Cheap but environmentally friendly body oil?

Pinkclarko · 14/03/2021 11:12

To save time and money I’ve been decanting baby oil into a spray bottle for after a shower for as long as I can remember and it works for me. I’m trying to swap for more environmentally friendly alternatives where I can and I’m looking for something that is probably less polluting and/or ethically sourced. And if I can buy a job lot of it in a big old container that would be a bonus! Hoping one of you can help me, TIA x

I think you can make your own relatively cheaply! I can't say I've actually tried it yet, but I'm planning to when I run out of body butter.

Might try this one.

Almond oil? I use it on my hair. Got a massive bottle off Amazon I think (can't actually remember, got it ages ago!) I think it's meant to be for adding essential oils to / making diffuser oil with but works on my hair so assume it'd work on skin too? I use coconut oil on my hair too but I guess the consistency at room temp would make that more of a faff as a moisturiser than being able to squirt it from a bottle?

Greenvalleysightseeker · 14/03/2021 14:37

I would say almond oil too, I got a large bottle recently and use it on my hair but it can be used on the body and face too. Its lovely in the bath too, makes my skin really soft and smooth.

APurpleSquirrel · 14/03/2021 14:48

You can absolutely make your own. Almond is a great all-rounder if you just want a plain oil.
If you want to add essential oils to add scent & additional benefits make sure you get the correct ratio.
Here are two recipes from the Neal's Yard Beauty Book - these are made in smaller quantities to maintain freshness but you could scale up.
You can also make your own formulation depending on your skin type/needs & preferred smells.

Here's the recipe

It’s not cheap but I love Nuxe oil. It lasts ages and smells like holidays.
Glass bottles, vegan, ethical ingredient sources and no parabens.

Babyiskickingmyribs · 14/03/2021 15:02

Coconut oil melts at about 25’c. So if you have a glass bottle of it you can take it into the shower with you and it’ll be liquid by the time you’re finished showering. I don’t think it would work well in a spray bottle though.

FelicityBeedle · 14/03/2021 15:16

Almond oil isn’t great environmentally as memory serves, similar reasons to almond milk being problematic, I think jojoba is ok footprint wise. I know coconut is on a level with palm oil.

Pinkclarko · 14/03/2021 16:42

Thanks all, this is the type of thing I was after. Yes, after going down the rabbit hole a bit it does seem almond oil has a bad rep. I’ll investigate jojoba!

@AnaisNun unfortunately Nuxe isn’t cruelty-free though, which is a real shame.

Damfino · 14/03/2021 17:05

Years ago at baby massage, we were told to use sunflower oil.

For me though, I prefer grapeseed, jojoba or peach kernel oil.

I wouldn't buy them in massive amounts as they can go rancid if not stored in a cool, dark place.

SummaLuvin · 14/03/2021 18:16

If you mean that you are avoiding palm oil then look into that issue deeper if you haven't already.

Deforestation and loss of habitat for animals is awful, but it isn't as simple as switching to an alternative oil/fat source. Palm oil has a highly efficient yield (why it's so popular), by all means switch to coconut oil or similar, but we can't pretend that sudden increased demand for that doesn't present it's own sustainability, ethical, and logistical challenges.

whymewhyme · 14/03/2021 18:27

Make your own, sweet almond oil, few drops of your fav essential oil!

AnaisNun · 14/03/2021 22:05

@Saurus72

I thought they didn’t animal test!?

WhiskyWhiskersdottir · 15/03/2021 04:11

Akoma Skincare has a selection of well priced and ethically sourced oils. Fishing is another good place to try. Both sites have plenty of information about the usage of particular oils

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 15/03/2021 04:29

Jojoba oil is lovely & a little goes a long way x

Pinkclarko · 15/03/2021 19:53

I’m also thinking of how it’s produced and what happens when it gets washed off again although I may be over thinking things there!
