If you only wash your hair once a week

So I only wash my hair once a week as it takes around 1 hour to wash and around d 6 hours to dry (thick curly long hair). I do curly girl so use sulphate/silicone free oroducts. If I wash it any more frequently, it gets dried out. I actually out leave in conditioner I the ends every day - it is the Sahara!
However, by about day 5, I feel like it doesn't smell very nice - a definite "scalp" smell.
Can anyone recommend me anything to rub into my scalp that smells nice and is CG friendly?

Lorraine talking about oils.

If you google Lorraine Massey lavender spray there is an image from her book explaining how to make it. A cup of water and a few drops of oil. You don’t use it neat.

As a PP said try joining the Facebook group and use the search function to see if anyone has had the same issue.

QueenPawPaws · 06/02/2021 21:08

To be fair it takes me about 20 mins to wash and then apply products, 45-60 mins diffusing and then another few hours for it to finish drying
There are some dry shampoos that are safe, I'll have a look now

QueenPawPaws · 06/02/2021 21:11

pantene foam dry shampoo
Klorane oat milk (non aerosol)

Busybee453 · 06/02/2021 21:17

Sorry forgot to mention the deep cleaning shampoo I use once a week to clarify is this from Boots:
www.boots.com/boots-expert-build-up-removal-shampoo-200ml-10247057

It is quite drying so you may not need it as frequently as I do (I just find this works for me) and I just remember to deep condition after. It’s important to massage it into your scalp so it removes all the build up on the scalp

What about olive oil and tea tree or peppermint essential oil sprayed onto your scalp between washes?

SirenSays · 06/02/2021 21:22

Anything by Maui or Bumble and Bumble, everything they make smells devine.
Cocoa powder is a really bizarre shade on hair, Brad Mondo reviewed this hack in a YouTube video. I'd avoid. Batiste dry shampoo is dirt cheap and a better colour imo.
I'd avoid pure oils too, especially coconut, I'd swap to a cocoabutter deep conditioner.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 06/02/2021 21:29

Bumble & bumble are such a good brand

picklemewalnuts · 06/02/2021 21:34

@AliceinBunniland do you think OP would be going through this rather elaborate routine, if washing every other day with whatever brand worked for her?

She's got to this point because people's more usual regimes don't work on her hair.

BeaSmithers · 06/02/2021 21:48

So, your choices mean it takesan hour to wash and 6 hours to dry. Do you really need to do all those stages when you wash it? Can't you just buy a decent shampoo and conditioner? Why not blitz it with the hairdryer on a warm setting?

The thought of washing hair only once a week makes me want to hurl 😱

AliceinBunniland · 06/02/2021 21:49

@picklemewalnuts OP said the routine is long and exhausting hence why she doesn't wash her hair more, not that she can't or that he hair wouldn't respond to more frequent washing.

More to the point, OP asked for opinions and some of us gave them. Personally I think if your hair smells / is dirty then that's the priority over it being completely frizz free, not that the two are necessarily mutually exclusive, but each to their own.

To be fair, being on mumsnet has made me realise people often DO make life difficult for themselves

JMAngel1 · 06/02/2021 21:53

Blitz it with a hairdryer on a low setting?????

Sorry, but you clearly have no clue about curly hair.

QueenPawPaws · 06/02/2021 22:13

@BeaSmithers shampoo ruins my hair which is why I use conditioner or a co wash
I diffuse my hair and it takes 45-60 mins, if you dry on a high speed/heat it creates frizz, so I use low speed, medium heat. That gets it about 70% dry then I air dry the rest

Justanotherfaceinthecrowd · 06/02/2021 22:19

Same here. An hour to wash my hair in sections and condition and run through. Have no tips per se but watching with intrest!
All those who wonder how it takes so long, or accuse us of exaggerating are just jelous 🙄
Long and big hair is some serious dedication!

Chanandlerbong01 · 06/02/2021 22:20

The boots shampoo mentioned above isn’t cg friendly.

Isitcg.com is really useful to check ingredients quickly.

Jealous? Really! 🙄
tabulahrasa · 06/02/2021 22:23

Have you tried co-washing between washes? Or a full wet but no washing refresh?

That way you can skip a lot of the moisturising stages as you’re not washing those out the same...

tabulahrasa · 06/02/2021 22:24

By co-washing I do mean with conditioner btw, not a product designed for it.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 06/02/2021 22:28

Oh behave, no one is jealous
Op described a process with time sequences, she’s not washing for 60min

Op described
Brush5 minutes..
Condition at least 15 minutes.
Then detangling can take at least 10 minutes
deep conditioner on for at least 15 minutes,
= 45minutes

Chanandlerbong01 · 06/02/2021 22:32

This thread has cost me a fortune!

What do you use to clarify it?

Nearlytherenext · 06/02/2021 22:37

Sorry if this is ignorant.

But have you considered a Brazilian blow dry? It might help make your hair more manageable and allow you to wash it more frequently perhaps?

Chanandlerbong01 · 06/02/2021 22:42

@Nearlytherenext are they not for straightening your hair?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 06/02/2021 22:43

Missing the point but amazed it dries in 6 hours. Unless I'm abroad mine is too thick to dry naturally and I need to use the hair dryer on the nape of my neck, as I get dermatitis when it's wet for too long. A diffuser on the hairdryer helps. I don't do CH, I'm only a 2b or 2c, but avoid silicone and never wash more than twice a week. I used to rub a bit of talc into the roots back in the days before dry shampoo existed.
