My hair is so dry

I've reached the end of my tether with my hair. It's so dry I can hardly brush it. I do everything right but I'm still looking for that elusive product that will give me normal bloody hair!
In 'normal' times I go to a hairdresser regularly for cut and colour but with lockdown I haven't seen a hairdresser since early December.
I use kerastase shampoo and conditioner for coloured hair. I use kerastase oil and L'Oréal Liss control after washing to try and control some of the frizz.
I use various deep conditioning treatments but they have little effect.
My ends aren't split and I don' use and heat on my hair- I don't even use a hairdryer. I wrap it in a microfibre towel to dry naturally.

I have tried not using the oil and liss control and I could barely walk through the door as my hair was so wild looking.
Does anyone have a miracle product?

Maybe it's because you're not styling it? A blow dryer and straightener does make hair look groomed and healthier, as long as you use heat protection and the products you use are good quality as you mentioned.

stayathomer · 15/02/2021 00:31

At the moment am using Brilliant Brunette shampoo and conditioner by John Frieda and it is AMAZING!! Would also recommend alpaparf products (natural curl) and for oils if you can find macadamia oil, my hairdresser said it's ten times better than Moroccan oil(which I adored) but less than a tenner. I also always use a heat spray (tres semme) and frizz ease. Best of luck OP!!

stayathomer · 15/02/2021 00:33

Ps my hair was worse than any hair out there and it's so nice to have it back so everything crossed. Have to add upping my water intake helped, but I wasn't drinking a lot of water at the time

This.

You can use all the products in the world, but if you don't style your hair properly, it will look rubbish.

I'm guessing from your descriptions perhaps your hair naturally has some kind of curl or wave in it. If so you need to embrace the curl, which means no brushing between washes!

Carouselfish · 15/02/2021 00:35

I have a jar of organic coconut oil. I put about half a teaspoon through my hair when it's wet after washing.
The only supermarket bought conditioner that's had that same, heavy silky effect as the little bottle you get free in a box of home hairdye is weirdly, Head and Shoulders Apple.
Both sound super low budget and they are but they really make my hair nice - not dry at all and that's saying something since I've started being blonde.

Mrsmummy90 · 15/02/2021 00:39

I'm having the same problem.
Hair is so dry, poofy for the first time in my life and it's always static.
I also have a ridiculous amount of split ends.
I use conditioner, conditioning treatments and leave in conditioner. I use heat protection as well but my hair is awful.
I'm taking vitamins to help with hair as well but so far nothing has changed.

Melange99 · 15/02/2021 00:51

Try the new L'Oréal 8 second water stuff. It's the best selling hair product in US and has just become available here. My hair is awful because of lack of cut since Oct. Wasn't expecting much of this. I thought it was a leave in treatment, it isn't, it's a rinse out and you can use conditioner after if you want. I don't. It's amazing. Smooth hair, swishy, feels like I have just had it cut. Stupid bottle and applicator, and over perfumed, but I can ignore that for the results. Seems to be one of those products on offer somewhere so don't pay full price which is about a tenner.

amazingtracy · 15/02/2021 01:03

Thanks for the replies- I've tried a fair few of those products already but I will check out alpaparf.
@cranberrypie- I have all the fancy hairdryers and curlers and ghds, however my stupid hair is so damn thick it honestly takes 40-50 minutes before it's in any way dry- and it still looks crap. If I had a spare two hours I could straighten it with my GHDs afterward but I'm lacking time, energy and potential long term damage.
@Moomoolandmoomooland my hair is very thick, frizzy and once or twice a year the hair gods bless me with loose curls. I loose so much hair in the shower I have a permanent plunger in the shower to clear the drain.

@Melange99 definitely going to check out that stuff.

I use Opalex 3.

My hair is so dry
Tdaadfb100 · 15/02/2021 02:05

I use Opalex 3 (and 6) a good conditioner too.
I found a straightening brush the most fantastic thing ever! Less damaging than traditional straighteners and much quicker to use too.

The shopping list is growing. Will dig out the old ceramic brush again.

It's amazing. I've used it twice and ordered another 6 bottles from Amazon. I have dry, post menopausal wavy frizzy poofy hair. Or I did, until last week.
RacheyCat · 15/02/2021 14:54

Are you in a hard water area?

Also, just the general environment has a huge effect. I've been living somewhere absolutely freezing during the winters for the last eight years and as soon as the temperature drops below zero and the air loses its moisture, my hair becomes swooshy and silky. Otherwise, it's frizzy and awful.

Now, I've moved somewhere warm and my huge poofy hair has returned, so I just bought some Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray which you use when you blow-dry your hair. You have to do a proper blow-dry, with a round brush and tension, which I had literally never done before in my life, but you do end up with hair that looks like a professional blowdry and you're only meant to need to use it every three washes. Like PP say, you kind of do have to style your hair for it to look reliably good. It used to take me ages even to get my hair into a pony tail that wasn't all lumpy and irregular, but when I blow-dry it, it just swoops back all neat and glossy.

DreamingInColours · 15/02/2021 15:03

Olaplex treatment has made a big difference to my dry hair. Far less frizzy. I have used it about 7 or 8 times now and leave it in for a few hours.

raffegiraffe · 15/02/2021 15:19

My bleached blonde hair finally looks nice with L'Oréal 8 second water and redken air dry cream for fine hair. Amazing products. Air dry gives me loose curls and no frizz

amazingtracy · 15/02/2021 22:36

That 8 hour water stuff must be good because I can't get my hands on it. Stupid amazon won't deliver to me.
I have ordered the Olaplex and have high hopes.
@RacheyCat my wAter is hard but I have a softening system installed.

I heeded the good advice on this thread and attacked my hair with my ceramic brush. I should have taken a before picture as I looked a wild woman that spent a month living in the wilds of a forest. ( seriously!).
Now it's not perfect but it's improved. ( I had to dig through my hair product mountain)

My hair is so bad that it's like straw- I don't brush my hair unless it's just before I wash it but at the moment it's so bad that it's nearly impossible to brush.
I'll deep condition it again tomorrow night.

Has it sustained heat damage or anything? It’s unusual for hair to be that dry. It it all over or just the bottom half? Could you cope with giving it a bit of a trim if it would help? YouTube hairdressers like Brad Mondo give some good simple cutting techniques.

Pinecone90 · 16/02/2021 05:18

Have you changed up your shampoo lately? Weirdly mine gets like this when my hair gets used to a shampoo, so adding conditioners and leave ins doesn’t help because the problem (counterintuitively) is build up.

Porridgeoat · 16/02/2021 05:20

Are you on the pill?

PippaRose · 16/02/2021 10:33

Hi OP, I got some from Superdrug off the back of this thread, half price too!

Anyadvice463 · 16/02/2021 10:38

Do you know if any of the products you are using has protein in it? I find when my hair is dry/overmoisturised it needs a good protein treatment.

Phyllis321 · 16/02/2021 10:41

Is it worth going silicone-free for a bit to see if it helps? Silicone can coat the hair and prevent it absorbing good stuff.

amazingtracy · 16/02/2021 22:25

No heat damage
No pill-
Not sure about the shampoo and need to change- I'll dig out a new shampoo from my hair product mountain.
Still on the hunt for the miracle water thingy and some of the other products mentioned by pps are on their way.
@Anyadvice463 funny you should say that- I ordered this (hopefully the photo attachment worked).
Fingers crossed. Operation 'hair that doesn't look like I live in a bush up a windy mountain' is in action.

Rice water! Keep the rice water when you cook rice, put it in for 20 mins or so and then wash out and condition, wrap in cotton t shirt to dry, not a towel
