Looking for help advice on covering grey 'roots'

After having let DS2 help me cut my hair last week to get rid of split ends have now set myself (and DS1) the task of getting rid of my grey roots.

I have only had 1 cut and colour since this time last year as had an appointment for mid Nov which obviously didn't happen due to lockdown so my dark roots are a little more than just roots.

I have bought the colour and an application kit but am looking for advice on how to apply.

The instructions say if you have had a colour in the last 6-12 weeks then just do the roots but if you are colouring for the first time then use it on the whole head of hair. I don't fit into either of these categories but am somewhere in the middle.

I'm tempted to focus on the roots and then comb what's left through the rest of it which is what my hairdresser seems to do.

Any hints or tips will be very gratefully received as I've never done it myself before and am quite nervous 😬

It sounds right. Roots first and then the rest after 10-20 minutes or whatever the instructions say. It’ll be fine. What colour are you doing it?

Coffeepot72 · 06/02/2021 08:01

I use Wella Colour Fresh, it’s semi permanent, lasts about a fortnight and this covers about 70% of my grey - if you’re nervous, this might work for you, because even if you had a disaster with it, it would be gone in a few weeks?

Thanks for the tips. I have bought a Josh Wood permanent colour no 8 plus an ice blond shot after reading other threads on here. Having not chosen before I liked the way the web site took you through the colour choice decision although it was a bit pricy. Not as much as having it done for me though so if it works out ok it may save me some money in the long run.

I though about something temporary but I don't want to have to keep doing it so often so decided to take the plunge. If it doesn't work out it doesn't matter as I never go anywhere anyway. Just doing it for me and as an experiment.

Hope We both manage to stay calm. Teenagers can be a bit temperamental if you tell them they are doing it wrong 🤣

Are you sure it says only to do it on the roots? Most say if you've previous colour, do roots first, leave for 20 mins and then colour the rest and leave for another 10 (or whatever time the instructions say). If you only do the roots it won't be the same colour as the rest of your hair?

Keep us posted, OP!

@RockingMyFiftiesNot that was my worry about just doing the roots. In the end we did the (long) roots and then combed/pulled it through the rest. I think if I did it again I would save a bit more for the second stage as my hair is very curly and it was hard to comb enough through to the ends to cover it.

Greys are gone, the colour is darker than I expected so maybe it was left on a bit too long on the roots but overall I am happy with our first attempt.

Looks like a stray long bit at the back needs a trim but overall not a bad team effort.

Colour looks fab!

It looks excellent with the darker root. I love it!

EscapeTheCastle · 06/02/2021 14:47

Looks great! Well done team!

LadyWithLapdog · 06/02/2021 20:03

Looks good. Gorgeous curls.

Great hair. With your curls it has a look of balayage about it. Give the ds's a tip.

LittleGungHo · 06/02/2021 20:24

I used to do home dye and found the easiest way to apply was with a cheap hair dye brush and plastic pot and the paint it on the roots in sections. Like hairdressers do.

Otherwise join us Silver Sisters and embrace the Silver. I have not dyed my hair for 11 months and love it. I am 33 years old.

Mumski45 · 06/02/2021 20:50

@LittleGungHo that's how we did it as I have watched hairdresser doing it that way. I bought a cheap dish and brush set off Amazon and DS1 watched a few YouTube's vids.

I have thought about embracing the grey and going natural but when I saw the original colour coming through I didn't really like it.
