Does anybody else not wear a bra most of the time?

I find that I just can't find a bra that fits right, and when I do find one, it will only fit for 1 week of the month, I just cant afford £20+ a time for a different size bra dependant on my cycle. And if I wear a bra for a whole day it hurts by the end of the day. Also I am not a small person, Im a 44E so going braless in public is not something I would normally do as I tend to swing a lot (having a jaunty walk is something to be done only if there are no males driving cars on nearby roads), and with nipples the size of scammel wheel nuts cold weather makes for a 'pointed' conversation with people. I would like to be a bit more in control, and look as if I have taken a bit of care over my dressing, but the ache just doesn't make a bra worth it.

I do identify with the OP though. It's conceivable that I didn't wear a bra for the whole of yesterday (baggy fleece over the top).

Am seven weeks pregnant and already through my smallest nursing bra from last time. (36E). 20 quid a shot.

Last time I gloried in a 34K when I was feeding ds1. And I didn't wear a bra much then either.

If you feel more comfortable without a bra than with one, then don't wear one. If you feel uncomfortable either way, then it might be worth getting measured by an expert and then spending an hour or so trying on bras in some or other big department store's underwear department.

I very rarely wear a bra and I am about 38C. I don't much like bras, find them uncomfortable, and am old enough to have a streak of feminist unease about the idea that my norks have to be strapped down because of other people's delicate sensibilities.
I have found that it's more comfortable to wear a stretchy 'medium' sports 'bra' off the market, for instance, when I'm morris dancing or doing anything else that involves a lot of jumping, particularly in the couple of days before I get my AF, but the rest of the time I don't bother cos I don;t see why I should.

OMGHelp, I am in Worcester. Beatties (House of Fraser) stock Freya and Fantasie and the ladies are v helpful and nice

Piffle · 05/11/2007 22:09

I dream of going braless...
but it would pose a risk to the public I fear

Upsidedowncake · 05/11/2007 22:21

I have to say that I don't run for any buses when I'm hanging loose ...

OMGhelp · 05/11/2007 23:07

Im really going there (M&S) to try on a lot of bra's to find what does fit.
Im a 43 inch rib cage and a 51 around the boobs, which can go up depending on the time of the month, if that helps.

I also don't do the running bit, even coming down stairs I hold my tits. If I ran I would probably end up with black eyes.

Am quite blessed in the nork dept. and often go braless, mostly at home.
If I go out braless, I keep my coat on!

I was just saying to DH at the weekend, I hope you don't expect me to have any boobs left by the time I reach 40.

He replied something along the lines of:
'Hmm... Great'

jamila169 · 06/11/2007 00:44

OMGhelp -you are either a 44 gg or a 46g as a starting point - Wouldn't bother with M+S I doubt very much if they'd have anything to fit you- the big stores like kendals, john lewis etc usually have excellent fitters as well as bravissimo

OMGhelp · 06/11/2007 08:41

44gg or 46g Arrrggghhh! runs away screaming. Hubby will be delighted.. I will try figleaves because of their returns policy to get me started, and when DD wants to go Xmas shopping somewhere beside Hereford I will go somewhere that has a John Lewis etc. Probably Birmingham.

Ooops. Thanks Jamila, I had the calculator in front of me but I didn't want to believe it, having someone else put it in words helps with the usual feeling of 'I can't be THAT big'. Oh for the days when I was a 36d.

I just used the m + s bra sizer on line.

I am a 34E,

it told me I was a 38 d

lol.

Piratechnic · 06/11/2007 11:21

and on another site, I am now a 38 A.

Ok my actual breast would fit in the cup, becuase the bigger the band the larger the cup.

ie on a 32 band. an A cup would be smaller, ona 34 band a bit bigger and so on.

Yet ok the A cup on a 38 band would prob contian my boob, but it would be 4 inches too big around my back.

Thats like me going in to buy a t shirt and being told I am a size 20 rather than a 16.

chuck away the calculators, i say. When you pick up a bra pick one up that is the right size around the ribs, ie what your tape measure says.Stick to it, and go up or down in cup size.

If you find you measured 40 under your boob, and find it too tight around your ribs then go up to a 42.

Charlee · 06/11/2007 11:23

i am afraid i can't do that, you see with norks my size if i didn't wear a bra i ouls kill unsuspecting padestrians from miles off. I wear bras to save lives.

Upsidedowncake · 06/11/2007 16:14

lol CHarlee

BarefootShirl · 06/11/2007 16:45

Generally don't wear a bra unless I've got an important neeting at work or similar - just never really felt comfortable with the puppies (36C) restrained. Sometimes it's pretty obvious when I go without, depending on the top I'm wearing, but I can take the occasional stares and DH loves it!

OMGhelp · 06/11/2007 18:20

If I had nice pert 36C puppies I wouldn't wear a bra either! but the weight piled on and I now have humongous knockers. My DH once looked down my cleavage as I was bent over (hoovering or some such) and said they looked like 2 zeppelins fighting in a parachute!.

OP posts:
cazboldy · 06/11/2007 18:25

if I am at home - couldn't go out without one though

spugs · 06/11/2007 18:35

i have tiny boobs (32 aa) so have to wear a bra to give the appearence of having some! im pregnant and have gone up to a b cup which is ace, stll wouldnt go bra less though

OMGhelp · 07/11/2007 09:41

My mum loved being preggers as she actually got a cleavage (was 32a before). On my sister she went all the way up to a C cup. When she hit the menopause she also went up to a B cup. Maybe thats whats up with me, maybe its the dreaded menopause, and my boobs are getting bigger.
