How often do you apply suncream daily?

wiltingflower · 28/02/2021 15:06

I normally put some on before work so I'm covered during my commute but I work in a place with lots of windows and should up my applications when WFH stops.

How do you normally manage suncream reapplications, what do you do when you're wearing make up as well? Do you remove your make up or just leave it? And sunglasses, are you wearing them in all weather conditions and not just when sunny?

Unless you're working outside I wouldn't bother.

I don't know anyone who does this, even my very fair-skinned friends.

FleetwoodRaincoat · 28/02/2021 15:10

Also, you need to get sunlight on your skin to make Vitamin D.

MangoFeverDream · 28/02/2021 15:14

I just apply over makeup at the end of the workday. I’ve not found it to be much trouble tbh. I do wash off when home. Sunglasses always tho

happymummy12345 · 28/02/2021 15:15

It depends on the temperature. I'm extremely sun intolerant so when it's sunny and 15 degrees or above, if I'm going to be in the sun for longer than 5-10 minutes I have to put some on otherwise I will start going red.
I never wear any makeup so that makes no difference to me

happymummy12345 · 28/02/2021 15:16

Never ever wear sunglasses though as I feel silly in them

QueenPaw · 28/02/2021 15:49

I don't tend to reapply because after my lunch at work I'm then inside with no windows and it's dark when I leave!
If I'm out and about and need the SPF then tend to not wear makeup so I can reapply
And yes, I wear it every day. I'm vitamin d deficient so on a supplement for that anyway

Girlintheframe · 28/02/2021 16:39

I apply twice a day. Once in the morning then again at lunch but I don't wear make up to work.
A dermatologist I follow on you tube says you should reapply every 2 hours. She uses a mineral powder one.

wiltingflower · 28/02/2021 17:52

A range of answers! Thank you everyone, I imagine we're all following different skincare regimens and have different habits.

I take vitamins daily too including vitamin d so not worried about not getting enough of this in.

I normally wear a powder to control oil on my face and am not sure how suncream will work with this. I'll see how reapplying works in a week or so!

@girlintheframe do you know the name of the dermatologist? Love to see what they recommend.

I was used to wearing sunglasses on my commutes and sometimes when exercising, going for walks etc but not always. Need to get back into this.

I'm interested that the dermatologist said every 2 hours- for some reason I assumed it was much shorter than that and followed a pattern with SPF, e.g. reapply every 20 minutes with SPF 20 or every 50 minutes with SPF 50!

It's Dr Vanita Rattan. She is a formulator not a dermatologist! My mistake but she seems pretty informed and constantly preaches about sunscreen. I think it's Dermacare she uses but not sure.

I use a 8 hour sunscreen on my face and neck, apply it in the morning, let it sink in for at least 20 minutes, and then apply my bb cream and some clear face powder as it can make my face a bit shiny. I reapply it after lunch if I'm not wearing make up and am outside all day in the sun, if I'm wearing make up then I use a SPF facial "mist" to top it up if needed (I cover my eyes though!). At the moment I'm just applying the 8 hour cream once in the morning, I need to buy some more of the misty stuff. I wear sunglasses if it's sunny.

Wearing sunglasses is as important as wearing sunscreen @happymummy12345. No-one looks silly in sunglasses in sunny weather. Long-term exposure to UV rays can damage the eye’s surface and increases the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.

I don't understand why you wouldn't protect your eyes. You only get one set of eyes.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 01/03/2021 08:26

I use p20, which is one application for the whole day. So much easier.

ginandwineandbaileys · 01/03/2021 10:43

I use Ultrasun, it only needs to be applied once a day. I wear sunglasses if there is any sun.

Tehmina23 · 01/03/2021 11:08

I use a day cream containing spf15 on normal days when I'm not outdoors for more than half an hour or if it's winter. I don't reapply that.
But in the summer if I'm out for longer than half an hour I wear an actual facial sun lotion, usually Boots No7, & reapply approx 2 hourly I think. I was using spf30 but this summer have decided to try spf50.

I've followed this regime since I was about 19 & now I'm 44 my skin is still young looking. I don't use sunbeds either.

I always use my prescription polarised sunglasses on sunny days outside as I've got photosensitive epilepsy so im uncomfortable in bright sunlight.

happymummy12345 · 01/03/2021 11:35

@RampantIvy I think it's because of what happened when I was younger. I had to wear glasses from when I was a year old and was constantly teased and called names growing up. So much so when I was 14 I simply refused to go back to the opticians for my next appointment, and haven't been back since (I'm 28 a month today so that's 14 years ago). I haven't worn any kind of glasses ever since and swore I never will unless it's literally my only option (to me sunglasses are not essential or necessary, people can and do manage without them). So that's why I don't wear them.

PeacheyPeach · 01/03/2021 12:03

Can i jump on this post xx in the summer i always wear suncream on my face, never been big on the skincare routine until now. So would i still apply my moisturiser that already has an added spf as well. Cant help.thinking my face is going to end up so greasy!! Especislly when im sunbathing!!

RuthW · 01/03/2021 12:06

Everyday even in winter under my make up.

On arms, legs, neck etc only when it's hot and I'm outside so about once a year.

flakymate · 01/03/2021 12:22

Why does the face need to be the avenue for vitamin d production though? Your face is too important to risk sun damage for the sake of vitamin d, as this can be taken in via your body instead or easily supplemented. Most Brits need to take supplements as we can’t produce enough vitamin d in this country regardless of sunscreen usage.
flakymate · 01/03/2021 12:26

I apply sunscreen daily - regardless of weather or time of day. I use Kiehl’s (SPF 50). I base the rest of my skincare/makeup around sunscreen so my face isn’t overloaded with product Eg no heavy serums AM

I recently bought a face mist from Clarins which is an on the go SPF 50 spritz to top up whilst out. It’s okay - I guess I was expecting a setting spray mist, but it’s literally a squirt of white sunscreen blotches so not very discreet!

At the risk of sounding like your mother, please can I urge you to take your eye care more seriously. If you haven't set foot in an optician's for 14 years you really need to book an eye test. Opticians don't just test your eyesight, but they check the health of your eye.

Everyone, regardless of whether they wear glasses/contact lenses should get their eyes tested every two years

I wear sunglasses everyday, even when it's overcast. It's out of habit and I don't like strong light in my eyes either.

SPF is in my tinted moisturiser that I wear if I'm leaving the house. In summer I swear full on sunscreen SPF30 on my face everyday.

TruffleShuffles · 01/03/2021 15:08

I use and spf50 lotion in the morning and at the moment I top up around lunch time. I use the la Roche posay anthelios spf50 spray during the day, it’s a really fine invisible mist so goes on great over makeup and it feels really refreshing in warmer weather.

Before the invention of sunglasses people commonly wore wide brimmed hats to shade their eyes.
Perhaps you could (or already are) do that?

Delatron · 01/03/2021 16:34

I use spf 50 i the morning. Then reapply if I’m off outside again in the afternoon. Don’t wear foundation so just gets shoved on.
UVA rays are the same strength all year round and these are the ageing ones.

For vitamin D I would never sacrifice my face!
From April-Sept I would get arms and legs out with no cream for at least 30 mins when possible/
Supplement in winter.
