Resent paying £40 for a ten minute hair cut!

I have fine, soft, straight hair. I don’t want layers or shaping, I just want a straight trim. It takes less than ten minutes to do, more like five. But round here I get charged £40 for the privilege!

Other than asking DH to re-train as a hairdresser, what are my options?!

Find a cheaper hairdresser , perhaps a mobile one , our one charges £20 for a cut / dry (SE) .

Lurkingforawhile · 17/03/2021 09:13

It might be your best option if your DH could do it. Mine did my trim in lockdown and for a first attempt it was pretty good. Lots of guides on YouTube. Just watch out for the hair splinters!

StephenBelafonte · 17/03/2021 09:22

have you done any price comparisons with other local hairdressers?

CMOTDibbler · 17/03/2021 09:25

I usually go to a very unpromising place which is primarily a barbers but which also does ladies cuts. £15, I get the cut I want, no faffing, in and out, and in normal times no need to book

DancesWithDaffodils · 17/03/2021 09:38

You need a different type of hairdressers.
Not one that us all about the experience, and charges for the fact, but one that works on the basis of lots of traffic at a lower price can be equally profitable.

Agree with PP - a more barber type salon, which also does ladies cuts could he a good starting point.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 18/03/2021 04:07

Your DH should be able to do it with a pair of hairdressing scissors from Boots. I get DD 13 to cut mine

supercee · 18/03/2021 04:20

Go to your local college? You'll get it done super cheap by the trainees.

bellagogosdead · 18/03/2021 07:22

I have started going to somewhere outside the town centre, I think it was £18 last summer for just a wet cut. I spent years paying £40 and being disappointed.

Lurkingforawhile · 19/03/2021 21:09

Good idea from PP about the college. When I was back at uni for the year I had a day a week at home so I went to the college for cuts.

dementedma · 19/03/2021 21:10

£15 here for a trim. I colour it myself.

LunaHeather · 19/03/2021 21:13

In London you can find a hairdresser who would do that for £10 but they will need to up their prices.

Your DH can probably do it fine. Mum's done mine and my boss has even tidied up a front layer I bodged with my layering scissors 😂

savvy7 · 20/03/2021 08:22

Get your DH to do it, even if just every other time. My DH has been cutting my hair in lockdown with proper hairdressing scissors and I'm thinking of continuing as I always found going to the hairdressers a bit of a faff - in for an hour for a 5 minute trim

violetbunny · 20/03/2021 08:29

Surely it's about the level of skill involved rather than the time spent?

Aria2015 · 20/03/2021 08:44

Shop around for cheaper or just have a wet cut. Often the blow dry on top adds a lot. I just get a wet cut now. It's way cheaper and quite frankly, I can style my own hair better than any hairdresser ever has.

NeedToGetOuttaHere · 20/03/2021 16:35

I spend that amount for a cut that doesn’t take long but look on as is not as how long it took to cut but how I’m happy with my hair for 7-9 weeks.

PilatesPeach · 20/03/2021 17:00

My handyman who is also my bubble trims mine at the back with my hairdressing scissors and I do my fringe. He also does my roots with a Clairol box dye - same principle as cutting in when he is painting! Cut hair wet, cut fringe dry. One length at the back so dead easy.

Lamentations · 20/03/2021 21:02

I like the sound of your handyman PilatesPeach

PilatesPeach · 21/03/2021 05:47

Thanks @Lamentations - I went for a walk on Friday with a friend and she asked me where I had managed to get my hair done during lockdown - she said it looked like I had been to a salon!

Highforareason · 21/03/2021 09:07

I hate the faff of hairdressers with a passion, so for a good number of years my DH has cut mine. Bought a pair of hairdressing scissors, and I cut my fringe.
