Hair colour questions! (Going grey)

A couple of questions about my hair for anyone with experience.

  1. After restrictions ease I am itching to get it coloured properly. I'm dark brown but very slowly starting to go grey (aged 40). I don't mind a few long greys blended in in the bulk of my hair but am not liking the more obvious clusters of grey ones at my temples - there seem to be more greys there and I don't want to end up looking like Olivia Coleman in the Crown season 4...!

So ideally I'd like to blend in some other colours, eg ash, lighter cool browns etc, highlight, lowlights..not sure if the terminology. I suit cooler colours. So not covering the greys but equally not allowing them to stand out like a sore thumb.

Question 1 is, has anyone with dark brown European hair achieved this?

  1. Question 2, can anyone in London recommend an excellent colourist? I'm willing to pay a bit more ££, but I'm not an oligarch and I imagine I'd need to keep going back, so nothing too £££.

Thanks!

  1. My hair is dark mouse naturally and I suit warmer colours. I used to have it coloured copper with blonde highlights around the front. Realised in lockdown 1 that a fair bit of grey is coming through and I don't want to be a slave to roots so I opted to live with the greys and grow out the base colour. My hairdresser put a smattering of gold and copper highlights through the front and top of my hair (my hair is short). It works fine but I don't have any big clusters of grey as yet so not sure how well it would work in breaking those up. Otherwise she uses a glossing treatment so the greys really shine and act as highlights in themselves.
  1. Not in London.

I actually went full grey from darkest brown seven years ago . I personally went the cold turkey chop it off route but I understand what you're saying. The only trouble with having colour put through is that any bleaching will pull towards the warmer colours . I tried to have ashy streaks put through mine to soften the demarcation line but they ended up a tweety pie yellow as soon as the ash toner wore off which was pretty quickly. Then I was left with warm yellow tones which didn't suit my skin tone at all so I was spending a fortune on toning them back to ash . They were a big factor in the chopping off of my length. The grey however is obviously cool and suits me way better. It is possible to streak to grey definitely but it's a constant challenge to keep the yellow out of it . They even sell permanent grey box dyes in Boots now because it's so popular with the younger girls .

@Vicliz24 thank you. Yes the yellow / brass is definitely what I want to avoid. I'm always looking forward toners you can use at home. I think the main reason I'm not keen on going 100% natural route is the uneven spread of the greys. I think I might start to look like a badger in the next 5 years!

Honestly @LockdownLocks I'm not an all over grey . I have very badger-ish parts . I have come to appreciate the stripes as growing up and when coloured my hair was a flat single colour . I've never had variations before .
