SPF for face - acne prone

User1511 · 04/03/2021 23:04

I am yet to find a suitable spf for my face. I have acne prone skin which depending on how it’s feeling, can be oily or dry 🤷🏻‍♀️ I have quite a pink tone and mild rosacea.

All the spf I’ve used in the past feels really greasy and makes me shiny.

Any recommendations?

For daily use I use Body Shop Vitamin E day lotion which is SPF30 and very light.
If I'm going to be out in the sun a lot, I find La Roche Posay Anthelios face sun cream (which is SPF 50) is pretty good.

Everley · 04/03/2021 23:19

I have similar skin to you and have recently tried Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen. It doesn’t make my skin shiny or greasy, I really like it so far.

MrsBotibolsCruise · 05/03/2021 13:15

Khiels ultra light UV defense mineral sunscreen. The price is toe-curling but it’s a lovely non-greasy formula. I’d love to sack it off and find something cheaper but I can’t. It’s the only one that doesn’t upset my reactive skin.

SummaLuvin · 05/03/2021 15:17

My recommendation is also expensive, but I haven't tried an SPF that is as weightless on non-greasy on the skin. Estée Lauder Perfectionist Pro Multi-Defense Aqua UV Gel SPF 50, £36 for 30ml.

TableNiner · 05/03/2021 19:52

@SummaLuvin Is it this? 20% discount at Boots at the moment

@TableNiner yes that’s it. Thanks for the heads up on the discount

Hi, I have similar skin and finally paid £££ to see a consultant dermatologist last month. She told me to use cleansing/moisture/spf products from the cerave brand from the pharmacy, or pay a bit more for skin ceuticals (the spf 30 not 50). She said this was the best for my skin type.

I wasn't 100% sure on the messaging though, because there was a big case of ONLY skinceuticals in the reception area for sale...

I have also successfully been using la Roche posay anthelios 50+ for years.

sugarlost · 05/03/2021 21:46

Revolution has one with spf30 that has good reviews ... normal to oily skin. I'm going to order it.

I normally use Nivea sun screen SPF 50 no shine.

I've also used Bioderma...it was ok.

User1511 · 05/03/2021 21:58

Thanks all!

Could be a pricey mistake it seems if it doesn’t agree with my skin! X

That's why I try not to spend too much on a product and also look up reviews before buying

TiddleTaddleTat · 05/03/2021 22:19

There's a la Roche posay one that's really good, and there's a mattifying tinted version. Anthelios, I think it's called?

bimbimbap · 06/03/2021 00:05

anthelios 50+ anti-imperfection is excellent - super matte and apparently stops scars turning pigmented in the sun. i wouldn’t bother with the tinted version just apply over your moisturiser then follow with norma makeup (if you wear any)

kingat · 06/03/2021 01:12

I have simillar skin and I like Eucerin Spf, garnier ultra light sensitive for face (5£) worth trying, canmake and paulas choice

4Minions2CallMyOwn · 06/03/2021 01:49

Hi. Can I please ask re SPF for the face does it matter what your skin tone is? I’m of Indian heritage so have brown skin. Do I need SPF please and if so would it just be a normal 30 one as previously discussed? Sorry I’m so clueless! Thank you

diddlediddle · 06/03/2021 07:28

I posted a thread similar to this a while ago and bought a few spfs inc biore watery essence, la roche pose spf for oily skin and frezyderm - all factor 50. I like them all for different reasons but so far the best is frezyderm. It's about £15 on Amazon, defo worth a try. They do a tinted and non tinted version.

RuggeryBuggery · 06/03/2021 07:42

I’d like to try the frezyderm spf50 one and was just looking on Amazon but noticed it says to reapply every 2 hours. Is this standard? I’m on roaccutane which makes my (already very fair) skin extra prone to burning to wondering if this is as good protection as some other brands

ginoclocksomewhere · 06/03/2021 07:44

I have crazy cystic acne and hormonal painful acne, I used Bondi Sands fragrance free face SPF50+, I've not found it to break me out, but I do set my face with face powder, even if I'm not wearing any other makeup 😂 (unless I'm on a day off, in which case I don't bother reducing the shine!).

ginoclocksomewhere · 06/03/2021 07:46

Forgot to add, it's only about £7 for 75ml on ASOS! (It's cheap, but it's Aussie which means it's passed their stricter SPF testing regs)

RealisticSketch · 06/03/2021 07:47

I love banana boat (any of their range that lists 'the sand can brush straight off' as a feature) as it is the only sunscreen I have tried that I can feel or see when it's on, so that heavy shiny feel is missing.

minniemoocher · 06/03/2021 07:51

For day to day I use L'Oréal moisturiser with factor 30. If going to be in the sun particularly I use Aldi sun screen in the pale cream bottle, it says ideal for face on it. I had acne pretty badly until 40, better now since I started using apricot scrub, or a coincidence

ServeTheServants · 06/03/2021 07:54

Heliocare 360 oil free gel is absolutely what you need. It is non greasy and factor 50. For some reason it’s £25 on Amazon at the moment, but normally it’s about £15. Brilliant stuff, I’ll never use anything else.

User1511 · 06/03/2021 08:05

Wow lots of great advice and products to try! Thanks ladies

Yes I would recommend Heliocare 360 too. My skin sounds similar to yours OP and I've had no problems with this product.
brookby · 06/03/2021 08:09

Heliocare 360 oil free gel is amazing, I have acne prone dark skin. Price fluctuates on amazon.

Treacletoots · 06/03/2021 08:16

I'm 40 something now and my skin will still find any excuse to break out. However I have currently got it under control. I highly recommend a Korean brand called COSRX which specialises in problem skin, using very effective ingredients like green tea, centella Asiatica, niacinamide and ceramides. It works to calm your skin, rather than 'attack' the spots which I've found is the best way to tackle it.

I've been using their Super Green Tea SPF 50 for a few months now and it is wonderful. My skin feels calm and moisturised but not shiny and does not cause breakouts. I also use Tretinoin to smooth wrinkles and it's essential to use a high SPF after this. (Also works miracles on spots too)

Also second the vote for cerave. Anything that protects your skin's natural barrier will work far better than anything designed to 'target' blemishes.
