than a shapeless cardigan chucked over a dress.

I love the knitwear from here too:

Some really good ideas here ... thank you all.
I loved that sezane first one (may avoid the semi naked look though Grin)
The M&S jacket too.
And yes to chunkier knits.

I have this in almost every colour. I tend to wear them over crew neck t-shirts, but also over midi length dresses.

requitalissima · 27/03/2021 08:57

Alternative to a granny cardigan is grandpa's vest. The most must-have piece this spring. Argyle pattern a bonus.
Tis' is why I don't do trends as grandpa or no grandpa, I will not sport a knitted vest. Ever. No matter what Paris Vogue demands.
Hmm

Sooverthemill · 27/03/2021 11:11

@MiddlesexGirl I have the sezane Achilles and it's oversized so you should go small! For example I am a 10 usually but in sezane knitwear I am usually an Xs or XXS. They are lovely though

Tehmina23 · 27/03/2021 11:45

I got a black & white tweed fitted cardi with gold buttons from River Island- more Chanel style than Granny.
Also they have some decent dogstooth styles in various colours.

The preppy look with varsity cardis & cricket jumpers is another look that's in fashion & is quite smart.

I get non granny cardis from Zara, Lipsy at Next, New Look & Primark as well as River Island.

waltzingparrot · 27/03/2021 21:30

Here's a couple of cardigans my granny would never have worn - mainly because they haven't even got buttons on.
