snowman212 · 27/02/2021 20:19

Skin on my knuckles cracking due to frequent wash. Any recommendations for mild and inexpensive hand wash?
Thanks

Not a handwash as such but much better for the environment: Body shop coconut solid bar soap. Lovely gentle moisturising soap.

Thanks. Do you mean it's better for the environment as it doesn't come with a plastic bottle?

Yes! A minor victory in the war against the plastic bottle. I keep meaning to switch to a more ethical I producer, but that coconut soap is too nice. DD said it really made a difference to her when she was hand sanitizing constantly in school.

Try udderly smooth cream (Amazon) for healing the cracked knuckles. Worked like an absolute dream for me. Mine were bleeding and soooooo sore (pre-Covid!)

SqeakyHindge · 27/02/2021 20:56

Any suggestions what young child can use when goes back to school instead of their anti bac stuff?

We had to go back to bars of soap at home & has been using e45 cream after. Sons hands are almost better

peanutbutterjimjams · 27/02/2021 20:57

Any bar soap is waaaay gentler on hands than liquid.

SlumdogMummy · 27/02/2021 20:59

I have eczema and my hands were so painful in the first lockdown. My Dr recommended that I use baby wash, I've been using Dove sensitive baby wash which comes in a pump so easy to use as a soap.

snowman212 · 27/02/2021 21:03

Thank you all for very helpful suggestions. Yes, I probably should switch to bar soaps, have I become too lazy to use them? Liquid soap seems quicker.

Does it kill germs effectively, I wonder ...

Handwashing is meant to take 2 happy birthdays whether you use bar or liquid soap. The time picking up the bar should be ok.😜😏🤣

Handwashing isnt really about killing germs, it's about making sure your hands are slippery enough and washed well enough that the germs end up down the sink. Anythinv slippery will do that (although I'd always advocate for a solid soap variety)

lookdeepintotheparka · 28/02/2021 09:51

We've switched to bar soap and had no more problems with dry hands despite all the extra hand washing. I love Nesti Dante soap!

If you prefer a hand wash I'd recommend either Child's Farm which is really gentle Smile

citygirl1961 · 28/02/2021 11:21

I've always thought bar soap was too drying for eczema. That's what I have and always avoid it.

Oh with a toddler I don't always do 2 happy birthdays 🙈

Simple do a handwash and a bar soap. I like Pears sensitive (blue bar) and their standard handwash is also ok for my sensitive hands.

Thanks, I think I'll get back to doing that. I didn't realise liquid soap makes skin drier

Try a soap substitute such as Dermol 500 (over the counter) .

MuddleMoo · 02/03/2021 07:45

Have you tried the dove handwash?

Yes, just switched to that recently. Think it is actually milder

Got one. Should try it. So you don't use water with it?

Handwash is a lot more drying than soap. I find the savon de marseille handwash from TK Max a bit less harsh. Bar soap is fine.

hollyhope · 02/03/2021 17:32

Yes, use water with it if using as a soap substitute: it won't lather like soap or handwash.
And dry hands gently.

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/03/2021 19:53

Aqueous cream? Very cheap.

MotherofPearl · 02/03/2021 19:58

Waitrose do a lovely unscented glycerine bar soap. It's very gentle, and doesn't seem to irritate my DC's skin (two of them are eczema sufferers). It's very inexpensive.

Gentle hand wash

Thanks, don't have a Waitrose near me, but when I see one, I'll get them to try
