Treat for hair

LoveHeartHug · 24/02/2021 15:10

I want to buy a treat for my hair but I don't know what. I'm thinking of more of a treatment or hair mask treat.

I have hair that is about armpit length. My hair is fine and it's greasy roots and dry ends. I'm trying to grow my hair long and it's been some years since I went to a hairdresser. I trim my own hair with a hairdressers scissors. I feel my hair needs something more looking at these pictures taken last night.

I would love some volume and shine.

Are hair salon conditioners or treatments better than shop or pharmacy brands?

Just watching with interest as I've come into S&B tonight fir pretty much the same reason.

Yafilthyanimal · 24/02/2021 20:22

Get a good, proper trim.

Then use an intensive mask every week and leave on for as long as you can. I use whatever is on offer and shampoo, condition and then leave the mask on for ages while I am in the bath.

AllTheCakes · 24/02/2021 20:28

Olaplex. It is a bond repairer, so doesn’t condition, but repairs the hair. It’s about £30 a bottle but lasts ages.

Mummaofboys93 · 24/02/2021 20:56

I 2nd the Olaplex. NO.3 is the treatment but I use the whole system & my has never been in better condition!

I am someone who since about age 11 goes from wanting blonde hair to brown hair every few years. Until I found a decent hair dresser I have had my hair ruined on occasions. Think of chewing gum texture when wet 😪 Anyway, I have been using Olaplex for maybe 3/4 months & my hair is now in amazing condition! So much so my curl pattern has returned which I haven't seen in years! If I ever just left my hair to air dry it would literally be a ball of frizz, now it is very wavy again. I honestly can't wait to see what my haor dresser says as before Xmas she kept telling me I'll I'll due a big trim as it was so dry!

FreshFaceTime · 24/02/2021 21:21

Agree with a proper cut when allowed. For various reasons I've been cutting my own since before the first lockdown - it's fine at first but I really think it takes its toll after a while. Front of the queue for a proper chop when the hairdressers open!

I've been using coconut oil on my hair weekly and it's definitely made a difference to the condition. But I've just read these olaplex recommendations I'm now tempted...

@Mummaofboys93 @AllTheCakes Any idea if I could still use olaplex if I use bar shampoo/conditioner? Had a quick google but can't find anything about it. I'm worried about my shit postpartum hair and trying to plan recovery in advance this time round... feels like a bottle of this might help...

seensome · 24/02/2021 21:23

You've got nice hair but needs a trim, when the hairdressers are open get a trim, ask if they can trim on dry hair so they don't cut too much off but healthy ends are better than long and uneven.
Experiment curling or straightening your hair or maybe some heatless curls. Updo?
Very rarely people have wash and wear hair meaning you have to use styling products and styling tools, it looks like you dry your hair naturally?

BadEyeBri · 24/02/2021 21:24

Philip Kingsley moisture balance shampoo and conditioner. It's brilliant. He does stuff called elastiser which is like a serum you put on wet. Tames fly always and smells divine

LoveHeartHug · 24/02/2021 21:30

It's been years since I've been to a hairdresser for a trim. I was doing my own trims. The last trim I did was about 4 weeks ago. I can see from the picture the ends are looking horrific. I am ready to bite the bullet and go back to the hairdresser. Just to get it all even. Then pay more focus to tlc after a proper trim. I bought a silk cap so I will be sleeping with that on at night time.

That's right. I air dry my hair.

Thanks for the recommendations. I will search for opalex no 3 online.

Even just letting it mostly air dry and then finishing it off with the hair dryer can make a massive difference. I can never be arsed to dry my hair straight from the shower but as long as I catch it with the dryer before it's completely dried on its own it seems happy. I give mine a quick once over with the straighteners too - takes about 2 minutes max.

GeorgeTheFirst · 24/02/2021 21:41

Philip Kingsley elasticizer.

And just give yourself a ponytail haircut to get the ends off - they need to go

Mummaofboys93 · 24/02/2021 21:54

@FreshFaceTime You could definitely use the Olaplex NO.3 treatment & still use your bar soap & conditioner. You use the NO.3 for 10 mins before a wash but I have been leaving it on over night on occasions.

FreshFaceTime · 24/02/2021 22:01

@Mummaofboys93 thank you!

LunarCatAndDaffodils · 25/02/2021 00:50

Christophe Robin Prickly Pear Oil Mask

As you air dry your hair, and it’s got a very slight wave, think about asking a hair dresser to razor the ends so that little curls form at the bottom whilst maintaining enough weight to pull the main part of the hair straight.

Also Olaplex 0 and 3.

idontlikealdi · 25/02/2021 07:12

Do you tie it up a lot and what with - it looks like there is a line of breakage along the hair tie?

LoveHeartHug · 25/02/2021 09:12

I hope that's not breakage in my hair. I am new to tying my hair up and I prefer hair buns. I think that's where I coil my hair around into a bun. I never do it when it's wet. Always on dry hair.

Thank you so much for all of the replies. I did a pony tail trim last night and it looks so much more better.

I ordered some olaplex no.3 and a Philip kingsley elasticizer. I won't use them all together.

I adopted some new practices for haircare lately like protective styles, hair drying turban, nighttime silk cap, some supplements - so I hope they all help.

I want to emerge from lockdown looking like rapunzel.

Oh yes OP, the trim has made it look alot better.

Good luck with the new haircare stuff, I honestly really do rate the Olaplex No.3 definitely worth the price.

Grognonne · 25/02/2021 12:57

The PK elasticizer made my fine hair horrible and greasy, I had to wash it straight after. I think it’s only recommended for very thick hair. The Kiehl’s olive oil mask worked wonders for me.

MuddleMoo · 25/02/2021 14:37

You can get an oloplex trial kit of 3,4,5&6 i think that's treatment, shampoo & conditioner and a leave in thing

pinkflamingo112 · 10/04/2021 15:14
