Bar shampoo

I've recently decided to try bar shampoo, cut down on plastic etc etc. The first couple of times I used it I was really impressed, lathered up nicely and my hair felt really clean afterwards. A few weeks down the line and I'm not impressed. My hair feels really claggy after I've washed it. I've made sure I'm rinsing properly, but my hair just feels dirty all of the time!
The manufacturer claims that there's no transition time, but is this really the case? Do I need to just stick it out or is it just not right for me? It doesn't usually matter what shampoo i use, my hair normally isn't fussy except when I spend £6 on a shampoo bar it seems!

These are the shampoo bars I swear by. I tried sooo many and they just left my hair feeling claggy exactly like you describe, I was almost ready to give up as I didn't want a 'transition' period.

Anyways love these, don't really even need conditioner I find either - ( I have straight, natural coloured hair & like you, usually don't have any fuss with whatever shampoo I use).

Forgot to add, I've been using these for about 2.5 years now I reckon. I alternate between the scents to mix it up a bit. The postage is quite high on the site as a downside so I tend to stock up when I order & get a few treats / presents too.

Garnier have just brought out a range which have good reviews.

I find that sls free shampoo bars need a vinegar rinse every few washes to avoid that claggy feeling. I got on best with the peppermint bar from Pure ‘Nuff Stuff.

Tayzonday · 19/02/2021 11:20

Which shampoo bar are you using?

FreshFaceTime · 24/02/2021 09:47

It took me the best part of a year to work out which bar shampoo and conditioner combination suited my hair best. I can see why people give up! A friend had warned me it can take a while and that's the only reason I persevered.

I only tried them because my hair had fallen out and then gone to shit after having babies and I got desperate after trying everything else. Think that probably helped in the long run as my hair felt shit already so I wasn't bothered about the transition or trying out different ones.

Anyway I'm a couple of years down the line now and my hair has never felt better. It's soft, shiny, feels clean and I can't go back (I tried a normal shampoo recently as a one off, can't remember why, and it made my hair feel completely rank, so I actually can't go back!)

My staples are now...

A shampoo bar called Shine On off Amazon - bit of a granny soap smell but my conditioner hides that

Ethique conditioner bar called Guardian (for dry hair) I don't have especially dry hair but have found this one works best for me

Coconut oil hair mask once a week (don't always manage that often but that's what I aim for) - just normal coconut oil you would use to cook with. Scoop it out with a spoon, melt it in your hands, then rub it onto dry hair and leave it as long as you can. I leave mine all day at the moment as I'm not really going anywhere or seeing anyone! Takes a few washes to get it out.

Also... I've gone from needing to wash my hair every other day to washing it once or twice a week. So that has probably helped with the condition - not styling it as often.

I've tried quite a few.

I think there are some bars that are like solid shampoo, and my hair feels great.

And there are some that are more like normal bars of soap, and they leave my hair feeling dirty and simultaneously dry and greasy.

It's a bit pot luck, but so far I have liked lush, gruum, and have also been using a garnier bar this week which seems quite nice.

RockaLock · 24/02/2021 10:10

Oh yes, ethique was also ok.

XiCi · 24/02/2021 10:14

I got an Ethique shampoo and conditioner bar in beauty advent calendar and love them. Have been using them for a couple of months now. People started commenting about how nice my hair looked almost immediately. Bit more of a faff than normal shampoo but results are worth it. I haven't noticed any change after using them a while

PalacePaper · 24/02/2021 11:34

I use ethique as well, I've been really pleased with it. I find it much better for my hair than normal shampoo, and haven't had any issues with residue, etc.

goose1964 · 24/02/2021 11:53

I use faith in nature. I'm wondering if you're using too much.

BloodyCovid · 24/02/2021 11:56

I find my scalp gets very dry. Should I use a conditioner bar more often? I rarely bother.

Mumdiva99 · 24/02/2021 12:00

I've used a few and find them no problem and no claggy hair.

The only bar I threw away was a M&S conditioner. Goodness knows what it was supposed to do.....but there was no conditioning action at all. I was really embarrassed because I bought a few sets as presents too!!!

FreshFaceTime · 24/02/2021 12:01

I don't really put the conditioner near my scalp –prefer to keep it to mid/ends –so not sure if it would make a difference. Have you tried out a few different shampoo bars to see if you can find one that's better suited/doesn't make your scalp dry?
