DS needs to tie back hair

mumwithchums · 29/01/2021 15:16

DS (10) hair has always been moderately long but recently has come down to his shoulders due to lockdowns (will attach photo tomorrow when account is able to) but due to his hair being so long the school has emailed about his hair having to be tied back when they return to school. He's never had to tie it back before and is mortified about the fact of having to put it in a ponytail even though he is sure he doesn't want it cut.Anyone else had the same issue and if so how did you tie it back?

A man bun would look good! I keep trying to persuade my 11 year old to grow his hair and have a man bun but he likes it super short

mumwithchums · 29/01/2021 16:30

@davidsSchitt

"DS is the only boy with long hair in his class so his teachers never had to enforce the rule on a boy until now..."

Presumably your DS isn't the first ever kid the school has encountered Confused they will have implemented this rule before.

It's very normal for both boys and girls to have to tie hair back.

DS teacher is new to teaching.

Does it matter that she's new to teaching?

You can buy long hair swim caps with extra room if you need it. Just tie it up high in a tight bun to get it in easily.

I meant it as if DS is the first boy with long hair she's had to ask to put up.In regards to the swim cap I'll need to really persuade DS to let me put his hair in a high bun (hope he lets me thoughSmile)

I doubt this brand new teacher has implemented the policy. You seem to be suggesting that she's picking on him or singling him out.

It's standard policy

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 29/01/2021 16:41

Doesn't the school have a dress code/uniform policy on their website?

Not the case at all I was just saying DS was the only boy in his year with long hair so he was the first boy to be asked to put his hair up in his year group as someone asked if he was the only one being asked.

Yes they do but beforehand DS hair was short enough to not have to put it up.

"I will be keeping an eye on that when DS returns to school!"

Why will you need to "keep an eye" on all the girls then? Particularly if the policy is published on the website?

AlbertCampion · 29/01/2021 16:46

We had this situation with DS8. We experimented with all sorts of styles, including a man bun and plenty of gel to keep it off his face, but ultimately he wasn't happy with any of them and ended up asking to have it all cut off. I felt really sad about it but couldn't fault the school - having your hair tied back is a rule for girls and boys alike and is for health and safety.

With swimming hats, when it was long we used a fabric swimming cap, which pulled far less on his hair than a rubber one. He found it much easier to manage.

Do you or he have Instagram? "Eh.mon" is a Youtuber (Eamon & Bec) he has fabulous long hair and so so suits the man bun. Their YouTube vids are family friendly too so if he saw one or two he may feel more comfortable wearing it up?

At the end of the day tho it's up or off for school so his call.

MagnusMama · 29/01/2021 16:52

DS started growing his hair at the start of Y5, it's now almost to his waist (he's 12).
First he had those grippy black elastic hairbands like footballers wear. Then a man bun. Then a low ponytail.
He loves home learning as he doesn't have to tie it up!
He was the first boy in his school to grow his hair, other than Sikh boys(who all wore topknots if they didn't cut their hair). The rules were changed because 19th century uniform rules seem daft in the 21st century. The hair rules apply equally now to boys and girls and are for safety reasons.

MagnusMama · 29/01/2021 16:53

And when he switched to secondary, he had to tell everyone pupil and staff alike that he was a boy. He's not remotely feminine looking! And has a v obviously boys' name...

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 29/01/2021 16:54

The hair bobbles that look like they are made of curly telephone wire are brilliant in ponytails/buns. They don't snag or put a kink in the hair.

WhereYouLeftIt · 29/01/2021 16:58

DS was very into Lord of the Rings, and wanted his hair long so he could look like Legolas. Show him pictures and see if he fancies it? (I never did the tiny braids over the ears.)

Look for big hair or thick hair swimming caps much easier.

If it’s that thick Superdrug do thick hair bands that are longer than normal ones when he helps

dannydyerismydad · 29/01/2021 17:00

DS hasn't had a haircut in a year now. It's not long enough to go in a ponytail without half of it slipping out again, so he wears a big elastic headband - much like David Beckham in his Real Madrid days.

My ds has a man bun, I showed him
Footballers with the same style and he was happy with that.

kowari · 29/01/2021 17:09

DS was a bit older, 12, now 14, when he needed to tie his back. I just bought a pack of black hair elastics and left him to it. He wore it in a high ponytail when it wasn't that long, then at the base of his neck. I'd have done the same if he was 10, I wouldn't be doing it for him at that age.

SoupDragon · 29/01/2021 17:10

Why would he be "mortified" about having to put it in a ponytail?

Couldn't tell you if I'm being honest I think he thinks he'll get called a girl by his classmates unfortunately.

Sorry no advice except to say thsy you're lucky your ds is allowed to espress his individuality at school. My ds went through a stage of wanting to grow his hair but it was so unbelievably sexist at his school. Girls are allowed to grow their hair as long as they like and wear it loose wheras boys aren't allowed it past collar length! Ds was actually called in with a group of about 6 other boys and told to cut his hair as it was now past collar length! Slightly better now in Year 10 but boys still aren't allowed to have actual long hair.

SeahorseoramI · 29/01/2021 17:38

At my dc primary school, any child with hair that is below the shoulders has to tie it back.

At my secondary all children are allowed hair down, except for practical lessons. Boys with longer hair do a mix of up and down. One used to just put half up, so it was mostly down but off his face.

Check out Pinterest for ideas.
