Makeup... what do I need?

You’re probably going to think I’m really weird, but I’m in my 30s and don’t really know anything about makeup. I’m thinking nows the time to start wearing it on occasion and I need some help with what I need!
Am I on the right lines with this list, and can you give me some brand recommendations for each? And let me know if there’s anything I’m missing? I’m basically starting from scratch. I’m just looking for a nice natural everyday look.

  • Primer
  • Colour corrector? (I came across this during my research and sounds like it could be good - I have some redness and also very dark circles under my eyes)
  • Foundation
  • eyeliner (I think brown is what I need for a natural look?)
  • Mascara

Concealer.
Translucent powder to set your concealer and foundation, particularly if you have oily skin.
Eye shadow.
Lipstick.
Blusher.
Decent brushes to apply said make up.
A really good cleanser for removing at the end of the day.

Hi, the most important thing is to enjoy yourself and figure out what works for you - somewhat of a long process! I think you could check out some YouTube channels for tutorials and go from there. I would recommend Lisa Eldridge, Ali Andrea and Wayne Goss for starters and Sam Chapman and Katie Jane Hughes on Instagram. All five are very talented makeup artists and do both dramatic and more subtle day time looks. Don't get overwhelmed, it's a bit trickier at the minute with the restrictions although you don't say if you are in the UK. Luckily, there are some really decent brands that deliver on product quality but are very reasonable; I would say ELF, NYX, Revolution are all great brands that make some great makeup and also some dupes for expensive items. Something else you can do in the future is get a make over or makeup lesson from some of the big players such as Bobby Brown, Mac and Charlotte Tilbury. I do know that Charlotte Tilbury at least have doing virtual consultations but be wary of buying stuff you don't need. Would need more info such as eye and hair colour and skin tone to suggest particular products and I have written you an essay already sorry! 😁 Love makeup and beauty, it's a real form of meditation and a delight for me! X

A lot depends on the sort of look you want to achieve.

Currently my make up is very natural looking. I use:
CC Cream (less coverage than foundation)
Concealer (if the under eyes are bad)
Eyebrow pencil
Mascara
Blusher

If I were going on a night out (remember them?) I would use foundation rather than CC cream and add in eyeshadow, lipstick and translucent powder.

Neutral eyeshadow?

Depends what you fancy really. Urban decay do decent shadows for not a ridiculous price but it depends if you want to experiment, you might be best starting with something like Revlon and seeing what you like before spending lots.

a nice tinted Lip Balm might be more beginner friendly than a lipstick.
Blusher if your foundation is quite heavy and you want to put a bit of colour back into your cheeks.

I always wear Primer on top of my moisturiser either on it's own or under BB cream or foundation.

Currently I use Soap & Glory Stop The Blot.

Brushes:
Real techniques are a good place to start.
I'd get an eyeshadow brush and a foundation brush (but you might prefer using your fingers for foundation) and if you use powder and blush a brush for these.

Notanotherhun · 22/02/2021 13:17

I wear L'Oréal brow artist gel, a myabelline mascara and a Lisa Eldridge lipstick. Done.

It depends for the look you’re going for, do you have any photos/examples of celebrities? If you’re not used to wearing makeup I’d keep it simple at first.

Tinted moisturiser/bb cream or foundation depending on how much coverage you like.
Concealer
Mascara
Balm/gloss/lipstick (masks mean I rarely bother these days!)
Translucent powder if oily skin

I am pasty so I like blusher or bronzer. I don’t generally bother with primer for everyday, same with eyeliner and eyeshadow - mascara is enough to make my eye seem bigger and brighter. I have some expensive brushes but prefer to apply with my fingers mostly.

I’ve just ordered some glossier products, worth considering for a natural, fresh look.

Thanks so much everyone! That’s given me a good base to start with I think. Maybe I’ll go for cheaper brands first until I know what works best for me (eg. cc cream or foundation). Will check out some YouTube videos too!
