I need new glasses and they all look hideous - can you help me online?!!?

DS broke mine over the weekend

I have had the same frames for years because I hate glasses shopping.

It's not like buying a top that you can change when you get bored or something - I have to wear them every day and they have to go with everything and not look freaky with my hair up etc.

Every pair I tried on today made me look like Dame Edna

HELP!

I was kind of relying on my mate to help, but she is busy and I need to buy them asap because these contacts are killing me.

How do I work out what suits me best (plus side is that I am in contacts so I can look for frames and see my face )??

Try this webpage simple but stylish frames
2 for 1 offer on as well.

lilacclaire · 05/11/2007 20:11

Here as well specsavers

lilacclaire · 05/11/2007 20:13

I wouldn't buy any without trying them on though. What is your face shape, hair etc.
I got a funky pair as my 2nd pair and thought they looked daft, but when I got used to them they were very flattering.

alarkaspree · 05/11/2007 20:27

Where did you go to look for them? When I bought my new glasses I got great advice from the staff in the opticians, I would not have even tried on the pair I got but I love them.

You definitely definitely can't buy without trying them on.

FlameFromBonfire · 05/11/2007 20:30

Ooh no, I wouldn't buy without trying - will swap my profile so you can see face shape.

It is that kind of advice I need - what shape etc.

My eyes are very close together I have discovered since wearing contacts!!!

Here's a website where you upload your photo and try on glasses virtually.

www.specsonthenet.com/index.jsp?ref=5960

I've tried to do it for myself, but it's best to look at your old frames for the size, if it still has it printed on the arm or elsewhere. It tells you the lens width, width between the eyes and the length of the arms, eg: 50-16-140. then go online and buy some specs. The American companies seem to be a lot cheaper than the UK ones.

I buy mine from here

Prices start from $8, inclusive of lenses.
I've bought five pairs from this place, at this price you can try all different styles and colours.

I always need to go for the antireflection ($4.95) coating and thinner lenses ($17), as my prescription strength is strong at -5.5, but they still work out cheap. Postage is $9 to the UK, irrespective of how many pairs you order.

It's fun to have a look anyway!

Great photos!

I think both Specsavers and Dolland and Aitchison offer a "photo" service where you can try on a frame and then get a photo on a PC and check what you look like. (I don't think I explained that very well!).

I have to wear glasses all the time and have just replaced mine. I've got half rimless ones which are fab and aren't too "in yer face" which some of the full framed ones are. I think the staff in the opticians should be able to help you choose either colour of frame and style. I know how difficult it can be choosing - I must have tried on a dozen or so frames and kept asking DH which ones he liked! Eventually I got the ones I really liked and guess what - noone has noticed I've got new specs! Hey Ho!
Good luck with your search!

ok the first thing to do is look at your eyes. do they slant up or down? glasses must do likewise. i suspect they slant down and you are trying up glasses, hence dame edna styling.

then consider your eyebrows. the frame should not be fighting with them. how deep the glasses are depends on your preferences. i like below eyebrow but above eyelid, so not as narrow as the fashion currently is but not deidre barlow specials either.

do you have a fringe? are your features large or small? this will help you to choose how heavy or light to go.

width, again consider your eyebrows, eye shape and general propotions. colour - what suits you best, gold or silver?

i've got a very dipped in bridge of nose and high cheekbones so have to be careful that glasses don't sit on my face rather than be supported on nose. you might have your own issue so think about that too. its really about eliminating and see what you're left with.

or you can bottle it and have rimless but will still have to think about shape.

Smithy · 05/11/2007 21:09

Oh just realised, pic of me in new specs on profile (the last pic!).

fishie · 05/11/2007 21:11

ooh sorry didn't see you had pics (squabbling with dp)

you def have down slanting eyes, as do your very nice children. those round glasses are pointing up.

fishie · 05/11/2007 21:15

flame your old glasses are too far down your face, covering cheekbones. they are also too round for your straightish eyebrows. the width is good.

fishie · 05/11/2007 21:16

smithy top of class, your glasses are super.

JackieNo · 05/11/2007 21:18

One of the opticians (might be David Clulow) do a thing where you can choose 3 frames, and (for a fee) take them home for a few days, so you can show them to people and get their opinions. Might be worth a try. I need to get some new glasses too, but keep bottling out.

FlameFromBonfire · 05/11/2007 22:03

You're all great - oodles to think about.

Smithy - Wubbzy pumpkin?!?! My DD would be in heaven

DS2 is a complete fan of Wow Wow Wubbzy. I've now promised him a Wubbzy birthday cake - what HAVE I let myself in for. Will post a pic on profile if/when I get round to it (birthday party this Saturday - help!)

FlameFromBonfire · 06/11/2007 07:45

Sounds great

Wow ! Bow down to your pumpkin skills...

DS1 would love a wubbzy pumpkin. He loves the song "don't lie" but sings "you're bi. you're bi. Don't ypu play with another guy"

FlameFromBonfire · 06/11/2007 16:21

Argh!

I can't decide - I have narrowed it down to 4... two on the specsavers site that look freakish in photos, and 2 not online... and my bloody phone won't transfer the photos to pc

I must make this decision alone!

I think that picking glasses at the moment is not as difficult as a few years ago as you can get away with some quite quirky frames at the moment.

Maybe not this quirky though
