So naturally I have dark circles. The added trouble is when I put concealer on (doesn’t matter what brand) it goes on looking like I have dry skin but when I have no make up it doesn’t look dry and doesn’t feel dry when I have no make up on?

My skin is very sensitive around my eyes so have to be careful what I use around them. I am prone to eczema but don’t have any at all a present.

I use Mac Pro longwear concealer at the moment and the foundation.

@BaconAndAvocado
I apply pressed powder after my skin care has properly absorbed. Then powder blusher. Then eye makeup, then lip balm and lipstick.

pensivepigeon · 15/02/2021 11:38

If I have any blemishes I use loose mineral powder foundation to conceal on top of the pressed powder.

bellagogosdead · 15/02/2021 12:19

I find that the more products you use the worse it looks.
Using a tiny bit of aquaphore at night especially on the nose side bits of the eye area improves dryness and make up goes on better.
Then I do like the maybelline eye eraser or bourgeois healthy mix if you can still get it. Don't use too much and try and cover the shadows totally. It always looks weird and doesn't seem to last- there's no point looking great at 8am and then end up with patchy creased makeup by 10.30.

CommanderBurnham · 15/02/2021 12:23

Also concentrate more on covering the outer margins of the dark circles rather than all of it. I find of I do that my eyes look small and weird. Kind of blur the line instead of covering completely, and try and avoid going right up to the lash line.

Also I find a smoky look is more forgiving as it looks like the under eye area is supposed to be dark!

Yes, if you concentrate area close to the tops of your cheeks rather than next to your eyes, it looks more natural.
friendlyflicka · 15/02/2021 19:02

And make sure you have very good mascara because subtle panda eyes increases the problem. I use a tubing mascara and then you don't need to make under eyes totally powdery in order for it to stay put

Whatnamesareleft · 15/02/2021 19:46

I don’t actually have a problem with mascaras or eye liner smudging so I know it definitely isn’t that making the problem worse. I though I had some fix spray but must have binned it so need to get some of that and give that a go before changing brands. I do like the look of the new ysl touch eclait ...

Before you spend a king’s ransom - have you watched any James Welsh tutorials?

It might be that you’re using the wrong product or the wrong technique.

AuntyFungal · 15/02/2021 20:41

Ahhhhh, I ment Robert Welsh (they’re twins!).

Whatnamesareleft · 15/02/2021 21:21

@AuntyFungal is he the guy with dark hair and a scar across his eye brow? If so yes love him. I have just found a sample of the Mac fix and prime spray that I haven’t opened so will be trying that in the morning!

OP posts:
AuntyFungal · 15/02/2021 21:43

Yes he is. If you search, he does a vid specifically on under eye concealer.

Whatnamesareleft · 16/02/2021 08:10

So the setting spray thing hasn’t made any difference at all. Looks the same as every day.

My Charlotte Tilbury Magic Vanish colour corrector arrived yesterday. It's very good. I pat it into my under eye area with my finger and also onto the top of my cheeks.

What I have found to be even better is, after applying eye cream, applying some concealer (I've been using Aldi Lacura, it's amazing!) onto the area and, again, extending it onto my cheeks.
It gives a really bright, fresh look and conceals my dark circles without leaving me looking too "made up" or cakey.

Sorry Charlotte, Aldi just swings it!

Whatnamesareleft · 17/02/2021 14:02

Iv spent so much money online as so many of these brands I can’t get on the shops... one use and they are in the bin as it isn’t the right shade or it’s crap.... I don’t mind expensive brands if it’s good! I don’t know whats wrong with the skin under my eyes? Why does it go patchy? Little patches...

coffee and milk.
Shredded cucumber made into a pate
Vaseling and tumeric.

All of them are working for me, uses the night before still good the next day.
Those concealers and anything with retinol doesn't need to be near your eyes.
Dermatologist told me to keep away from chemicals near the eye.

Zeldaaa · 17/02/2021 22:25

YouTuber Alexandra Anele has quite a few videos showing her dark circle concealing routine/reviewing different products.

I have naturally dark under eyes. Tarte Shape Tape is the best concealer by far.
Maybe OK if you have good skin, if there's any dryness it's really bad for sitting in the fine lines.

^ This. I found Tarte to cake and I don’t even have dry skin.

My holy grail concealer for non-caking is NARS, but I mix two - one is my natural colour Vanilla and the other a couple of tones up and a peachy colour Cafe Au Lait.

Sammysquiz · 18/02/2021 07:15

I haven’t tried it but have seen great reviews for the new Bobbi Brown Eye Base.

It’s this one.

DonLewis · 18/02/2021 07:26

I have started missing some Simple oil in with my moisturiser as a base. Then, when I apply anything under the eyes, its already a bit brighter. I use colour corrected concealer. Currently using a rimmel one that comes with three shades in a pallet. I use the peach one and the lilac one mixed together and dab with a damp egg shaped makeup sponge. Then I use a buffer brush thing to make sure it's even.

For a night out (remember those?) I use Charlotte Tilbury wonder glow and pay special attention to my undereye and above cheek bone area with it. And apply all of the above as normal.

If it's especially bad I use a mac concealer in a much warmer tone than my foundation and blend, blend, blend.

I think I'm on top of it now!

DonLewis · 18/02/2021 07:27

Although, I was chatting to a friend about this and she said the best advice she ever got was to not do anything about it except wear the brightest red lipstick and noone will ever notice your eye circles. I don't do red lipstick so haven't tried it myself...

Whatnamesareleft · 18/02/2021 16:36

Thanks all. I’m wondering if my concealer is a shade to light as it’s seems lighter than my foundation although same shade and range as the Mac foundation. It’s hard to explain. So I can still see dark through the concealer so it looks like grey smudges under my eye sockets (NOT a make up smudging) and it dries patchy

Anyone tried this technique?

I actually don't follow the normal advice and use a concealer darker than my skin tone for the undereyes. Nothing works properly for me, but dark concealer is definitely better than light.

After the RAC man this week assumed that my dad (72) was my husband (I'm 43) Sad I have started watching 'makeup for older women' videos on YouTube. Oh the things that Mizz and Just Seventeen got wrong...

Try HotAndFlashy and Dominique Sachse.

I am personally a HUGE fan of mineral makeup, yes it's powder but it's not like normal powder.
