Semi or permanent for hiding greys?

I have very dark brown hair and starting to get quite a few greys around my temples. What’s the best way to tackle them at home. I’m thinking semi permanent is less risky?

I would personally just stick a permanent on in a shade slightly lighter than you think you want. I did a DIY root shadow with a dark brown permanent a couple of weeks ago and it came out basically black. Had to wash it a million times with bicarbonate of soda and anti-dandruff shampoo to get it to something less shocking. But now, unlike every salon toner or semi I've had on my hair, the colour is solid and not fading and giving me orange roots by the third wash.

I guess it depends though - if you're covering grey then you'll have to mess around with the regrowth every few weeks anyway, so longevity might not matter as much as it did to me.

Also, I play fast and lose with my hair and am probably not a sensible voice.

Semi never really works for grey, unfortunately.

I also have dark brown hair, with quite a lot of grey where my parting is....annoyingly. I have had a

reaction to permanent dye in the salon where loads of hair fell out Confused Although my hairdresser insisted it was nothing to do with the dye, but I know it was. So I'm now a bit stuck.

But yes, for greys, don't bother with a semi.

I have been using a semi permanent for years and it works really well. I use L’Oréal casting creme gloss in a colour very similar to my natural colour which I really like and even hair dressers have complimented it.
However as I’ve got more greys I have to do it every 3-4 weeks (have dark hair).
Also I recently decided to go for a lighter shade so I bought one in my usual brand and it has done nothing, not even coloured the greys so in this scenario I think I will have to try out a permanent.

I do actually use the clairol root touch up as well - that’s permanent and works really well. You can just use it on your temples and parting. Great product!

Thank you all - will look into the brands you mention. Is it better to wait to be able to go to a salon do you think or not worth it?

I used John Freida precision foam for years with no problems. I tried the e-salon custom colour which firstly didn't cover greys and secondly made a lot of my hair snap off. So I've gone back to John Freida foam colour and would definitely recommend.

The brands I mention are pretty low risk so you could always give it a go at home while salons are still closed.
As PP said - go lighter than you think you need as they are always darker than you expect, I have made that mistake before and ended up with very black hair which looked terrible on me.

I would also agree with going at least one shade lighter (and in my experience one shade cooler) than you expect. Otherwise I end up with very dark, quite red toned hair.

I have been using Nice & Easy semi permanent for over 20 years now - I'm over 60 now - and still works a treat for me.

As others have suggested, I use a light brown shade but am naturally more medium brown and I use a root touch up spray - cheap one from Home Bargains/B & M which works just as well as the L'Oreal one - when greys start showing in my parting.

Go for clariol root touch up, it’s excellent. I’m dark brunette but use the mid brown, it blends in with natural colour perfectly and v shiny, people always comment on the shine. But go lighter!!

Wow root cover up is a powder you paint on and is very good and lasts for ages.
