Make up doesn't stay on my skin

JM10 · 24/03/2021 20:03

Every morning I put on makeup, but lunchtime it looks like I didn't bother. It's either massive pores or oil slick shiny (or both!).

I've tried so many foundations, primers, moisturisers, serums and nothing helps. My skin has got older looking in the last 6 months too.

Anyone got any magic solutions?

Have you tried using a loose powder? I use Coty Airspun to set my makeup and I really think it makes a big difference. I use l'oreal infallible primer under revlon colourstay foundation. Nothing stops the mask rubbing it off the bottom half of my face though Sad

JM10 · 24/03/2021 20:23

Yeah. I normally have a liquid foundation with a loose powder on top, I haven't tried the one you use though. I feel like I've tried pretty much every one my local boots sells!

I have similar problems and the only foundation I like is Estée Lauder double wear foundation. It’s not perfect but it’s far better than any other foundation I’ve used.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 24/03/2021 20:30

What are you applying, what's your routine

JM10 · 24/03/2021 20:35

I don't have a set routine at the moment because I keep trying different things to see if it makes a difference.

Often I do a vitamin c oil/serum on my cheeks, another oil/serum (forgotten it's name) on my forehead and nose, then moisturiser. The oils are new though in an attempt to improve things, they've neither made it better not worse.

Then a primer - normally a thickish crema one from superdrug either mattifying or poor smoothing or both. I've been trying s bit of a mallow one at the moment because despite the shinyness, my cheeks have been dry some days.

Then foundation - either body shop clay, Laura Mercier or pixi. Then a translucent loose powder.

I'm 42 and have always had oily skin and large pores - fairly wrinkle-free tho which is about the only bonus! My recent learning is it's all about the prep and skincare rather than the makeup - so a really good cleanser (I love the Emma Hardie balm) The ordinary products have been great for me - particularly the Lactic acid and 'B' oil. any facial oil/serum (Alpha H Liquid Gold also good) before bed sees me less oily in the morning - I know that sounds weird! Also the Benefit Porefessional range is good - the primer and the powder. Nars concealer all the way too! I feel your pain tho! XXX

sabrinathemiddleagewitch · 24/03/2021 20:38

I wouldn't be putting any serums or oils on your face in the morning and then putting makeup on top?

Oil free moisturiser and then foundation would serve you much better

Save the skincare for days without makeup and evenings

Watchingthetelly · 24/03/2021 20:39

So hard to get it to stay!! I use the urban decay setting spray which does help a good bit, but I would still need to reapply make up by the late afternoon.

ZubinB · 24/03/2021 20:41

sorry, the powder is Too Faced that i recommend - pic attached

ZubinB · 24/03/2021 20:43

totally agree with keeping oils and serums for night time - just cleanse and a moisturiser with SPF for the morning X

JM10 · 24/03/2021 21:02

Right, just checked and it's niacinamide serum and vitamin c super booster. I had wondered if they'd be better left for evening, but honestly having them in the morning hasn't made any difference anyway.

I've tried porefessional primer and been unimpressed.

I guess there is no onemagic answer that works for everyone or there wouldn't be so many different products to buy. I just feel like mode 30s I should have figured out how my skin works by now!

Too much product! Take it right back. I just use a night time moisturiser and tinted moisturiser in the day now.

Cinderellashoes · 24/03/2021 21:30

Try just a moisturiser and oil free foundation for a day, see how it goes. Beautifully matte by number 7 is a good one

WutheringShites86 · 24/03/2021 21:34

I'm a total oil slick to the point that in the morning when I wake up if I rub my face I literally wipe oil off Sad. Nothing works completely but trial and error has kept me going back to the same products for a while.

Body shop seaweed range is good. No7 matte foundation too. No7 have a good matte mousse one too but no spf in it unfortunately.

Rimmel insta matte powder works best for me and then I use blotting papers as needed as the day goes on.

Tried lots of matte primers, currently on a soap and glory one whose name I've forgotten, something about a blot.

