Out of the loop re new beauty brands from the past few years: please help me out!

Hi,

I used to be really into beauty products before having my first child almost 8 years ago, buying new make-up regularly and making an effort to wear it every day. That soon went out of the window!

I now feel like treating myself to some lovely new make-up but there are so many brands that are totally new to me that I don’t know where to start! The make-up I own is from classic brands like MAC, Chanel, Dior and NARS and I feel like I might be missing out!

I’ve seen Glossier mentioned and am very tempted by the cloud paints. Has anyone tried these? Puff, beam and dusk look nice...

I like a fairly natural look; I don’t wear foundation - though I’d be interested in a lighter product to make my skin look even and amazing - but I like eyeshadow and a bit of blusher. I also love skin care though I’m pretty happy with my usual products. Also lipstick, though this seems a bit pointless at the moment!

I have pale skin (MAC NC15 or the lightest in most brands).

Please tell me about new beauty brands from the past few years! Any recommendations for brands and products much appreciated.

odens eye, theyre a swedish brand and do eyeshadows and blushers that people rave about. really good quality

WellTidy · 16/02/2021 12:15

I went through a few years of thinking that my tried and tested Estée Lauder skincare regime was boring and that I was missing out on new, cooler brands, which were maybe a bit cheaper or more effective.

I used a complete mix of murad, Elemis (lots of this), pixi, ren etc. I ended up with a mix of dryness, spots, irritation etc and my once normal, not at all sensitive skin was just really ugh.

I went back to Estée Lauder at the start of this year and my skin went back to how it used to be pretty much straightaway. And has stayed really good.

I get wanting to mix it up and see what’s out there, but sometimes the oldies are the best!

Thank you - I’ve never heard of them, I will have a look!

WellTidy, thanks - I agree. I made the mistake of trying the much raved about Pixi glow tonic a number of years back and my skin didn’t like it! I’m happy with my skincare routine so not looking to change it though I’m up for trying pampering products like hydrating masks.

I just feel a bit blah at the moment, my hair is in state too which isn’t helping.

Natasha Denona for eyeshadow.

Cornetttttto · 16/02/2021 20:32

Lisa Eldridge lipsticks. They double up beautifully as a blusher.

Bobbi Brown is my all time favourite brand and most of my makeup is from here, but I also have a few things from Nars, Hourglass, Becca and Marc Jacobs too. A brand I’ve recently discovered is Delilah, been pleased with the few bits I’ve bought from them.

spiralflower · 17/02/2021 08:29

Thank you. I’ve never heard of Natasha Denona and I’d heard of Lisa Eldridge but didn’t realise she had a make up range. Will look those up too Volcano explorer. Hourglass is a name I’m aware of but I couldn’t name any products.

Natasha Denona
Pat McGrath
Hourglass

I personally love high end makeup so recommend also checking out By Terry and Chantecaille.

NewScone · 17/02/2021 10:00

Ooh yes Chantecaille and Pat Mcgrath have some lovely stuff. Very expensive but great quality. Chantecaille is perfect if you like more subtle looks. Hourglass is nice but I'm not sure it's worth the money for me. Their ambient lighting powder might be worth a go. Their shade range is quite poor to be honest though.

NewScone · 17/02/2021 10:01

Natasha Denona does mini eyeshadow pallettes which are worth a look at to try the brand out. And Pat Mcgrath has a couple of cheap pallettes to save you risking a big mothership one without trying the formula.

I don't know about new, but By Terry Ombre Black Star eyeshadow crayons are great, especially Misty Rock. I've recently tried out Bareminerals foundation stick and I love it. It's moisturising and not at all drying. They have a few pale shades, Opal and Birch. I'm pretty pale and use Vanilla 02. I like traditional lipsticks but Revlon have a glossy one in chunky black bullet casing. It's really nice and smells like toffee. I have Raisin rum (browny pink) and Glossy rose which is a tawny pink. Both nice. My favourite eyeshadows are Shishedo quads. Soft and buttery and a mix of shimmers (not glittery) and matts.

LeeMiller · 17/02/2021 15:34

Not helpful but I’m also tempted by the Glossier cheek paint (and the skin tint). My DS is 2 but I also feel very out of touch as well.

Hourglass ambient light powder is absolutely lovely, my sister has it and it’s so flattering. Milk makeup looks interesting. I agree BY Terry is amazing but it’s a bit pricey for me.

grownup2 · 17/02/2021 15:48

I have glossier dusk cloudpaint blush . It's great - easy to use and not too dark for pale people used sparingly. The mascara is really impressive too for lack of clumps, naturalness and staying power.

spiralflower · 17/02/2021 15:52

Thank you everyone, I am going to do some research on these when the children are in bed. I’m quite excited!

@NewScone yes it’s the powders that I have. I agree they don’t have a big shade range. I also have a scattered light eyeshadow in smoke which is lovely too.

MaverickDanger · 17/02/2021 17:41

Love Glossier. I’m a new FTM and pretty much all of the products are quick and easy to apply, and make me look a bit fresher!

I’m an Autumn colouring and use the Skin Tint, Concealer, Boy Brow & Cloud Paints - both the Storm & Dusk colours are so flattering.

spiralflower · 18/02/2021 08:00

Thanks, I’m definitely sold on the Glossier!

Dithering on the glossier colours, it’s hard to tell how pigmented they are. Are puff and beam best for pale skin do you think? I’m a pale winter (but I suit peachy toned blush).

spiralflower · 18/02/2021 11:40

Also interested. I have puff, beam, dusk and storm on my list! Grin
