Where did you get your best black t-shirt from?

Just that really. My wardrobe desperately needs new black t-shirts (both a long-sleeve and a short-sleeve one). I can't seem find anything that meets my criteria - v-neck, properly long-sleeve (not 3/4 length) and sits on your hip bone. Not boxy but not tight either. One that washes well and keeps its shape.
Where did you get your staple tee from?

Lands' End. They're not V-neck though but I won't wear 3/4 length sleeves.
For normal short sleeve t-shirts, Uniqlo.

Gap

I have a lovely long sleeve black t from Pure. My favourite short sleeve one is actually a tencel one from Peacocks - not somewhere I usually shop, but I love this one

And baukjen.

(None are v necks - I don't like v-necks. However, I'm sure they do v-necks.)

Pigtailsandall · 02/02/2021 08:55

@thecatfromjapan yes my favourite white t-shirt is from all saints! My only complaint is that it's just a tad too short - just a few cm would make a difference. However, it's the best fit so far from all my t-shirts so will order that one if all else fails.

Gap looks good @NoZoomAtTheInn I don't buy much stuff from Gap, although DC has some hand-me-downs. Do they wash well? I want something long-lasting

Baukjen looked good for other stuff (which I'm not meant to look at) but no v-necks unfortunately

pig - they’ve lasted me for years. Good value to because if you sign up to gap, they’ll be bombarding you with offers. I always buy with a discount. My only complain is that they don’t do plain colours - for plain they stick to black, white and grey. Which is great for basics (and ideal for you) but they are so good I would love it if they made them in a bigger range of plain colours

Pigtailsandall · 04/02/2021 11:56

Thanks all for suggestions. I found the ideal v-neck t-shirt from Saint + Sofia. Haven't ordered yet - was wondering if anyone has any experience on how well they last/wash. At £40 I want it to wash very well! I have a messy child so everything I wear goes in the laundry daily...

Also what is the for like - true to size?
Thank you Smile

Scoop neck rather than V-neck but have recently bought a black ribbed t-shirt from la Redoute that fits the criteria for long sleeve, fitted but not too tight and ends on the hip bone. I don't know why I still order things from there as I send most of it back, but the t-shirt is just right - I ordered it in white too.

I also bought a lot of cotton t-shirts from Esprit last year.

Katiepoes · 04/02/2021 12:28

I have crew necks from Saint & Sofia, I like them a lot. It's a heavy slightly stretchy fabric that does not cling, I find the fit true to size, I am 1m 76 and they end just on the top of my hip bones, I have big boobs (75G) and carry weight on my middle and these skim that dodgy bit well for me. Mine are size L.

I have black, cream and pink, all three wash really well. The black one has been washed the most as it's worn weekly, the shape and shade are still great. They also don't need ironing Grin

Ghost, about 20 years ago, and it's still going strong.

MarieAnneLecoeur · 04/02/2021 13:08

No advice on "labels" but the best advice Pigtailsandall is to get the best quality you can afford. Better quality will fit better, last longer and hold its shape better and make you look better too

Pigtailsandall · 04/02/2021 13:23

@Katiepoes thank you, very useful!

@MarieAnneLecoeur Yes, in principle I agree with this idea - its just very hard to gauge the quality when shopping online. And often spending more doesn't necessarily guarantee quality. I've paid £59 for a t-shirt before and honestly it's been no different to a £4 from Primark.
I'd happily pay £100 for the perfect top if I knew it would last me 10 years and keep its shape as it's a staple item I'll definitely wear again and again. Hence the original question of this thread!

@Pigtailsandall point very much taken. Even within brands these days there is a tremendous variation in quality. I have seen the same item for the same brand manufactured in places as far apart as Turkey, China and India.

Pigtailsandall · 04/02/2021 14:03

@MarieAnneLecoeur I do very much agree with you on buying the best quality you can afford - my grandmother used to say that the poor can't afford to buy cheap - but getting an idea of quality is so hard which is why I tend to favour companies which offer free returns - so much of it ends up going back when I see it!

I'm going to give Saint +Sofia a punt. They have a good basics range so I'm hoping it works out

OP posts:
MarieAnneLecoeur · 04/02/2021 14:09

@Pigtailsandall your dear grandmother was very wise 😃Quality is suffering these days - I call it qualflation - quality gets worse but prices stay the same or even rise. When you find quality it is worth buying two! Do let us know how you get on with Saint + Sofia x

DelphiniumBlue · 04/02/2021 16:59

Surprisingly, Primark.
I bought 2 cotton scoop neck short sleeved t shirts from there about 5 years ago, which are my favourites - they've washed very well, and soft and comfortable. Due to lockdown, they are now a bit skimpy so they are now my "under jumper" t shirts.
Then 2 years ago I bought 2 loose, deep v necked Primark T shirts, I think they are possibly not 100% cotton. They are also great, and have retained their shape very well.
My other faves are from Boden. But they are in my bad books because they've stopped making their swing t shirts.

Emp.co.uk and matalan

Pigtailsandall · 07/02/2021 15:40

Update for anyone interested - my long-sleeve t-shirt from Saint + Sofia arrived. Its thinner and more translucent material than I would have liked. Definitely need a black bra underneath and it's got a very slight sheen to it. However, stitching looks good and the v-neck is perfect- not too low bit low enough for a nice necklace. I'm keeping it as I wanted one for work and it seems a fraction dressier than a full-on cotton t-shirt, but if I'd been looking for one for leisure time I'd have preferred a heavier material
Also I'm between sizes and went up - definitely size up.
