Life on the edge: Tinting brows at home

LittlestBoho · 07/03/2021 23:41

So I have reached the 'fuck it all' stage of the pandemic and am planning to tint my own eyebrows because nothing matters anymore. Has anybody done this? If yes, can you please advise:

  1. Which is the best dye to use.
  2. The best application techniques and top tips.
  3. How to fade the dye when I inevitably end up looking like a badly put together Mrs Potatohead.

Bonus question: Can I do my own lashes too or will I make myself go blind?

Thank you Style and Beautinators

I tint my own eye lashes, is very easy to do, just quite time consuming because you have to do it one eye at a time.
I use Refectocil - was recommended by a beautician. It's two parts to mix together.
I have a small tub of vasaline i paint around my eye first, cut some cotton wool pads to the right shape to sit close to the bottom eyelashes and paint it on.
lay back and leave it to work for 15 mins or so and rinse it off with clean water on another pad.
Never had any problems, just need to be careful when painting it onto your lashes.
No experience with eye brows though.

I use eyelure dybrow, after being really unimpressed with 'HD brows'
2 part, mix, apply. I wipe any that's really outside my brow shape - but it hasn't stained my skin yet. Then I pluck to shape after.
Pre-covid I used once every six weeks, and one box lasts ages!

I recently applied non permanent hair dye without ammonia on my brows in desperation (While doing my roots touch up) . It worked really well actually. Will do it every time from now on.

Sorefret · 08/03/2021 07:32

I do my own lashes. Have never been brave enough to try brows.

silentpool · 08/03/2021 07:57

I do both brows and lashes. Make sure you:

Dont go too dark for your colouring. Im brunette and use dark brown. ( I do blue-black on my eyelashes though)
For my first time, I left it on for 5 mins because I was terrified to overdo it but now it goes on for 10 mins.
Vaseline round the brows, means no mess.

thethoughtfox · 08/03/2021 07:58

I do it all the time. I'll like to the kit from Amazon ( they also sell in Boots) It is foolproof and the pack has enough to do multiple times and should last at least a year.

Another vote for the Eyelure kit for eyebrows. It's brilliant.

ElizaLaLa · 08/03/2021 09:18

Can you use eyebrow dye on your lashes? I've got a shwarskopf (sp?) eyebrow kit I haven't used yet and wouldn't mind doing both at the same time.

TheBullfinch · 08/03/2021 12:38

Ive used hair dye on eyebrows before now. Dark cool blonde better than warm blonde.

For lashes, I use Eyelure in brown. Works a treat but a bit of a faff. Doesnt give me under eye shadows like black does.

NOTE: if some of your brows/lashes are white blonde like mine, they can turn ginger. Shock

Greenvalleysightseeker · 08/03/2021 13:53

I use Just for Men beard dye, it works great. I’ll never pay someone to do ever again. It takes ten minutes, I just go around my brow with Vaseline on a cotton bud, mix a blob of the colour with the developer and spread it on. I start with the thinner half of my brow, then a minute or two later put some on the thicker top part and wipe it all off with micellar water after five minutes or so.
I use dark brown, I was worried mid brown would end up ginger. I’m naturally mousy brown with blonde highlights.
I tried once to do my lashes but it wasn’t dark enough and didn’t make any difference so I’d probably need black instead.

LittlestBoho · 08/03/2021 14:22

Thanks everyone! You've made it sound very easy. I've ordered the Eyelure in dark brown and I'll start with 5 minutes so I don't look like Angry Baby from The Simpsons.

I did mine recently. Eyelure.

sarahb083 · 10/03/2021 06:48

I just use box dye and it works fine. I brush it on with a mascara wand, leave for 5-10 min, and rinse off with hot water. Very quick and cheap.

DailyCandy · 10/03/2021 08:23

I use Refectocil because it's quicker than Eyelure.
Also they used it at the Benefit counter when i had my brows done there.

Please do an allergy test I had a serious reaction to brown eyebrow dye (and this was after I’d had it done numerous times). It took about 12 months to go away completely. It’s the ingredient PPD that some people are allergic to

Oh my goodness Shock Yes I definitely will. I don't want my face to swell up like a balloon.

I've been doing my own eyelashes/brows for ages. You can buy salon tint and the separate peroxide developer on eBay. I use Strictly Professional brand £4/5 but there's a few. Dark brown for brows and blue/black for lashes. The developer last ages as you just need as much drops to make a non drip cream consistency.

Protect the skin and I paint it on with a thick eyeliner brush. 10 mins for lashes and about 5 for my brows. Colour takes to mine quickly tho so sometimes I take it off quickly and can always reapply if they're not dark enough. Better that way than too long and too dark brows!

Wondermule · 10/03/2021 10:49

Another vote for Eyelure. So easy to use. A few tips:

If you accidentally dye your skin, don’t panic, it fades in about 2-3 days
Before tinting, wash your eyebrows thoroughly with a non moisturising soap (imperial leather or something like that) and dry thoroughly to remove grease etc so the dye takes better
Use the little brush in upwards and downwards motions to make sure you catch all the hairs
Have a cotton bud with you so you can remove any spills

Let us know how it goes!

tobee · 10/03/2021 22:44

I had a red itchy patch test reaction to Refectocil so dumped that and used Godefroy with no problem. From Amazon. Worked well and with no fuss.

RunningFromInsanity · 10/03/2021 22:48

I use eyelure dybrow dark brown on my brow and eyelure dybrow black on my lashes.

I found the eyelure lash tint didn’t do anything but the brow tint did. Didn’t affect my eyes at all.

Found it very straight forward and effective.
Going to save me a lot of money now I don’t have to go to the salon.
