What do you use currently, OP? The first thing you should do is get a stand alone broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF of at least 30 and preferably 50. This will prevent further damage and allow you to use others products that help with signs of ageing but make the skin more sensitive to light. Broad spectrum means it protects from UVA light as well as UVB. UVA is what causes ageing and is equally strong in winter, and is not blocked by glass, so you should wear sunscreen indoors and in winter.

I just use Liz Earle moisturiser.
I understand the need for the SPF but am concerned that something that thick would give me spots, like the face sunscreen I use on holiday.

Lots of light ones out there. The thing is it's that they tend to be expensive and you have to use quite a lot (2.5 ml a day for face and neck is what I use, not including top ups if I'm out in the sun, but I've seen 2.5 ml suggested for face alone). I use Heliocare mineral, which is very light and not greasy. La Roche Posay shaka fluid is a light chemical one (and it's cheaper and often on offer). The good stuff for anti-aging can't be used without sunscreen because they increase your skin's sensitivity to UV light so you'd be doing more damage if you're not blocking that.

There's frezyderm velvet, Clinique mineral (tiny bottle), Clinique city block (doesn't go up to factor 50), Avene mineral, biore watery essence, purita something or other (might not be actually factor 50 at all, it's a bit of a problem with sunscreens that they might not be all they say they are and this one was revealed in tests to be only spf19). Bioderma and Eucerin are other brands that might be worth looking at.

It's easily the thing I spend the most money on, and it's a challenge to find one that's affordable and doesn't sting or break you out.

To take it off in the evening a lot of people use an oil or balm cleanser to dissolve it and follow that with a water based cleanser to clean the skin. I just use my gentle cleanser twice because my sunscreen isn't oily.

Can recommend Eucerin Anti-Pigment Spot Corrector at night with a high factor SPF every day. You have to use it consistently and be patient.

I've seen a difference after 1.5 months. Read reviews. Some haven't seen a change. You've just got to try one and keep it up. It's a gradual treatment.

Just noticed this too: www.lookfantastic.com/eucerin-anti-pigment-spf30-day-cream-50ml/12034025.html
I haven't tried it, but might be worth a look

Yes you need SPF before worrying about moisturisers tbh.

Vit C serum has been great for evening out my skin tone - I had some melasma on my top lip (it honestly looked like a tache and I had to use concealer every day) and since using that it has gradually faded and gone completely now.

I use sunscreen every day now.

I meant to say your daily sunscreen doesn't have to be hugely water resistant and sweat proof, so that helps a lot with how heavy or sticky it is.
