Could I have some suggestions please? I am 51 and hear this would be the best exercise for weight loss. I am very flexible but have some pain in one knee. I am about 1 st overweight.

I do the Joe Wicks hand weights one from about 12 months ago. He does 7 exercises, then repeats 4 times. So by round three you know it’s nearly over! I have increased the amount of weight over time. I also do hiit training. I find jumping lunges don’t feel great on my knees, so I do something else or static lunges.
I feel so much better for it. I do weights 1-2 times a week. Hiit 2-3 times a week (so 4 days at least combined). Then I walk 8km a day minimum.

Don’t rule out starting the Joe Wicks exercise that he started last lock down. I started in April last year and have had great results and more importantly (for me) I’ve stuck at it! Because it’s daily you could play in order but maybe switch for weights one day a week? I then added the weights about 4 months ago.

thank you I'll look up Joe Wicks 🌺

Thank you. I wonder if there's anything specifically geared for exercising with weights and weight loss in menopause? I'm just looking for something a little more relatable as a menopausal 51 year old woman.

Do you use dumb bells or kettle bells ?
What’s the recommended weight to start with I really need to do weight bearing exercises

Les Mills body pump, not specifically for perimenopausal but women of all ages were doing it at the gym and it is fab.

Considering the knee, go without weights for the lunge and squat tracks and wear a knee support (tbh I'd wear one for any type of exercise). If you have a gym ball available, for the squat track put it between the wall and your back and roll it up and down.

I lost almost 12 kilos of menopause weight gain using heavy weights and resistance bands. I did a few sessions with a PT so I could learn the correct techniques and then worked out on my own at least 3 days a week, and then would see the PT once a month to modify my routine. I did no HIIT whatsoever.

I have lighter weights (5kg) I use at home and various resistance bands. Video-wise, I actually like Davina's fit in 10 as there's a really good arms work-out. Can't wait to go back to the gym though as there's no substitute for a well equipped weights sections with a trap bar.

Be aware that diet was hugely important too, if not more than the exercise. In order to build muscle (which will burn fat), you need to eat properly.

Good luck OP!

Also, OP, how are your hormones? I only started to lose weight once I was on the correct HRT.

AnotheChinHair · 17/03/2021 12:04

Thank you all. Yes, I am on HRT patches.
The compression thing for my knee makes sense. It's horrible to have that feeling that something's about to 'give'!!
I feel like an old woman when barely a year ago I was fine. My lower back hurts too.
I am using 3Kg dumbbells. I consider myself fairly strong but couldn't possibly manage more weight that that. That's 3Kg each hand by the way.

I have a friend who is a PT and I have trained with her on and off for 10 years, starting at 50, now 61! For info she has given me 30/40 min sessions to do 4 times a week - all weight/resistance focused to maintain muscle mass. I am fitter now than ever before. In keeping with that the only person she has found and rates on the internet is Shona Vertue. Lots of videos on youtube but she has a short course for £14.99 for older women with her mum -www.shonavertue.com/vertue-method-for-life.html. Looks like a good place to start. She is very hot on good form.
I haven't done it but like her other videos. She does lots of yoga too.
