Am desperate for hair colour. Have NEVER done it myself. Ever.

I have highlighted/low lighted bra strap length hair.

I’m afraid of a disaster but wonder what’s the most disaster free at home hair colour I can buy.

Thanks

I use olia but I don't know about using it over hi/low lights.

Whichever one you use, do a patch test.

MoltonSilver · 10/02/2021 23:09

Buy a semi permanent. I've had good results with L'oreal Castings creme gloss but home colours always seem darker than expected so I'd suggest starting with a lighter semi than you think you need.

EleanorRigbyWasReal · 11/02/2021 09:06

@JaneJeffer... that’s the problem, the unknown, isn’t it? Previous colour on hair. Though, I can’t imagine there are many women over 50 who’ve NEVER had colour done. Might be wrong.

Thanks for the tips. Will have a read of semi permanent reviews.

And yes, have a list of drug allergies to my credit so, will definitely do a patch test 😉

I sympathise OP - my last appointment was in December and I normally have my roots done every 3 weeks so you can imagine how it looks now! My hairdresser was adamant that DIY home colour is not a good idea because when you eventually go back to them, they have to strip it off before doing what they normally do, and it's very expensive! I am using the L'Oreal Magic Retouch which is a spray and does cover well once you have got the hang of it. I have darkish highlighted hair and find the Golden Blonde is quite dark enough for me. It's only £8.99 (or £12 for 2 at Boots) - might be worth giving it a try?

@MagicSummer... thank you for the tip. I’ll have a look at that.

I’m thinking anything I do will need a good deal of correction.

A friend with blonde highlights swears by colour wow. It looks good on Zoom

I bragged shamelessly about my home dye job on here last month OP. I'm 90% grey and bought a Demi permanent Aveda colour from Ebay (which is what they use at my hairdressers). It's lasted well so far (5 weeks in). For context, I hadn't had it done since August because of various COVID issues. Never done it before, but I watched lots of tutorials and instructed DH accordingly Grin

Don’t know if it helps but I’ve found that picking a lighter shade than you think as the previous poster said, and halving the time they suggest gives me a colour that sits with my skin tones and doesn’t look dyed.

Otherplans · 11/02/2021 22:20

@nowlook which shade Aveda demi was it? Looks amazing

nowlook · 11/02/2021 22:25

Thanks @Otherplans! It's 8N. Note, it's just the roots (which you'll be able to see is about 2.5 inches on the photo). The rest is my existing highlights. I'm not for messing with highlights!

Can you speak to your hairdresser and ask for advice? My hairdresser offered to mix me a colour using product she knew would agree with my hair and give instruction (small charge ££).

I actually decided not to do it but thought that might be safer if I was going to do anything at all.

EleanorRigbyWasReal · 12/02/2021 19:34

Just managed to get back to the thread. Thanks for the replies!

I’m wondering what happens to the highlights I have? If my hair’s one colour with home dying, what happens to the high/lowlights? Sorry, I’m being a bit thick.

Some websites offer a “Try it On” feature but the ones I chose all look “off” somehow.

Will get in touch with my hairdresser after the weekend, I think.
