I have lockdown hair. I have noticeable grey roots and I look old. Normally I have my hair dyed in a salon with a semi permanent dye but as I'm facing a 6 week wait minimum to get a hair appointment, I thought I should try hair dye DIY. I have never dyed my hair before myself and neither has anyone else in my household. We are all clueless.

On impulse, earlier today I bought a packet of L'Oréal casting creme gloss. I have a teen who is prepared to help out. But I'm scared I'm going to end up with dye all over my face, stained clothes and stripey hair. Please give me your best tips for not ending up like a dog's dinner.

Wear an old top or t-shirt rather than trying to keep a towel round your shoulders. Use baby wipes or a damp cloth to wipe dye from your forehead, ears, arms, wherever else you get it on. I used to put towels on the floor to prevent drips from staining it

Moisturiser as close to your hairline as possible. It acts as a barrier.
Towel on the floor to stand on in case of any drips.

It's honestly very easy.
Top tips:
-buy an cheap dye applicator brush from superdrug or boots
-get dye lighter than you think you need. Eg. My hair is quite dark brown but I use light or medium brown dye
-Wear an old t shirt or something you don't mind getting stained
-dab of moisturiser or baseline on forehead

  • do it on dry, unwashed hair
-get your daughter to help you to brush the dye onto your roots section by section. Work your way round making lots of parting. Don't apply further than roots. -leave on for longer than box says. I leave it for 40 mins -5 mins before time is up, work it through to the ends
  • rinse well and apply the conditioner that comes with it.

It's not hard once you get the hang of it. I did mine this morning.

Should have added that I use an old bowl rather than applying from the bottle. I mix it in the bottle, then squeeze it into the bowl, then apply with the brush.

I’ve bought the Clairoil root touch up in as near to my normal colour as possible
Brush on roots - Vaseline to stop staining on skin
10 minutes then comb through to blend and leave for another 5 minutes
DD did mine last night - very pleased with results - did same in previous lockdowns

Just wanted to say a belated thanks for your comments. My hair is now dyed! It looks great. Dd (as hair-dyer-in-cheif) is very pleased with herself, rightfully so. It took longer than I thought it would, but was quite straightforward. I think it looks as good as it does when I have it done at the salon, but cost very much less.
