Hunter Wellies

Are Hunter wellie boots worth £100-£200?

We live rurally and seem to get through a pair of boots every year... are hunters worth it?

I used to think they were worth it, but my last two pairs haven't lasted long.

My current pair have split from the soles on both feet (15 months old), and my previous pair split on the back of the ankle and wore through the sole after two years (literally just after the warranty ran out).

About to try and get my current ones replaced under warranty, but if they don't last at least two or three years they'll be my last pair. I feel like the quality has gone downhill as they have became more and more of a 'fashion' item.

Spied · 18/02/2021 10:52

I like Hunters although I'm aware there is lots of hate for them on here.
I think they are durable and mine have lasted (although I'll admit I'm not rural- but do plenty of forest walks with ddog).
My finances mean I'm not really comfortable spending ££ so I tend to pick them up from online 'brand alley' style sites for around £60. I've bought pairs for dp and dc too.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 18/02/2021 10:54

Rubbish wellies now. Used to be brilliant. I lived and rode in a pair for years. Then production moved to China ......

Prufrocks · 18/02/2021 10:54

Mine get almost daily use in the winter and are still going strong 5 or 6 years on.

They’re definitely not the very bestest wellies you can buy but the prices for the ones my farmer ex husband would wear are astronomical.

In my experience they’re no-frills dependable wellies.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 18/02/2021 10:57

Not worth it anymore, they’ve outsourced the manufacturing. Mine from seven years ago are still amazing but I wouldn’t buy them now.

I second Brandally. I’ve got some bargains on there and the customer service is surprisingly good if they get things wrong (I had a totally different bag sent to the one I ordered, they sorted it out in a jiffy, U.K. call centre too)

I bet they have some great deals on wellies.

zenasfuck · 18/02/2021 10:58

Nooo they are rubbish now for anything other than festivals and the odd dog walk

For serious hard wearing wellies go for muck boots, ariat or le chameu

MrBeagles · 19/02/2021 16:40

I agree they used to be sturdy. My last pair got ripped on something while I was out walking, and developed a weird 'white bloom' like a coating of white dust. They looked mouldy. But something else

allmycats · 19/02/2021 16:42

Mine are around 8 years old now and going strong. If you are a small foot size get the children's Hunters, go up to circa size 5. Much less money, same boots.

CushionsandCandles · 19/02/2021 17:06

Overpriced fashion prices and not durable or comfortable.
Le Chameau or Aigle much better

Nohomemadecandles · 19/02/2021 17:08

No.
I have a pair of my Gran's from the 80's - Huntress - and they are still going strong though!
New ones no better than, say, Joules. Fashion wellies!

Anoisagusaris · 19/02/2021 17:09

I find mine very comfortable (for wellies). I only wear them occasionally so can’t comment on durability. Bought them in TX Maxx for a good price.

My DH’s Aigles ripped after a short time.

yankeedoodlecandy · 19/02/2021 17:10

I've had mine for about 11 years and they're still going strong. I got them from BrandAlley

RinkyD · 19/02/2021 17:11

No they are not, my last pair were awful and my local indie shoe seller who sells very expensive shoes/brands will not stock them as they are not so good.

Anoisagusaris · 19/02/2021 17:11

DD wears her riding boots as wellies.

Bluntness100 · 19/02/2021 17:13

No mine are done in and about three years old. Like proper knackered. Split, rubber coming off, the lot. I wouldn’t buy them again. Cheapo ones last longer.

BumBurnerBum · 19/02/2021 17:15

No I love the look of them but mine split after less than a year (and not very frequent use).
My cheap Dunlop pair have been going strong for 4 years and much more use after we moved to a more rural area.
They are not as fashionable but are just as comfortable and my feet stay dry.

ElderMillennial · 19/02/2021 19:45

I've had some for about ten years and they've lasted well but I don't wear them that many times a year

Shorthairlady · 19/02/2021 19:52

I had to buy some to go to a wedding and I wouldn't be without them. They are the shorter ones. I was miffed at having to buy them initially as I am NOT a welly person by any stretch of the imagination but they are great.

Shorthairlady · 19/02/2021 19:54

Admittedly I bought mine about 6 years ago. Don't know if quality has gone down since then.

Woody096 · 19/02/2021 19:55

I don’t rate Hunters at all. Also I find them uncomfortable for longer walks. I have some Aigle wellies which I love & some ankle Barbour wellies for summer. Both are great

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 19/02/2021 20:36

I think they moved manufacturing to China a few years ago and things went downhill. At least if they are made cheap, sell them cheap!

dannydyerismydad · 19/02/2021 20:41

Mine have just perished on the ankle. They were more than 30 years old.

I fear the replacements won't last 3, but we will see.