Same!

Thank you everyone, I'll try some of the products recommended. Two for no7 Matt foundation, so I'll definitely try that.

My face eats my make up too. I always look pretty shiny.

I’m thinking of going back to a mineral powder foundation as I think dry product + oily skin might be better than cream product + oily skin. It’s not like I’m going to look dry/dusty.

JustGiveMeGin · 25/03/2021 06:28

My makeup lasts all day on my fairly oily skin. The thing I have learnt is not to fight the oil! No oil removing cleansers etc (i actually use an oily facial wash and the Aldi hot cloth cleanser) followed by a anti wrinkle day time moisturiser.
Let the moisturiser soak in then apply primer, liquid foundation, powder and a decent setting spray. I top the powder up through the day as and when needed but its every few hours at most.
My skin has never been better since I stopped trying to fight against it!

Oblomov21 · 25/03/2021 06:41

Same here. Very oily, since teenager. Nothing makes any difference.

userintgerain · 25/03/2021 06:57

It might be that your skin is dehydrated so it produces excess oil to compensate. A hydrating mist then hyluronic acid, then a moisturiser in the morning.

violetbunny · 25/03/2021 08:00

I have super oily skin - it's shiny again within an hour or two of washing. I'm also a total makeup addict so literally have a full drawer full of foundations I've tried and tested. Here's my advice based on years of trial and error, and having spent a small fortune spent on product....

  • Skincare: You want your skin to be well plumped and hydrated, but not greasy. I would definitely not use oils on oily skin under makeup. If you need a bit more hydration then try a non greasy hydrating serum under moisturiser, e.g. a hyaluronic acid serum. Let all your skincare sink for a few minutes before applying foundation. Feel your skin with your hands before applying primer/makeup - does it feel in any way greasy?
  • Mattifying primers can help, but only so much. You need to make sure you have the kind of foundation that will adhere well to skin once it dries down so that it's long wearing. You don't mention the specific type of foundations you're using (e.g. Laura Mercier have foundations that are long wearing and some that aren't). The best way to test if a foundation is long wearing is to try some on the back of your hand. Let it dry then rub it. If it moves, don't buy it!!
  • Great longwear liquid foundations that are not too heavy for everyday are Dior Forever (the matte liquid in a bottle), the Ellis Faas liquid foundation, and Bobbi Brown Skin Longwear foundation.
  • Alternatively you could try a powder foundation as these absorb oil better. If you don't like powder foundations much and prefer liquid, then wet-to-dry compact powder formulas can be a good compromise.
  • When you powder over liquid foundation, apply it with a puff and press it into your skin in a "press and roll" motion. This presses the powder into the skin so it won't get as oily as it would when applied with a brush. If you're not sure what to do, there are plenty of YouTube videos on this technique.
  • Blotting papers are your friend. Not the paper kind. Buy some Clean & Clear ones (I get mine off EBay). They're far superior.
  • Carry a powder compact for touch ups.
  • Don't use setting sprays. They're generally not actually that good at extending wear on very oily skin.
QueenPaw · 25/03/2021 16:55

Setting spray under your makeup is worth a go, you want to stop the oil coming through

lindyloo57 · 25/03/2021 17:45

This used to happen to me , I now use a powder foundation, i have oily skin, yesterday I used max factor one, and when I clean my face at night there was lots left on my face cloth, so it had lasted well around 12 hours.

BibbityBobbety · 25/03/2021 19:20

I have this! Especially my eyes, all the eye make up I wear is all over my face by lunchtime.

Some good tips here I might try! I have this Korean no sebum mineral powder from Innisfree with jeju natural minerals. It's good but can leave a slightly white cast, so you need to dab it in properly. But it does seem to hold the oil off for longer than other Mattifying powders.

Could also try an oily skin setting spray? I have one from nip & fab that seems alright.

Otherwise blotting papers are my friend!

I use the Mac Pro longwear waterproof foundation and it's the only one that doesn't slide off! Yet easy to remove.
