Longer waterproof coat

I’m looking for a longer line waterproof coat...maybe mid thigh length or longer with a waist. And that is actually waterproof - ideally at least 10000mm.

Trying to get prepared for spring. Hopefully I’m not asking too much!

I have the North Face Suzanne, which comes to just above my knees and is 100% waterproof, with a removable down liner that can be worn separately, and is very warm. I have worn both layers in the Artic Circle in the winter, and been warm enough, but it can also be worn all year round without the down inner. It's still going strong after 7 or 8 years.

It is neither cheap nor stylish though. I look like an undertaker in it, albeit a warm and dry one Wink

I've had my Seasalt coat since DD was a toddler. It's been washed & re-proofed a couple of times, but it's still in fantastic condition, definitely worth the price. Very convenient to be able to wash it at home. It's long on me (I'm 5'3"). It has literally never leaked, I have worn it in some absolutely vile weather, blizzards, rain pouring off me. I used to walk 3k to work. Always dry underneath. I do want a new coat, but only because I'm cold a lot & need something warmer (we've moved higher up so it's colder, & very windy & exposed up here). DD will probably get a few years out of it when I replace it, she's naturally a lot warmer than me.

@goldpendant

I have a protected species having followed tips on here. They are completely waterproof but not warm at all, I guess like any waterproof layer but you'll want to size up if you need to wear thick layers under.

I kind of wish I'd gone for an oversized Rains parka instead, I think that they look a bit cooler (perhaps I chose the wrong style of protected species - I got the commuter I think, it's kind of cocoon shaped, in the khaki green). Maybe should have gone for black.

I recently bought the winter Parker and find it warm enough with a thermal base layer and wool jumper on snowy days. I didn’t size up.

I can imagine the other styles wouldn’t be warm enough.

Thanks for all your recommendations.

Seasalt seems popular too. What’s the sizing like?

Has anyone got a seasalt that’s just a shell not a warm one?

Seasalt sizing varies a bit, annoyingly. It never comes up small, but ranges from "standard/slightly generous" to "ridiculously huge". I have one Seasalt coat from eBay, so an older style, in my normal size (for coats) that is fine, but my Janelle is a size down and still a generous fit. I NEVER wear that size for coats normally.

Check the waterproofing before you buy, if you want something very waterproof. They do vary a bit between styles.

The reviews are quite helpful for determining sizing, and their customer service is excellent.

One of the best extra-long waterproof duster raincoat I have seen from L.L.Bean

I think I’ll need a 6 if the sizes are on the generous side and they only have the warmer ones in a 6. Will have to keep looking.

Anyone have a Helly Hansen Kirkwall? It looks good apart from it only has poppers, no zip...just wondering if that’s annoying

My Janelle is a 12. I'm 5'7" and sit on the border of size 10/12. I find the coat generous but I like a bit of room for a big jumper under it. I don't think they're that warm but I live in a v cold, wet area.

Murinae · 30/01/2021 13:52

I have the seasalt coverack which isn’t as think as the Janelle but it’s also not as long. The Janelle isn’t very thick and heavyweight though. You can send stuff back for free from seasalt so you can get them and try them on.

I have the protected species parka in navy. I can easily wear a hoodie or warm jumper under it in my regular size so no need to size up :)

I love mine!
