I have 4/5k to spend on an upgraded engagement ring??

And I have no idea what I want Blush

I’ve recently been given a small inheritance of just over 4K and Dh has decided we need to upgrade my engagement ring, as I want something to remember my aunt by. I can possibly but another 1k towards it.

I’ve looked at Tiffany and you don’t seem to get very good value for money, loved the Vera Wang designs but the diamond quality was poor.

Who else can I look at and what style do I want?

Sorry, did I read right - it's your inheritance and he has decided you need to spend it on an upgraded engagement ring?

Kittykat93 · 05/02/2021 20:31

Why do you need to spend 5k on a ring?? It's your inheritance how about spending it on something more useful, not really your husbands decision to make is it 🤷‍♀️

TokyoSushi · 05/02/2021 20:33

Yes also just checking that's really what you want to do with the money...

BeautyQueenIamNot · 05/02/2021 20:34

Well it wasn’t just his decision, he asked me what I wanted and said a new ring he agreed 🤷‍♀️

We could spend it on the house but I want something for me

Erm. Maybe keep YOUR inheritance for something YOU want to spend your money on.
It's not for him to decide.

BeautyQueenIamNot · 05/02/2021 20:35

I think I worded that wrong Blush I offered to give him half the money but he refused and said to get something I wanted

In that case, diamonds = Hatton Gardens.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 05/02/2021 20:36

I would buy a decent watch instead, a far better investment if you buy the right one. Diamonds are a pretty bad investment tbh.

BeautyQueenIamNot · 05/02/2021 20:37

@BrilliantBetty I’m guessing nothing is open because of Covid??

@BeautyQueenIamNot check out Katherine james jewellery. It’s amazingly special and very unique, the jewels are of a very high quality and they are very bespoke. Worth the ££

mistermagpie · 05/02/2021 20:38

Buy what you want obviously but you could get a stonking good ring for three grand and have money left over!

Tiffany you are paying for the name, if that's important to you then go for it but you will get more for your money elsewhere.

I have three diamond rings, all were designed and stones chosen/made in places at Hatton garden. They were all certified diamonds abc great value for money.

Luckyonetwo · 05/02/2021 20:39

Have you thought about having one made off an independent jeweller? IMO you get a lot more for your money.

mistermagpie · 05/02/2021 20:39

The most recent was all done online due to Covid btw.

user1465423698 · 05/02/2021 20:39

Jewellery is not even worth what you pay for it. None of it is value for money.

Mustardbay · 05/02/2021 20:43

We went to Birmingham jewellery Quarter for mine, I think the place I got mine from is open but you have to make an appointment so I guess its the same for the others too.

mistermagpie · 05/02/2021 20:43

It's value for money if you value it. I love my jewellery so it's worth the money, whether it is actually 'worth' the money or not.

Kaftankween · 05/02/2021 20:44

Ruth Tomlinson does lovely, unusual rings.

Mixingitall · 05/02/2021 20:47

I got mine from this site and am really happy with it. The chap was easy to deal with too:

Thank you, I’m off to spend some time on google looking at the recommendations.

It will be good value for me, as it’s something I will treasure and love and pass onto my daughter.

mistermagpie · 05/02/2021 20:48

I feel the same. My daughter will get mine so it has long term value to me.

GerardWay123 · 05/02/2021 20:49

If you want a ring buy a vintage (second hand) one. More bang for your bucks that way.

2021hastobebetter · 05/02/2021 20:51

Go and have a look at antiques shops when they are open and bargain with cash

That what I did for my engagement ring was 20 K in an antiques shop got it for much less for cash

addicted2spaniels · 05/02/2021 20:51

I lost the solitaire from my engagement twice, and the insurance company recommended a new ring as the clasp was poorly designed. But I had to choose from their own supplier and I hated the replacement ring I had.

So when DH got an inheritance very unexpectedly, he said about upgrading my ring to one that I loved. I didn't need asking twice! We went to a local jeweller (not a chain) and they were great. I tried loads of different styles on and we ended up spending around £3.5k on it. I wouldn't take a chance buying online, that's how I chose my insurance ring and when it was valued independently, it was nothing like the £2.5k the insurance said it cost........

I love looking at the antique jewellery on Berganza's website.

Sorry to be nosey, but do you have a good pension and savings? I ask because I'm early 50s and really regret the money I frittered away on clothes and jewellery. I would much rather have it in the bank so I can retire at 55 or 60. Instead I'll be working to 67 and beyond.
