Teeth...

EleanorRigbyWasReal · 13/02/2021 10:32

Quick one.

It’s not exactly Style & Beauty but... I’ll look a real Bobby-dazzler if my teeth fall apart 😂

So...

Is there anything that can help for lost enamel on teeth? Sensodyne, that kind of thing? Any which actually work? Which is best? Any that genuinely restore enamel, as claimed?

I have decent smile for my age but am seriously considering invasive dental work because of shocking sensitivity. My dentist just gave me a small tube of OralB to try. Did nothing.

Not expecting many replies as not very “glam”.

Sensodyne does work you'd be surprised the effect it has. I've used it in the past. It's only couple of quid worth a go!

notwavingbutdrowning5 · 13/02/2021 11:57

Duraphat toothpaste is recommended by my dentist husband. It’s expensive so he does it on prescription.

Upsetmom · 13/02/2021 12:09

Do you why you have lost the enamel- over brushing, acidic diet etc etc?
Which area of the tooth is the loss- cervical margin (by the gum), biting surface etc etc?

Cuddling57 · 13/02/2021 12:28

Sensodyne Pronemel says it strengthens and gardens enamel.
Works for me. Don't rinse with water during or after cleaning teeth or drink straight away. Just spit out any left in your mouth. I really notice it doesn't work if you rinse with water.
Also no fruit juice or coffee half hour/ hour before cleaning.

EleanorRigbyWasReal · 13/02/2021 15:07

@Upsetmom... I was weened in Tetracycline as a child in the 60’s 70’s due to renal disease and 3 lots of surgery. Sadly, it left me with soft teeth and at aged 21 I had crowns to upper 1/1 2/2 3/3. What I have is sudden onset of sensitivity of bite and “body” of tooth ie. not margins. It’s so bad on one side I cannot eat, “that side”. It’s come on all at once. Don’t understand why in terms of lifestyle, nothings changed. Ageing?

Don’t drink fruit juices.
Never rinse mouth after brushing with electric Oral B brush.
Never clean teeth after fruit (eat a lot of fruit).
Use Corsodyl Original Mouthwash between washes/before bed.

Drink tea but never drink coffee or fizzy drinks.

Seeing my dentist again in March. Will ask about Duraphat.

I actually found Colgate Total worked better for my sensitivity than any of the Sensodyne. Not sure any reason why, but it was included in a list of toothpastes good for sensitivity and trying them all out, it worked best for me.

I also have prescription Duraphat - on my previous dentist's instructions, I brush with my normal toothpaste and then apply a tiny amount to the area affected (for me, it's my lower left jaw) before going to bed at night so it sits there all night. It has helped with the sensitivity. I also seems to helped somewhat with enamel, though not for one tooth that just seems very unlucky in that it's had fillings pop out twice in the last year... (last time while flossing, it felt like the most ridiculous thing).

NavyBerry · 13/02/2021 16:30

Biorepair products and Curaprox toothbrushes

Justkeeprollingalong · 13/02/2021 16:55

This is the only one that worked on my super sensitive teeth (due to enamel loss). I use whichever of the variants is on offer.

Justkeeprollingalong · 13/02/2021 16:56

The photo didn't load.
It's Colgate Sensitive Pro Relief.

simonthedog · 13/02/2021 16:59

Nothing can replace lost enamel. Sensitive toothpastes can help with sensitivity. I think Sensodyne rapid relief is the best one.

frugalkitty · 13/02/2021 22:01

You can try rubbing some sensitive toothpaste onto the teeth before bed. I do this on my front teeth when they get extra sensitive. The Colgate total one is good or the pronamel one (sensodyne?) My eldest son had problems with enamel on his baby teeth and was given the Duraphat mentioned up thread.

Try biomin - it’s got a ton of research behind it and it’s really good. Also look at cod liver oil and high vitamin butter oil as supplements - basically you need vitamin D and K

DishedUp · 14/02/2021 01:03

Nothing will replace lost enamel.

Have you had a dental check up recently? Because that sounds quite extreme and could be decay rather than sensitivity. You need to see your dentist, it could also be a failing restoration if you have a number of crowns

You also need to address the cause, tetracycline causes staining not softening of the enamel. What is it thats causing you to lose enamel? How much fruit are we talking? Do you drink fruit teas? Have their been periods of your life when you've been sick a lot? E.g. hyperemesis. Again see your dentist, have a chat.

Failing that sensitivity usually doesn't require invasive dental work. A simple layer of filling material over the exposed dentine normally solves it. Generally if you need invasive dental work you need invasive dental work and a bit of sensodyne isn't going to cut it

TaraR2020 · 14/02/2021 01:10

I have enamel loss on a tooth, it's not sensitive but the dentine is exposed, dentist recommended Tooth Mousse.

BusterGonad · 14/02/2021 03:04

If I were you I'd be rubbing the toothpaste on before bed and do not rinse or use mouthwash after brushing.

Cuddling57 · 14/02/2021 09:26

I've had another thought. Do you get indigestion? The acid from this can ruin teeth.

EleanorRigbyWasReal · 14/02/2021 18:41

Lots of replies. Thanks.

Yes, the dentist told me to do the toothpaste rub before bed. I keep a small tube in my handbag too. No, I don’t have indigestion or vomiting, for any reason. Dentist also felt I could be a night time “grinder” which might be wearing my teeth down. I’ve no way of knowing. DH sleeps like the dead 😂

Yes, saw the dentist who gave me Flagyl for 5 days. No difference really. I see her again in March. I do take various vitamin supplements and Omega 369.

I take statins, Aspirin (only recently) anti hypertension meds, beta blockers.

Even when running, I’ve noticed I have to keep my mouth closed as if I forget, it’s painful.

Have bought the Sensodyn today as am coming to the end of the Colgate one I’d tried. The Corsodyl is strong stuff but have used it years.

When I say a lot of fruit I mean 3/4 pieces daily.

If the dentist gave you flagyl then they obviously thought this was an infection not sensitivity? You don't give antibiotics for sensitivity, they also won't work for decay or a leaking restoration. Go back to your dentist now and get them to check your teeth and advise you. Identify the teeth that are sensitive and treat them. They also need to do a diet diary and identify the cause of toothwear

If they think you are grinding, which is a source of toothwear, they need to provide you with a bite guard.

If you are needing to rub sensitive toothpaste on all the time that is quite extreme for sensitivity and to me suggests something more is going on. I would only settle for sensitivity in that situation if you've ruled out other causes of pain.

Supplements will do bugger all

EleanorRigbyWasReal · 14/02/2021 20:56

Thanks @DishedUp

The flagyl didn’t work. I have one crown which is 32+ yrs old. The margin has had it but because you not see it when I smile, dentist won’t replace as she says it’s “cosmetic” and Denplan won’t cover it. I’ve been in Denplan for 14 yrs so, have the hygienist every three months and dental checkup every six months. I’m 60 next year and have had these crown all my life. They’re OLD 😂. I have no other dental problems with the other crowns but this one bleeds, the gum’s always swollen and sore and it’s a royal pain in the ass. Dentist spoke to me on Friday and says it might be an abscess (long running).

I just want the thing sorting. I really do look after my mouth. Always have.
