Naturally dark brown hair with a balayage. Lots of grey - can I cover it at home?

Hi,

So over the past couple of years, I've gone from a few scattered greys, that I could easily ignore, to a very noticeable amount, that against my natural dark hair, looks very harsh and a bit witchy.

I had a balayage last summer, which I would ideally like topping up (when the doors re open!) but at the same time, I'm desperate to cover these greys, but they're too long to just do a root touch up, so I think I'd have to cover all my hair. Is that right?

I'm pretty sure everyone will tell me to wait until the hairdressers re open, but I'm feeling really crappy about myself recently (have another thread running about my jowls 🥺) so could really do with a pick me up tbh.

Any ideas?

Thanks 😊

I’ve been doing it myself over lockdown. Get a proper hair dye brush (like this: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0077L6K7W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_XY6SFFWJB7DN09BMKZZW?psc=1)&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21 and a lighter brown than you thank you need. Do the roots section by section, leave for about 15 mins, then add colour to some sections (I just grab random chunks and brush the colour along it) and leave for another five minutes. Wash. Done.

Disclaimer: I am not a hairdresser, but it’s working for me!

I’m in the same situation and am doing this using Clairol Root Touch Up dye kit. Agree with TheJackieWeaver that you need a lighter shade than you think. I chose the medium brown and it’s still a bit darker than I expected. It’s way better than the greys though. I normally have my roots coloured at the salon every four weeks and have been doing the same thing at home. I did through the last lockdown too and it did no harm even though my efforts are pretty amateurish.
