I've just started getting a book, is there anything that's worth buying?

I like the pillow mist spray and the glimmerstick eyeliner.

Deathraystare · 01/03/2021 15:46

Deffo Glimmerstick eyeliner. If you want to get rid of the shinies/oilies there is a tube of stuff by Mark (part of Avon) in a pink tube . I was impressed when a colleague (who normally has a very shiny forehead and nose) wore it. I actually have a book near me but I am working! I may come back to you with the name if you want it.

nobabiesyet · 01/03/2021 15:49

Handsoaps are nice, pillow spray, handcreams are cheap and pretty good coco one particularly (if you use lots like most of us it is handy to have a few), lipstick is surprisingly good.

rawalpindithelabrador · 01/03/2021 15:52

The perfumes are good.

Deathraystare · 01/03/2021 16:01

Ok It is not mark but is the normal Avon - Shine and oil control primer. Obvs only good for oily/combination skin. It is £6 down from £8 at the moment.

Glimmerstick comes in eyeliner, brow and lipliner. My absolute favourite is the black/brown eye liner.

I personally do not recommend most of the perfumes. Very samey, except Timeless. Such a shame, in the 70's they had some lovely original perfumes.

picklemewalnuts · 01/03/2021 16:04

Their website is useless. Nothing on it.

I like the eyeliners.

YouokHun · 01/03/2021 23:47

Loathe Avon now it’s an exploitative MLM.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 02/03/2021 00:11

I like the jeanetic clothing range. It's very comfortable jeans. It's not on their website at the moment.

I'm not a fan of the comfort bras (currently only bras on their website) because despite being comfy they give no support. I use them as sleep bras. I have a great lounge bra from them but it's no longer available on their website. I've had some great fitting bras from them but they aren't on website.

I've had some lovely pajamas in the past from them and a few nice throws. Bags have been a bit hit and miss. Some of the cheaper bags were terrible, others were surprisingly good value. The expensive bags have almost all been good.

They had a great long lasting lip tint pen range that is very long lasting but it's not on the website at the moment.

The eye liners are good. I like the eyeshadow quads. Gel shine nail polish is very good.

picklemewalnuts · 02/03/2021 08:36

Has Avon changed its model, @YouokHun ? It was always like that, I thought.

YouokHun · 02/03/2021 09:54

It used to be direct selling and sellers used to have a territory. Impossible to make a living wage but fairer. I can’t remember when it became MLM.

Now anyone can sign up anywhere so you could find one street with 10 people all desperately trying to sell. You can now build a team and the bigger the team the better (that’s the only way to make money). FB and Ebay is choc full of product people have saddled themselves with. It’s very damaging to people who often can’t afford to lose money.

Avon is owned by Natura who also own Body Shop at Home which is another shitty exploitative MLM!

picklemewalnuts · 02/03/2021 11:11

Ah, ok.
I used to do body shop, right at the beginning when it started. We didn't have territories, but each shop had a cap on how many people could work from there which was a sensible limit. There was also no benefit to a team leader in recruiting and training someone, only in the sales they did. There was no incentive to get them to 'buy in', only to encourage them to sell enough for them to make a party worth doing.

nobabiesyet · 02/03/2021 11:15

I've been getting Avon from a lady in my village for the past 2 years. No hard sell. Just a message every so often - do you want a book - like a mini catalogue, you order and it's dropped off. It was the same in the village previously. No body has ever tried to recruit me. Each book has offers, but you order only what you want. I quite often say I'm fine this month. It seems worlds away from MLM. Stuff is good value and I don;t think it is like a MLM at all.

YouokHun · 02/03/2021 12:29

@nobabiesyet yes it can be hard to equate Avon with Amway or any other famously nasty MLM but the conduct of the individual rep to you the customer isn’t a good measure of what’s really going on. There are a lot of people who sell a bit and treat it like a hobby and it doesn’t matter too much about making a profit, but there are many more being tricked into it, especially at the moment, and being told it’s a viable earner. They’re told that they can earn £350+ a month which is actually really hard to do on product sales without recruiting. I’m seeing a lot of women, usually the ones who can least afford to lose money, getting into difficulty doing something they were told would rescue the family finances. Avon isn’t the worst by any means but it’s still problematic.

@picklemewalnuts yes, BSAH has also mutated into something really concerning. If you look at FB marketplace and selling pages and ebay you’ll see how much MLM product is being offloaded. This is indicative of the rep being their own best customer. Last week there were 22,000 BSAH auctions on U.K. eBay.

It’s an exploitative business model that targets women and exploits the difficulties of balancing employment and childcare and exploits women’s social networks under the guise of “female empowerment”. Sorry, I don’t want to hijack the thread Blush so I’ll leave this here which, though written a few years ago does explain the problem of MLM

The Glimmerstick eyeliners are truly excellent, the best I’ve ever found. They beat my Marc Jacobs ones into a cocked hat.

Deathraystare · 03/03/2021 08:38

I have bought some decent bras from them in the past.

Orangesandlemons82 · 03/03/2021 08:44

The Lisa Armstrong primer/moisturiser is good. It's quite similar to the one I got from Bobbi brown

Lupinhere37 · 03/03/2021 22:57

Glimmerstick eyeliners
Argan oil hair range - it is excellent
Hand washes
Currently using their hand sanitizer as well
Good variety of hand creams - the cocoa butter is great for winter dry skin

OddshoesOddsocks · 03/03/2021 23:20

We love the avocado range in our house, it’s brilliant for dd and dps sensitive eczema-prone skin.

There’s a 5 for £5 on at the moment so some bargains to be had there!
