what are dungarees actually meant to look like?

I love the look of them on other people but have been finding it hard to track down a size 8 petite.
So I have these. But are they too big?
Please be gentle but honest. I am trying to be more daring.

Roll them up at the hem.

UhtredRagnarson · 08/03/2021 14:41

As dungarees go they’re not awful but I find lost people looks better with some distance between them and any dungarees. They’re really tricky to look good in.

popularinthe80s · 08/03/2021 14:44

Hmm. I will try the rolling.
I wanted 'tom boyish' but I fear this is 'I've come to fix your damp.'
(Not that there's anything wrong with fixing your damp).

I think they are a bit big so something slimmer might work better. I think they also need to be rolled up just above the ankle. I prefer them with a blouse underneath.

Look at Gayle rinkoff on Instagram. I love how she styles them with pretty jumpers and blouses

doodleygirl · 08/03/2021 14:46

It doesn’t matter how they are meant to look, if you don’t feel great wearing them, send em back. That’s my golden rule, if you have to ask you don’t love the item.

I like them on you.

ProfMcGonigle · 08/03/2021 14:51

You need a slimmer-fitting pair, shoulder straps need to be shortened and legs should be rolled up.

Wear them with a pretty girls blouse or cute white T shirt and chunky white trainers or converse/ vans etc

You look quite small so maybe a teen pair? Next kids had them that my DD (16) looked great in

popularinthe80s · 08/03/2021 14:52

Thank you. I think I will let the dungarees settle in my mind. Can't tell if it's the shock of the new or they just aren't right.
The rolling definitely helps. Gosh, I'm such a geek.

I think they look great on you, but I agree that rolling up the hem would make them look even better.

popularinthe80s · 08/03/2021 16:53

Thank you:-)

@ProfMcGonigle the teen idea is actually a good one.

Have you tried Lucy and Yak?

popularinthe80s · 08/03/2021 17:11

No - don't they only do regular leg length?

OP posts:
huuuuunnnndderrricks · 08/03/2021 17:45

Like this IMO .. I wear them tighter , shorter and with a tight top underneath . I think black ones look less farmery . I also don't like black shoes with blue denim but I may be in the minority . They aren't very flattering on your skin frame . I think they work better on hourglass shapes but at least get them to be much much tighter .. unless you are going for the Lucy and Zak look which is different again but much looser the other way!

They look too long and too big TB H.

LadyCatStark · 08/03/2021 17:50

I have the teenage Next ones 😂. They need to be a slimmer fit and rolled up at the bottom as others have said.

NowWhatUsernameShallIHave · 08/03/2021 17:51

Yes roll them up which will help to slim them
There’s nothing wrong with them ans dungarees can be slouchy or tight fitting

The seam going round the middle is in the right place so you’re ok

FourTurnings · 08/03/2021 19:11

I think, given how slim you are, you could find a pair that do more for you. I think dungarees are either meant to be quite snug fitting or properly baggy and those seem halfway between. IMHU

FourTurnings · 08/03/2021 19:11

IMHO I mean 😀

Dozer · 08/03/2021 19:14

Too big!

popularinthe80s · 08/03/2021 20:32

Thanks everyone for frank replies. I'm very late to the fashion game...

Bagelsandbrie · 08/03/2021 20:42

They need rolling up and you need a gap between the bottom and your trainers - with no visible socks or if you’re doing visible socks they need to clash and be bright. Look at the Lucy and Yak website for styling ideas - they’re the original dungaree people! (Well not original but pretty quirky and fun)!

SirVixofVixHall · 08/03/2021 20:46

There is too much volume at the crotch and top of your thighs, you either need something smaller and slimmer that fits you better or something more oversized - wider, so that the crotch is lower and the whole thing is loose.

midsomermurderess · 08/03/2021 23:23

They can make you look like a plumber, or else a children's TV presenter (those Lucy and Yak ones come to mind). You have to choose carefully.

Try boohoo for fitted petite dungarees, they'll be much more flattering and cheap enough that you're not wasting a fortune if you hate them
