Henna hair dye?

NewMum2021x · 18/02/2021 15:21

20 weeks pregnant atm and I'm naturally ginger but have dark brown hair... for some reason my last 3 box dyes over the last 10 weeks haven't worked on my roots at all! It looks awful. So I'm thinking of trying henna hair dye as it's supposed to be mega strong. Anyone recommend any brands to use? I've never used henna before

Be careful of allergic reactions while pregnant, definitely skin test before you proceed

I've been a henna user for years and I'd never go near a henna boxed dye, the sort that comes in different shades, too much chance of metallic additives in them. I only use body art quality henna from a reputable seller.

I'd also be wary of using henna during pregnancy. Henna DOES get absorbed by your body to some degree, when I leave it on my hair overnight and go for a wee in the morning, it has a definite henna tint and smell (sorry TMI).

Can’t comment on Henna’s safety in pregnancy, but it is a completely natural hair colourant that has been generally used safely for thousands of years. Very kind to your hair too.

It is messy to apply and a lengthy application time compared to dye .

You'd have to do a patch test ( on skin) and a strand test on a length of hair especially as you have dye .

When I did mine (cut a piece of hair ) my hair was cropped as I was planning to grow out a dye . The henna went chestnutty , nice enough. On my actual hair it went coppery brown and the colour keeps developing as it oxidises .

There's a long (very long Grin ) thread on MN , I'll try and bump it .
You need to mix, apply , protect (everything from skin to anything it might fall on) and rinsing takes a while . I used cnditioner as a first "wash" then rinsed then shampoo .

My hair ever got the mirror gloss sadly .

I think you can use henna over nix dye but you should not use box dye over henna as it can cause some chemical reaction.

might be worth having a Google in case you want to.go back to box dye afters .

I had henna applied on my hair when I was three months pregnant by a hairdresser in Goa.She did a patch test first and I came back the next day.The henna was left on for two hours and then washed off. There were no after effects from it.Henna really enhances red hair.
