Hair laser removal that doesn't hurt??

Does it even exist?! I had laser hair removal about ten years ago and stopped half way through treatment as it was so painful! I remember it was like a lit cigarette being dragged across my skin. I'm hoping the new treatments might have got easier and less painful over the years? Xxx

I have had 3 sessions since September, interrupted because of Covid, and I find it really painful. The reading I had done before suggested it was less painful than waxing but takes longer, many times the comparing to being flicked with an elastic band, that has not been my experience. For me at the worst places where hair is thickest it’s like a red hot needle being inserted in the hair follicle.

The lady who has done my sessions picked up on my obvious discomfort during the second session where the intensity was increased and chose to bring the setting back down to make it more manageable, she also made a note and kept that setting for my third session. So this is something you can ask for. I also took pain killers before my third session on her suggestion. I tell myself it’s 15 minutes of pain every 6 weeks, and my results have been fantastic. I don’t know if it hurts me so much because my skin is so pale and hair so dark.

Sorry it’s not better news OP.

I have been doing laser with the Soprano Platinum system. It's uncomfortable rather than painful if you do the Hollywood area, but with other areas it's totally bearable, and I'm the biggest chicken in the world when it comes to pain....

TBH, you can buy your own hair removal device for home - costs the same as a couple of treatments. In the first lockdown, I bought myself one and it's one of the best things I've ever bought! I do my bikini line (which has pretty much gone now) - legs, armpits, tache - same, the growth is miniscule. I am half eastern european and pretty dark haired, so I was surprised it actually worked. You could maybe look into buying one - they don't hurt - they just sometimes get a bit warm. Have a look on currentbody.com. I bought this one and it's marvellous! www.currentbody.com/products/smoothskin-bare-ipl-hair-removal-device-black-and-rose-gold

I have laser and whilst it does hurt, the pain is manageable. My clinic now use lasers where they have to apply a gel to your skin before they laser you and this hurts much less than the ones that that don't.

Thanks ladies. I'm wondering if the bikini line is the worst bit? As that's what I had ten years ago. The bit I want done now is the thighs, as I've developed these long black hairs on the backs of them just above the knee 🤮 (ain't growing old great?). So maybe thighs won't be as painful?

You can request anaesthesia cream if you have it done in a clinic (I used to use sk:n, years ago, and had the cream then). It can be painful. I use a Lumea now, which is also v painful on the bikini line, though fine elsewhere.

CircusMistress · 28/02/2021 08:00

Silly question maybe but does the hair removal eventually become permanent, even with the home lasers?

sanfranfibber · 28/02/2021 08:01

I use a lumea and doesn't hurt at all?

mercimacherie · 28/02/2021 11:52

@CircusMistress

I bought a Lumea when they first came out in 2010 and used it until I was completely hair free (within 6 months). I then used it now and then over the next couple of years then not at all and stayed hair free.

In the last year I've been getting random dark hairs on my legs and underarms and my bikini area had grown back so I bought the new version and I'm using it again.

If I'd continued to use mine maybe once a month (possibly less) I think I would have stayed completely hair free. I don't find it painful at all, even on the highest setting.

CircusMistress · 01/03/2021 20:57

Thanks mercimacherie I think I might give it a go.

bookworm1982 · 03/03/2021 07:27

Thanks ladies. Would you all agree that it hurts less on thighs and legs then? And the bikini area is the most painful? X

Sounds about right, OP, but even then it's still manageable. I wouldn't bother with a Lumea personally as they don't penetrate the hair shaft for long term hair removal. A good clinic should offer a patch test before you sign up. Mine did a patch test on every area that I wanted to treat and you can guage the pain threshold from that.
