Moisturiser - cerave?

I know it's been done before, but any ideas welcomed!

I need a facial moisturiser. I don't want something with SPF as I use a separate F50, and I want something I can use morning and evening. 50, perimenopausal, quite dry skin that can get fussy and produce the odd spot. Low budget!

I tried Nivea blue, worked pretty well but it's so thick and I hate the draggy feel applying it. I like the garnier rose one. I tried boots vitamin c moisturiser and that seems to make my skin very dry, I had to top up with oil. I used to use Liz Earle and like that, I could go back if I can't find an alternative. Having been massively brand loyal for years I'm the total opposite now and keep changing it up.

I've been wondering about cerave which people seem to love, but most of it seems to be for face or body and that puts me off.

Any recommendations? TIA.

I use Nivea soft in the white pot and love it. It does say for face and body on the pot but I only ever use it on my face (only noticed it said both a few years ago after using it since my teens) Couldn't you save the blue Nivea just for night if it's the thickness that bothers you?

Astral is a firm favourite on the retro products thread. Aldi Q10 and Caviar always seem to get a mention and are definitely low budget. Cerave seems popular too and the face/body thing wouldn't put me off.

I haven't used the same moisturiser for day and night since I bought my first pot of night cream aged 23 though Grin I stick with the same day moisturiser and switch between night ones.

I read somewhere that it doesn't matter what moisturiser you use (assuming your skin likes it) it's the serums or whatever that really make the difference. Could all be bollocks of course!

I’ve heard good things about their eye cream! I’m a blue pot Nivea die-hard personally!

FreshFaceTime · 25/02/2021 18:02

Yes I've heard good things about the eye cream too!

Watching with interest - I bought the Cerave cream but found it way too thick and it gave me zits. I’m wondering if the lotion would be better.

Before now I was using Embryolisse and really liked it but I can’t seem to just pick it up in my local Boots anymore - I have to order it online. I’m looking for something I know will always be there if I pop into Boots.

GrimDamnFanjo · 25/02/2021 18:39

Cerave all the way, or look for something that contains similar actives which actually do something for your skin.

Corkina · 25/02/2021 18:41

I've just ordered the Embroylisse Sensitive, very interested to see how I will get on. I found cerave a bit thick also. Big fan of Avene though and use the aqua gel at night. Love it

Girlintheframe · 25/02/2021 19:01

I tried the cerave cream and hoped to love it but I found it greasy.
I have mainly dry skin but my chin/nose does get congested. I couldn't have imagined putting make up on top.
See if you can get some samples? Feel unique let you order 5 samples for free. You just pay for the postage.

@Girlintheframe brilliant suggestion, thank you! I think I'm feeling the lack of going and browsing round shops. I don't like the sound of greasy and contesting, I have huge pores for it to sit in!

I could try Astral, @FreshFaceTime.

I was using serums (possibly, gloopy things in bottles), alternate nights retinoid and I think glycolic acid, but I stripped everything back to basics when I got a red patch under one eye. It's not gone yet so I don't think it is reacting to anything, so I could start those again.

Thank you all.

I use the CeraVe lotion and really like it.

I find nivea and astral too scented and greasy for my face (especially astral, which made me gag!) the CeraVe is lovely - unscented, fairly light and sinks in nicely.

millymoo1202 · 25/02/2021 20:44

I’ve tried my daughters cerave and I’m 50 soon, I really like the eye cream but for me both the day and night cream wasn’t moisturising enough. I really like Liz Earle super skin but don’t like the new formulation in their basic moisturisers

FreeButtonBee · 26/02/2021 15:35

LRP tolerant ultra nuit - simple, not too thick, okay value particularly with a boots 3 for 2. I've even got my husband using it. That said i do like to layer the humectant serums under it so I don't need tons of moisture on top. But with a simple hydrating serum under it it should be perfect. SPF goes on top without any issues too (and I use SPF 50)

mathanxiety · 26/02/2021 21:40

I've been using cerave morning and evening for a while and I like it. It feels light, doesn't leave a greasy slick, doesn't make me break out.

savvy7 · 26/02/2021 21:54

I have the Garnier Rose one and much prefer it to Cerave which I tried previous to.that. There is a superdrug vitamin e cream which I found to be better than Cerave but the Garnier wins out for me.

Camelliawatch · 26/02/2021 21:56

Cerave thin lotion day

Cetaphil cream in a tube for night

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 26/02/2021 22:51

I had a massive reaction to Cerave. It was fine when I put it on, but my face did feel a bit tingly. About half an an hour later DP asked if I was hot, and said my face was a bit flushed - he was being very kind, I looked like I had been burned. I’m using it as hand team now. (I was fine after a cleanse, an anti-histamine, and going to bed with Sudocrem on!)

I've been using the CeraVe Facial Moisturising lotion for a few months now, and have been very happy with it. I was previously a die hard Decleor fan, but since developing eczema on my face, have had to switch to plainer stuff. I also rate La Roche Posay, which I think is pitched at a similar price. I actually feel I've been wasting money for years on more expensive products!

BobbitWormNightmares · 27/02/2021 18:27

The ordinary moisterizer is great. Very cheap and minimal ingredients. I have just ordered cerave am moisterizer with SPF - to give me some every day protection. Hope I get on okay with it.
