Selling 'designer' pieces

In my 20s, I had expensive tastes, and bought things like a Chloe bag, a Burberry trench, Louboutins, as well as lots of coats, tops and dresses from more mid-range brands like Maje and Sandro.

Now I'm in my 30s and have two young children. I permanently have bodily effluvium on me. I do not need or particularly want a lot of this stuff anymore. Should I sell them, and if so, where's best to do this? They're all in really good condition. Or should I keep them for my daughters to wear one day?

Vestiaire Collective is probably best for the first three items you mention.

Meggymoo777 · 17/02/2021 14:17

I really wish my Mum would have saved a few of her bits from the 70s/80s! Fashion has a tendency to come round!

But, in saying that, I'd keep a few key pieces and be selling everything else.

I regularly purchase from the Designer Exchange in Dublin, you'll find them online. They'll offer up to 60% rrp for mint pieces and they're a pleasure to deal with!

BabyBee93 · 17/02/2021 14:19

YY to Vestaire Collective. Alternatively Depop is great for selling second hand clothes too

I wouldn't bother keeping anything aside for your daughters unless they are truly timeless, classic pieces. If they don't like the items you'll have missed out on money as your things will devalue over time and you won't get as much as if you sold them now. OR...just wear them yourself! Life's too short Wink

ruruvision · 17/02/2021 14:28

Thank you - I'll see how much I can get and decide. They're lovely pieces, but I just don't have the occasion to wear most of them anymore. Plus the Chloe bag - Paddington, if anyone's familiar - weighs a fucking tonne with nothing inside! I don't know how I ever thought it was feasible to carry that beast around.

To be completely honest with you, I doubt your items will sell for much. Especially the mid-range clothes. Louboutin shoes may fetch something decent but not the rest - it could very well be more hassle selling them than it’s worth. As others have mentioned, most of it has devalued over time, and some probably isn’t on trend any more so less interest regardless of the brand name.

Depop is not a good place to sell lol. Full of beggars and scammers! Everyone I know hates it.

Jackie2022 · 17/02/2021 14:42

On Depop, there’s a lot of active Paddington bag listings for an average of £200 - presumably there’s not much interest as no one has snapped them up yet

PegasusReturns · 17/02/2021 14:48

I’ve had some luck selling on Vestiaire but you won’t see much return bu the time you pay the fees.

I sold a virtually new celine bag that was about £1800 for £700 which gave me about £450 in my pocket. Probably should have kept it!

massistar · 17/02/2021 16:37

I've got a Paddington that I can't get rid of .. also wonder what the hell I was thinking! Practically got backache every time I used it!

FANTINE2 · 17/02/2021 19:24

Have you looked at the website, Reloved again.
Based in London, deals in preloaded designer items
Have a look on IG.

mena51 · 18/02/2021 01:53

Your best bet would be eBay - when they do £1 final value fee promotion for things that sell for up to £500. I've sold half a dozen used mid range designer bags on there with profits between £400-600 (brands such as Mulberry and Stella McCartney). People on Depop do not like paying much for most things, and Vestiaire Collective fees are a joke. Things also take longer to shift on other platforms compared to eBay.

Masterpieceontheshelf · 18/02/2021 09:11

I would say eBay too, it gets a bad press but it's simple way of promoting your items to a large group of customers.
I list things buy it now at a decent price, then stick the items in my loft and wait for them to sell (can take a year on some things because I don't price them cheaply).
I think I have about £2k worth of items on there at any one time (all my own personal items or clothes etc I've bought from eBay which don't suit me!) and I probably make average £200-£100 a month from it.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 18/02/2021 10:09

I sell alot of high value items on ebay. Vestiere take too much in fees.
Louboutins sell well as will a burberry trench. Just make sure you grab a sell for a £1 promo.

havanka · 18/02/2021 13:39

I'd also agree with eBay, the fees are way less than Vestiaire or a dress agency (when they are open).

I'd say your main issue on eBay will be proving the authenticity of your pieces. All of those brands you mention will have loads of fakes and replicas listed, or you may come up against accusations of selling fakes from unscrupulous buyers. So I'd only list them if you have some kind of proof.

If they are over ten years old, I'd be prepared to sell for a lot less than you may think, or compared to their original price, but if it's a choice of not selling, or getting something, surely a bit of money is better? You'll be surprised how it all adds up.

I do the same as Masterpieceontheshelf and make a fair bit of pocket money monthly from my eBay sales, but I'm prepared to play the long game, only do Buy It Now, and do not waver on price.

I'm very choosy about what I sell internationally as return costs aren't covered by eBay, and the countries I sell to (basically I only list really cheap, light weight stuff I'd be prepared to take a loss on and I limit countries to pretty mu western Europe). I also send tracked and/or signed postage for all but really cheap items, so I'm insured.

Jackie2022 · 18/02/2021 13:58

On eBay you could search for your items then filter by completed/sold listings, to see how much buyers have paid for them recently. From there you can gauge whether you want to sell them or not. If you’re not going to get much, you can always donate some of it to charity

AgnesNaismith · 18/02/2021 14:03

Some things devalue...but some don’t. I’ve sold sale louboutins for more than I bought them for on eBay!

ruruvision · 19/02/2021 10:12

Thanks all - I've gone for eBay and Facebook market place. A two-pronged approach.

Users of Vestiaire, can I ask please - do you post it to Vestiaire, who then checks the item and takes proper photos and sells for you? Or you do it yourself on their website, eBay-style?

ruruvision · 19/02/2021 10:16

I've also realised my Chloe bag is NOT the Paddington! I considered the Paddington but actually got the Paraty, as it felt less clunky.

ebay is the easiest. I've bought from vestiaire & depob but not sold.

sansucre · 19/02/2021 17:11

Be advised that the resell market is heavily oversaturated at the moment, particularly as successive lockdowns have made a lot of people take stock of their wardrobes and have massive clear outs.

If you are deadly serious about offloading items, you might want to consider pricing the Louboutins, Chloe bag, Maje and Sandro items aggressively, so they sell. However, the Burberry trench will achieve a good price. I would recommend you list it at x price and accept offers. If you sell it at as eBay auction, it might go for a lot less than it should sell for.

I no longer sell on VC as the fees are too high. Be advised that if you do list on there, you take all photographs yourself. Be sure to upload the correct information/measurements otherwise if VC authenticate and the items don't match your description exactly, they will reject them.

ruruvision · 19/02/2021 19:14

I've listed my Maje coat so far. I attach a photo. It was around £450 new. How much would you charge on eBay?

I'm having second thoughts about the trench and bag!

It's 80% wool for the most part, 90% virgin wool and 10% cashmere in parts, and the sleeves are leather. It's in good condition. Euro size 36.

OP posts:
gigity · 19/02/2021 19:44

On ebay search for Maje coats or wool/cashmere coats then filter for sold options & sort by price. You will get an idea of price to list it for, it may take a while to sell as you wait for that one buyer but eventually they come.

Henneypenny7 · 19/02/2021 19:44

What size is the Burberry trench? If you put it up for sake send me a link

gigity · 19/02/2021 19:46

Eg I would list the below for £250 but take £200 if it was vg condition.

ruruvision · 19/02/2021 19:53

I've actually listed already, just wanted to get an idea of how realistic the price was! Grin
