What's the difference between an item intentionally designed to be oversized, and buying a bigger size to create the same effect?

Anyone know? It's something I often wonder.

I think it’s that something designed to be oversized will still fit in certain places, like shoulders and arm lengths rather than just being big all over.

Yes - this. I love an “oversize” jumper or hoodie, but borrowing my husband’s clothes just doesn’t have the same effect - the shoulders are too wide, sleeves too long, overall length too long etc (and he’s only 6 inches taller than me).

I don't know, but I do tend to size up in some items. I hate tight waistbands for example, so in jeans which are pure cotton without stretch, I size up.

I also sometimes buy mens jumpers as they tend to come up a bit longer, with longer sleeves and are cheaper for decent wool and straightforward designs! I'm wearing one as we speak actually.

Yes, came on to say the same - shoulders, sleeves, waistband on trousers/skirts.

Just what others said:

buying in a larger size = an item that’s roomy all over.

Buying your size in an oversized fit = an item that’s roomy in the right places, should be more flattering

I think it's just designed to fit a different body shape. Like for example, you could be petite but if you tried to wear a child's clothes the cut would look wrong and they aren't designed to emphasise the waist area.

And re getting in a bigger size I think then it's big all over whereas oversized might be slightly more fitted in one place

As PP said if you were to just get a jumper or top, for example, in a bigger sized, you might find Feb seems on the shoulders and the sleeves are quite wide whereas if it's oversized it will still be designed to fit the proportions of someone that size.

It’s just the cut. I have several oversized dresses from Monki, and the shoulders, length and sleeves are perfect on me. If I had bought a regular dress in a size 16 (I’m a 10) all those bits would be in the wrong place. Likewise i have oversized balloon fit jeans from Zara which are my normal size, and fit perfectly at the waist. Going up a few sizes would make them all bunchy.

On a similar note, I’ve bought dresses from tall ranges before because the regular range was too short - every single time the proportions have been a bit out, and I have ended up selling or donating them after a couple of wears.

My petite dd had to give up trying to find an oversize denim jacket she was desperate for when they were popular last year. She tried on dozens.

Ah the shoulders. I was looking at COS and their things just look all over big, but maybe not. I shall be examining the shoulders!

Yes, I'm 5'7" but once bought a petit dress because it was long and I have a high waist.
