So I'd almost finished up a tube of lip balm (in an advent from a few years ago although I've had this product on the go since summer). So I thought.

About a month ago, hating waste and wanting to get more frugal with my lotions and potions I cut the tube in half so I could use the top part as a lid IYSWIM? There was lots left so I used a clean finger to scrape out as required.

Today I've chopped both ends of the tube again to get to the extremities and there is still LOADS left!

So whatever you do, if there's a way to chop packaging up do it as otherwise you're throwing so much away!

realise I could be preaching to the converted here Grin)

Pic so you can see how diddy the tube is!

Tubes are bad for this, what you want is a tin.Grin

IReallyNeedMoreGin · 24/02/2021 13:15

I always do this. I do the same with lipsticks too. If I'm paying £10 a go I'm using the lot! I scrape it out into a small tub or use a lip brush to get to the stuff in the base. Can often get several more weeks use doing that.

FreshFaceTime · 24/02/2021 13:22

With stick lip balms, I use the 'wrong' end of a pair of tweezers to scrape the bottom bit out each time I want to use it... same with stick concealers... there's always loads left at the bottom. Admittedly I don't tend to do this while out and about but it's fine at home.

WellTidy · 24/02/2021 13:54

I’ve done this for years, starting with when clinique’s body wash (a peachy colour) first came out and was the, to me, incredibly high price of £12. I cut the tube and had a good few weeks of daily washing out of both ends.

WellTidy · 24/02/2021 13:55

Oh my lord. That sounded a bit rude!

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 24/02/2021 14:04

It did Grin

Ahhh glad I'm in frugal company.

Yes bella tins are the way forward and I'd always rather buy those. I also hate small bottles for this reason as it's impossible to get the dregs.

Been doing this with my tubes of Benefit Porefection for years it's nothing new!

cannaethink · 24/02/2021 15:39

I have to get my Stanley knife out to cut open tougher plastic bottles of body moisturiser Grin

DinosaurDiana · 24/02/2021 15:42

I always do this with my Liz Earle cleanser, loads left in it.

TommyKnocker · 24/02/2021 15:47

You need a tube squeezer - like a mini wringer. You can get them on Amazon.

user1471523870 · 24/02/2021 16:01

I always do it for every creamy product. For liquids I just turn them outside down and even try to squeeze some water to dilute it and get it out (if it's something that can be diluted of course!).
I am not tight in the slightest but I hate unnecessary waste.

tobee · 24/02/2021 21:57

Do the manufacturers do this on purpose? 🤔

woodhill · 24/02/2021 21:59

I always cut the tubes

BeaLola · 25/02/2021 01:49

Absolutely always cut through every tube - have at mo a Jo Malone shower scrub one cut up - at least 2 weeks of stuff eked out into remaining tube for me to use - also have a Pantene 3 minute hair conditioner tube cut in half and all scrapped into remaining tube - again about 2 weeks worth of product left .

The only thing I have used recently where there was nothing to scrap out was with a REN product / the inside was a bit like a used wine box inside - I think they call it a bladder (?) - self deflated on emptying so you get to use every bit of product.

TheChosenTwo · 25/02/2021 07:03

I recently did this with my Ren jelly cleanser thing and decanted the remains into a pot - I got another 2 weeks out of it and probably enough left for one or two more uses. I hate wasting good products - nothing worse than throwing away something when you know there’s a bit (or a lot) left in it!
I’ve got a teeny tiny sample of a Jo Loves perfume that I’m trying to make my mind up on, it’s lovely but the scent vanishes after an hour - there’s a little bit left in the bottom of the sample but the tube doesn’t go all the way down to the bottle and the top doesn’t want to come out - why would anyone design such a thing?!

thedownpipe · 25/02/2021 07:09

Haha! I always cut tubes in half! I once got DH to break a glass container for me because the makeup liquid was too thick to get it all out normally and I’d paid £35 for it. Grin

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 25/02/2021 09:30

Ha! That's awesome Down!

If I drop a make up palette and the make up breaks making it tricky to use in the flat container (works best with a single colour or blusher/bronzer) I very carefully tip the contents into some clean tin foil and the use a tea spoon to gently crush the rest. I put that into a small pot too.

Had a proud mum moment this week when DD was cutting her hand cream bottle in half Grin

OP posts:
KirstenBlest · 25/02/2021 09:37

I do it too.
I use a tiny little spatula and put it in a clean pot.

Trial sizes are so wasteful.

FreshFaceTime · 25/02/2021 10:36

I'm sure I saw a pinterest hack once that told you how to use some kind of oil to kind of glue the cracked eyeshadow/blusher back together in the container...

BallsToYouSue · 25/02/2021 10:44

Yes! This is one reason why I far prefer things like body butter (in a tub) to lotion (in a tube). The only things I'll buy in bottles are things like oils where it's easy to get the last bit out.

Zinnia · 25/02/2021 17:11

My mum did/does this so I've always done the same! I actually prefer tubes for this reason, bottles and pumps are harder to cut open not that that stops me trying Grin

isthismylifenow · 25/02/2021 17:16

I have done this for years too. I currently have the clarins sample sizes cut of face cream and neck cream and I'll get a few days out of it.

If anyone has a trick to get all the double serum out of the pump bottle, please share. I even tried pliers on that and thst lid would not budge. One side finished faster than the other, and I can see it looking at me but I cannot get that last bit out.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 25/02/2021 17:27

I'm guessing I'm not the only one to have either cut the themselves on either the plastic remnants or on their choice of cutting implement over the years?! Grin

OP posts:
IAmJackieWeaver · 25/02/2021 17:39

I always do that, can squeeze and extra week out of most things
