Interview suits (not wanting to look dated!)

I'm starting to venture back into the working world and thinking about interview suits/outfits if I get that far. I'm mid 40s, size 14/16, and I'm conscious I don't want to look too dated. It was a big concern of mine before where the younger people on my teams looked so stylish (think Reiss) whereas I felt a bit stuck in a time warp (blazer and matching skirts). What do people wear for interviews (finance) now? Is it still skirt suits and trouser suits, and should they only be dark? I'd love something different from say COS but they don't do matching suits. Reiss is too pricey. I don't want to spend tons so less than 150 if poss.

How tall are you? Honestly, I'm not keen - I think the length makes them look a bit dated.

Orchidflower1 · 09/03/2021 21:35

No fashion advice at all @Eesha but just to say good luck with your interviews and the next stage in your life.

Eesha · 09/03/2021 21:41

@trunumber im 5ft 6. Are you saying they should be longer or shorter?

@Orchidflower1 thank you! It's a bit daunting especially as I'm a single mum and I'm not sure how to navigate flexible working either! Fingers crossed though.

@misscockerspaniel

Thanks for this thread, I have been wondering the same thing.

Would a v-neck rather than a round neck look better on someone who is busty?

Yes, in my experoence
ThePricklySheep · 11/03/2021 07:58

Sorry to hear that. Hope you can get some feedback.

I wear dresses now. It's good to feel comfortable and can we made a little more formal with a jacket. Good luck.

Disfordarkchocolate · 11/03/2021 08:08

Where you able to get an idea of what was their idea of acceptable work wear on the day @Eesha? I've found Ive got more jobs since I started dressing for confidence and comfort instead of in a dull suit. I don't work in the corporate worlds though.

Me again! Another day another interview

@Disfordarkchocolate i think smart casual would work for my latest interview place.

Personally, I can’t be doing with suits. I much prefer separates that work well together. If you are large of nork, the right jacket shape matters - something with narrowish lapels and a deep V neckline, maybe a one-button fastening and quite a fitted waistline. A touch of lycra helps too! Then choose toning or contrasting trousers to complement. I don’t wear heels and unless you work somewhere very corporate and stuffy, I actually think smart trainers would look great for every day. Maybe some good loafers or brogues for an interview?

Eesha · 02/05/2021 07:29

@Craftycorvid i like the mixed separates look but don't think i can get away with trainers for a second interview.
