Really warm coat for 9 year old girl?

Any recommendations? Her current coat isn't cutting it and spring is still not that close! Any recommendations greatly appreciated. I was looking at the Mountain Warehouse padded zip up and some people said it's not warm enough for this cold zero degrees weather.

Are you layering underneath?

Mine were out this morning farting on in the park and didn’t seem remotely concerned about the weather. Vest, long sleeved T-shirt, fleece jumper and coat on top. And, fleece lined waterproof trouser. They were Trespass coats - longer parka ones.

We’ve had a selection of Trespass and they’ve been pretty decent. We’ve also had Didrikson, Poland O Pyret and another Nordic brand, but to be honest, the Trespass has been good.

If you have a decathlon near you, they are really good. Maybe they are open since its sports, etc, I'm not sure. I got mine very warm parkas from there, excellent coats

Ski wear is good- I like the Boden ski jackets for DC. They have a really clever design which keeps the cold out.

I get the ski jackets from Mountain Warehouse for my DDs. Warm and waterproof and reasonably priced.

Where are the fleece lined waterproof trousers from?? as we definitely need some of these! She won't wear vests but we have all the other layers. Particularly cold where we are right now.

I've bought fleece lined trousers from Verbaudet for DD1 before (which were great), but this year I've just bought her a pair of salopettes that she pulls over her normal leggings when we go out for walks. They are warm and waterproof. Plenty of places are still selling off ski wear cheaply at the moment.

I second Boden for warm coats. This Winter DD1 has had a lovely thick parka, and DD2 has their 3- or 4-in-1 (can't remember what it's called now!) waterproof, fleece lined coat. Both have been really warm and happy in them, although the parka didn't do a great job of keeping DD1 dry in the snow (she's never had a problem in the rain, strangely!). In previous years we've had Joules and ski brands like Tog24, which have been good too.

DD1 in particular gets very cold when out if not properly dressed. The salopettes will become a Winter staple for her, but she's also had success with layering using thin outdoorsy-branded fleeces under her coat. We've swapped to welly socks for country walks too, which has stopped complaints of cold feet.

The Polarn coats that have a zip-in fleece probably have the most flexibility. Just the fleece for late spring, early autumn, just the jacket for early spring, late autumn and both for deep winter.

Didriksons coat/parka and ski salopettes here. Plus merino vest.

Dd was wearing fleece lined hiking trousers, long sleeve t-shirt and fleece today with coat over and a wool Blaney. She was toasty. Trousers, fleece and coat from mountain warehouse.

Boden

Or Patagonia.

Land's End coats are very thick and warm, they're expensive but worth it. I bought one each for my youngest two and both have lasted two winters, still fit and look almost new. I imagine I'll get at least half of what I paid for them on ebay.

CMOTDibbler · 15/02/2021 10:57

Lands End is brilliant for practical coats, and very reasonable in the sale
