Want to cut my hair but unsure

Non offence meant to anyone before I say what I say.

I have shoulder length auburn hair and when I'm 35. When I was ten years younger I had a pixie cut and I loved it. I was a size 12 back then.

Fast forward to now, I'm a size 18 (which I hate, it's too big for me and my body personally) and I want to cut my hair super short but I'm worried it won't look right now I'm a larger lady.

I asked my sisters opinion abs she just laughed at me said I would look like a fat butch lesbian (she's a more masculine gay herself not that it matters and I know it's pretty mean of her) but ever since she said that I can't get it out of my mind. I know hairdressers are in lockdown so I can't do anything any way but I have paid for an appointment which will happen when things open.

Am I being silly and just got for the chop? Or is my sister right and short hair on larger women look bad?

Thanks x

I've hummed & haa'd about a short cut for years. I'm bigger than you but have started losing weight since new year. I kind of feel the same but think I'm going to wait a couple of months after lockdown & go to a fancy place for a cut & see what they say. I stopped dying my hair a few years ago so no colouring to contend with & haven't spent much on hair in the last year or 2!

Have you tried one of those apps that try on hairdos for you? I think face shape is more important than body size for hair cuts

Life is short and hair grows back

Honestly, I would say that a short short pixie cut tends to look best on women with some angles in their faces.

That's not to say you couldn't pull it off but it depends on your face shape and where you carry your weight. If you have a rounded face then I would say perhaps a chin length cut would be more flattering.

But - who gives a f what anyone else thinks anyway? I would never even really notice let alone judge your haircut. So if it makes you happy then do it.

When I was slimmer I had a cracking jaw line and cheek bones but they are a bit rounded, maybe il do a Bob then work my way up as I try and loose weight

Thanks x

I love short hair. But it’s very unforgiving, there nothing to hide behind. It takes ages to grow out and can look bloody awful as it does so. For 10 years (aged around 20-30) I had a very short pixie cut, it was high maintenance (needed cutting every 4-6 weeks, potentially an issue with covid restrictions). And looking back, there were times I was too round in the face for it to look nice on me. It’s about face shape and balance with the rest of my look. It suits a face with angles I think, good cheek bones, defined jaw. I’ll never have good cheek bones. Though I don’t believe that those features are exclusive to thin people. I personally don’t think very short hair looks great on me when I’m bigger.

zymummy · 31/01/2021 02:14

I'll be honest and I say this as someone who has put on 3 stone and definitely needs to lose a lot of weight after this pregnancy (the 3 stone was before I got pregnant)

I don't think a pixie cut would look great on a "chubbier" face. I think the way your sister came out with it was not in great taste but ironically my god mother who is a very large lesbian as soon as she got a pixie cut she looked very butch and in her words she's very "femme"

But.. on the other hand. If that's what you want, then why not? Life is short.

I think it can also depend on your wardrobe.

If you're a long skirts and peasant blouse kind of woman, or a 1950's vintage lady, then short hair just doesn't 'go' with your 'look'. If you wear jeans and plaid shirts and you sport a crew cut, you will look a bit butch, and some people just can't carry it off. If you're a goth you can get away with it, same if you have a punk or skinhead type of vibe.

Otherwise, I reckon you can only get away with being both short haired and fat if you're black. (I hope that doesn't make me sound like a racist-- that's not my intention). If you're white, then you'll probably have to wear extra make-up or big earrings, or both. It's as if you have to make extra effort to signal to the world that you're female, otherwise you might be on the receiving end of hassle from other people. As regressive as that sounds...

If you're not a statement lip or chandelier earing kind of girl, then short hair could look a bit... 'butch', 'recovering from chemotherapy', 'non-binary snowflake', or 'Britney Spears post melt-down'.

If you're a not-so-confident person, or have social anxiety or such, you should be warned you will get stared at with short hair, especially if you've gone total skinhead, and you may receive catty remarks from other people, especially teenage girls, who are the cruellest mo-fo's around. Most adults will give you sympathetic looks or speak to you as if you've intellectually challenged...but it's the kids who are the worst.

If you're a hard-faced bint you can stand up for yourself, but... if you're not... well... maybe your sister is being honest.

sorry...

LizziesTwin · 01/02/2021 07:43

I’ve never had any comments made when I’ve had short hair about my looking like a lesbian. I’ve had long and super short hair. When it’s very short I’m reminded shocked how much I look like my brother, but that’s not surprising as we have the same parents.

Just go for it & do the full on crop now while life is more restricted. If you hate it you can wear hats as it’s winter and by the time it’s warmer it will have grown out.

Life is for living.

Wow! I don’t normally go on style and beauty threads, but this was in ‘active’ threads and I’ve been wondering about cutting my hair too. Are people normally this forthright in their opinions?

Leaving aside the racial stereotypes, insulting names and terms, mental health put-downs and accusations of stupidity, wtf is ‘ make extra effort to signal to the world that you're female’ supposed to mean?

WinterRose92 · 01/02/2021 08:30

I think that if you want to do it then go for it! If you hate it, it’ll grow back 🤷🏻‍♀️ Wear hats or headbands or something. Life is too short, just do it. This is why I never ask anyone else’s opinion before doing something with my hair, someone always tries to put you off!

TSBelliot · 01/02/2021 08:41

I have been a case study in this and whilst the several decades and stones between original and second style meant I looked different it still looked great.

Nobody gave a shit beyond the initial the hair is all gone comments as no one cares. I loved it.

buckeejit · 01/02/2021 09:51

@backinthebox that's not a normal comment & a bit much!

I'm not sure what sort of people @yaboo is hanging out with but I don't know anyone who would voice any of that or think it, apart from thinking maybe 'I liked it better longer'

BohemianDream · 03/02/2021 00:10

Go for it, I think short hair looks really cool on a bigger girl (I'm quite chunky so maybe biased).
It's better to appear how you want to, rather than how you think you should because of your size.
I've gradually went short and feel so much better, I was hiding behind long hair as if it was magically making me a beautiful, thin princess.

ZenNudist · 03/02/2021 00:16

Go for something chin length. I was so chuffed to get rid of my shoulder length style free hair.

If it's not right it will soon grow back and if you're feeling braver you can go shorter.

WagnerTheWehrWolf · 03/02/2021 00:19

Kate Moss has a perfectly proportioned face and she looked awful with a crop. So I say go for it and sate your curiosity.

TornadoOfSouls · 03/02/2021 08:06

What shape is your face? Because I have a defined jaw & cheekbones but my face is very square and I just don’t think it could take a short cut without looking somewhat butch. When I was younger & thinner I had short hair but even then a bad cut could leave me looking like something unfortunate from the Madchester era.

FWIW I think yaboo’a post contains a lot of sense. Your wardrobe and attitude play a big part in whether it will work for you.
