Eyeliner

I'm 34 and today I decided to treat myself to a purplish black eyeliner. I used to wear quite colourful eye make up when I was a teenager and at uni so I thought I'd have a go. What a mistake, I look so old. It genuinely really upset me to see myself in the mirror and see tired, lined skin and eyes that look sad. I don't feel attractive at all, anymore. Not sure what I'm asking but it just hit that I look, not young.

Possibly the purple tone in it? Those colours make me look like I've had no sleep or had a black eye.

I think you definitely should be able to get away with those colours at 34, 54 maybe pushing it. Watch Bailey Sarian on Facebook/insta for some inspiration. Maybe the style in which you used it wasn’t right.

Thanks. I was just so shocked at my skin close up. I seemed to have aged so much and nothing looks right. I'm going to spend the day slathering moisturiser on and then I'll try again tomorrow.

Glycolic acid AHA and retinol are your new friends now

Did you use foundation as well? I find wearing colour on my eye doesn’t look right if I don’t have foundation on too.
I would say wearing the same make up as you did when you were a teen is the same as trying on the same clothes or having the same hairstyle - it’s not that you’re old, maybe the style has just become a bit old.
Smokey eyes were a big thing when I was teen and I don’t think they are now so it would look a bit odd and old if I did that now. Maybe look at some make-up tutorials online to see what’s in style and what you think would suit you.

I've just gone on Amazon and ordered 50 quid worth of Olay Regenerist. Bloody hell, what has my life come to. I get what you mean about styles etc, I just thought I'd feel like "me" with it but instead I looked like an unrecognisable version of myself which really alarmed me and YES I know it's first world problems...

Skin is best sorted from the inside. Healthy foods, plenty of water and good sleep.

Cornetttttto · 06/02/2021 19:51

I do all the above but unfortunately I am my mother's daughter and her face sagged from 40 onwards. It's the absolute curse of being thin in that you look haggard.

Well I am 61 (reels with shock herself, I thought I was still a teenager!). I find mostly neutral eye colours -mostly grey or a brown-still smoky eye- suit me. All the colours I used to love! I still love the pinks and mauves I used to use. However, all those Urban Decay warm bronzes etc etc nope. They make my eyes red!

Deathraystare · 09/02/2021 09:44

Oops we were talking about eye liner . I also find I can only wear black, brown or gray. I have a number of coloured ones including plum but they look garish to me now (and I love colour!). I can still get away with navy kohl though.

Squeejit · 09/02/2021 09:47

I think it would be the purpley tones. They tend to drain the colour from me. A warmer brown or grey would be more flattering.
Also second drinking lots of water. It really makes a difference to your skin.

I look haggard and old in eyeliner. I think I always did even when I was younger as I'm v pale. Maybe you could try a very subtle hint, so tight lining very close to the lashes, and not doing the bottom. That's all that works for me.
