Curly toddler hair

My DD has developed her father's beautiful curly hair, but it's starting to get a bit wild, especially when she's just woke up.

At the moment we just Child's Farm 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner

Can anyone recommend any child friendly products to use on it?
Has anyone used and can recommend the "my little coco" range? Or is that for more full/tight curls?

I've attached photos to show her hair

No experience with toddler hair but I know cantu do a baby range so that could be worth a try. Cantu is generally aimed at very curly / Natural hair but I use is on my thick wavy hair and don't find it to heavy.

MsSquiz · 08/02/2021 20:22

Thanks. I've heard of cantu, but didn't realise they do a baby range too Smile

I put Argan oil on my dds hair, rub it through dry hair I’m the morning to encourage curls rather than fizz.

shhsecretsquirrel · 08/02/2021 20:48

Following!! My DS hair is beautiful just dried but in the morning is a wild frizz ball!! I've ordered some childs farm leave in curl concoction so will report back on that on Thursday but watching for any other suggestions

3 curlies in our family and we follow the curly girl method.

No silicones, sulphates or drying alcohols.

Hair is cleansed with a curly girl friendly conditioner and then drenched in more conditioner. I don’t use any styling product on the kids as I don’t think they need it.

There is a CGM kids Facebook group.

shhsecretsquirrel · 08/02/2021 20:53

@Wigglegiggle0520 so no shampoo?

foodtoorder · 08/02/2021 20:54

Like you I use the children's farm shampoo but for mornings I use my little coco (available in boots) there is a feta going spray or curling custard. I don't use both at the same time and they work as well as each other in my child's hair.
Either spray and brush through and scrunch or brush through hair and add curling custard with fingers and scrunch.
Neither leaves any residue just cure defined curls.

foodtoorder · 08/02/2021 20:54

Sorry that should say detangling spray.

Wigglegiggle0520 · 08/02/2021 21:52

@shhsecretsquirrel yep no shampoo at all. You can use a low poo shampoo but there probably isn’t a need to on children.

You need to give the scalp a good massage for 5 minutes to loosen the dirt or you can use a scalp brush.

I only comb the kids hair when wet and wet it each morning with a mix of water and conditioner sprayed on.

I only ‘wash’ their hair once a week.

Curly hair needs loads of moisture so I use a lot more conditioner than expected. Lorraine Massey has several books on the CGM including one for kids.

My DD is 5 and I didn't realise she had curly hair I just thought it was frizzy 🤦‍♀️

I use conditioner when I wash her hair twice a week and really scrub her scalp. I use a little dap of curl creme after I wash her hair. My DD has thick hair I was bringing her to the hairdressers every 6/8 weeks to get a trim and layers as curly hair sits better with layers.

I use water and detangling spray mixed together to do her hair every day and use a brush for curly hair. I start from the bottom up. I wet her hair every day as it gets very knotty and frizzy if I leave it for a few days. I wet her hair very lightly through out the day as curly hair needs moisture. This is a picture of her hair the next day after it's washed

As long as the shampoo is gentle It shouldn't matter that much, but I would stop using a 2 in 1. Curls needs LOADS of moisture so I would get a proper conditioner.

Make sure you never dry brush her hair. Comb conditioner through in the bath/shower so you detangle, and then rinse the conditioner out. Let it air dry if possible. Don't brush/comb it at any other time.

This is my dd’s hair. She’s 10 this weekend.
Curls appeared as she turned one and have been there ever since. We’ve always used Curly Kids spray and concentrated on conditioner more than shampoo although we use both. Over the years we have tried everything including Child’s Farm but I wasn’t overly impressed with it. Currently using L’Oreal kids shampoo and conditioner in Strawberry which is brilliant and only use a proper Tangle Tamer brush on it, the original version that looks like a regular brush, not the teaser which is funny shaped.

Dd now likes to wash her own hair and is meticulous with it thankfully. Now and again she gets little “dreadlocks” that I have to get out which has caused many hysterics over the years but she’s better now she’s older.

One thing we’ve never used is a hairdryer. The curls are still coming thick and fast and she has grown to love them. Her hair tends to grow outwards so is super thick and for school she always just has a pony tail as it’s much easier and she’s never had nits. I dread the day when this happens!

Absolutely no help at all, just wanted to say my two little nephews have gloriously curly long hair! Luckily neither of their parents wants to cut the hair!

shhsecretsquirrel · 09/02/2021 21:39

@ilovetea14 you dd hair is beautiful!! Hair goals for my ds!! We have a bit of growing to do first though!

shhsecretsquirrel · 09/02/2021 21:40

@Wigglegiggle0520 thank you - I will investigate the brush as there's no way he'll let me at his scalp for 5 mins!! Thank you and sorry to hijack the thread OP!

MadameButterface · 09/02/2021 21:48

Curly girl method is fine, little kids don’t get sweaty like we do so they don’t really need shampoo unless they’ve got something grim on themselves.

You can make your own detangling spray with just a tony blob of conditioner in a spray water bottle, shook up until it’s emulsified. If you put a few drops of lavender or tea tree oil in it will help repel nits.

Silk or satin pillowcases are the best thing for avoiding toddler crazy bed head matting, but i know it seems a bit indulgent 😁 what you could do is get two big silk or satin scarves as cheap as possible (in normal times charity shops have loads, and primark do nice ones) and sew them together to make a tube that you stick round their pillow. Then you’ve got a cheap tangleproof pillow and if they’re midnight barfers like my toddlers were it’s not the end of the world. I know it’s faffy 😁

Greendoonan · 09/02/2021 21:55

I put a small amount of my adult curl products on my 4yo daughter’s hair. Mild baby shampoo, Aussie conditioner then a little dab of Frizz Ease serum.

MsSquiz · 10/02/2021 12:50

Thanks for all of the replies! Lots to think about. She's inherited his curls and my thick, frizzy, fast growing hair! A lethal combination!

I don't ever brush it, it doesn't ever get tatty yet. But have been shampoo & conditioning, so will change that up.
It's mainly just so it's not so wild. She has beautiful curls before bed, before she constantly wriggles and moves around her cot!

This might be controversial, but we abandoned all "children's" products years ago.

Agree with others - very little shampoo. And use one for very dry/curly hair.

Instead of regular conditioner, as we only wash DD's hair every 7-10 days, we use a treatment - currently KMS Tamefrizz one. Comb/brush it through. Then after rinsing I put a little regular conditioner on her hair that I've watered down.

We use All That I Am leave in conditioner on a day to do day basis but it IS annoying as you need to wet the hair to apply it. Palmers do a couple of good leave in conditioner sprays that are great for combing it out in the mornings but DD doesn't like the way they smell.

She has not had a professional hair cut in a couple of years as she was very resistant and then Covid. I'm desperate to get to a hairdresser with her to get some decent layers in. When I cut it myself i try to put a couple in but I am not an expert and don't want to mess around.

The frizz is a constant battle. I'm planning to get her silk pillowcases. The problem is also that DH doesn't put product in daily so unless I do it, lack of product builds up and that's a problem.
